Lynk’s new website makes it easy to book reliable household services online.

0

Lynk has revamped its website to make it easy for blue-collar professionals to easily find reliable and quality jobs online and connect with households and businesses in Nairobi needing their services.

According to the firm, the brand new website makes it easy for Lynk customers to search for a service or a provider, see the price upfront and know exactly what to expect while getting a service, product or professional from Lynk.

The new website also has a great user experience which makes it easy for customers to find what they are looking for and even easier for them to book a product or service of their choice.

“In our bid to fulfill our mission and provide affordable prices, excellent quality of Professionals and top-notch customer experience, we have been undergoing various changes. We wanted to streamline our service delivery and improve the user experience on our website,” Mrinalini Agnihotri, Marketing lead at Lynk said.

“All services are now commoditized,” said Agnihotri. “We started commoditizing services since November 2018, starting with Manicures and Pedicures. We’ve come a long way since then. Now all our services are standardized.”

Services on the platform now have upfront pricing, Standard delivery, Quick booking, and on-time delivery and of 100% quality guarantee. Lynk has also beautifully designed segment pages for ease of access and navigation.

The five major segments include Installation and Repair, Beauty and wellness, Cleaning and Care, Furniture and Decor and Lynk Projects. Each segment has a dedicated home on the website for simplicity and ease of access.

Lynk is banking on the all-new website and user experience to attract new customers and retain its old customers as things are super easy to find. The furniture segment, which was among the first to be revamped has been one of the most moving segments with over 100 new furniture items. (All made by local Kenyan artisans- at its workshop where it trains and supports professionals.)

“Our ability to grow market size in Nairobi is the remaining proof point before expanding to the second market. We have budgeted a good amount for marketing activities,” said Agnihotri.

“Our mission is to create fulfilling careers for fundis and artisans by connecting them with consistent work opportunities and ensuring positive outcomes,” she added.

Lynk offers different products and services for a range of customer needs that include Installation, Repair & Maintenance, Cleaning & Home Care, Beauty, and Furniture & Decor both for households and businesses. So far, we have 1,300 active workers in the platform and delivered over 40,000 jobs.

The firm has also aunched concierge services dubbed Lynk Project to the public as it eyes local expansion.

Lynk Projects, a business-to-business service handles big construction and fit-out projects for businesses in Nairobi with plans to expand across the country. Some of Lynk Projects’ pioneer clients include Baobox, Mama Rocks, Workstyle, Andela among others.

The e-commerce platform linking households and businesses in Nairobi to reliable and quality assured blue-collar professionals in installation, repair & maintenance, cleaning & home care, beauty, and furniture & decor both for households and businesses.

So far, Lynk has 1,300 active workers on the platform and has delivered over 40,000 jobs.

Lynk is not the first marketplace in Kenya to launch concierge services. ROAM’s BuyRentKenya at one time launched concierge services. According to BuyRentKenya, Concierge services were aimed at simplifying property search, inspection, and purchase. Jamie Pujara, the then CEO of BuyRentKenya told TechMoran. “The idea is to provide a level of convenience. Our mission was to make property search easier and while we have done this to a certain degree, we feel there is still so much we haven’t accomplished.”

By removing the back-and-forth processes involved, concierge services are targeted at bringing convenience to customers minus the back-and-forth processes involved. A concierge service takes over mundane activities for the customer and only delivers results.

It’s like hiring Lynk as the contractor to do all the tasks involved in the process then pay Lynk which then pays its white-collar subcontractors. For Lynk, this is more revenues than the commission it would earn from matching fundis to gigs.

OLX tried a similar initiative with Sell it for Me but its overheads were unbearable and it had to call it a day.

Create a Social Media Listening Strategy With Help From NetBase

0

There has been a lot of talk about social media listening over the past several years, but what exactly is it? Social media listening isn’t literally listening to anything. It’s much deeper than that. It’s using a system for monitoring the information that exists about a brand online. If you’re a business owner, you probably want to know what others think about your products and services.

What’s amazing about social media listening is that you can obtain comprehensive information that can provide the guidance you need to take your brand to the next level. Depending on the tools you choose to use, social listening can provide a deep dive into how consumers feel about your brand. This is important for many reasons. Chief among them is being able to market your brand with a greater level of effectiveness.

Finding Out What Matters

One of the benefits of social media listening is being able to find out directly from either your existing customers or your potential customers what matters to them. You won’t have to make assumptions or hold focus groups. Instead, you can find out what they are actually talking about. This includes what they like about your products and services and what they hate about them. If you listen closely, you can also find out what matters to consumers, which is the kind of information that can drastically boost sales when acted upon.

The ultimate goal of social media listening is using the information that you have obtained to meet the needs of your target demographics. This will in turn result in more traffic to your website and greater profitability. There are many other benefits, such as finding out about your competition and being able to boost engagement on various social media platforms.

Creating a Social Media Listening Strategy

To create a social listening strategy, you will first need to have your social media accounts established. As you may well know, this will likely include Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but there are other possibilities. Which socials you choose will depend on your target audience. Once you have your socials established and post regularly, it will be time to establish a strategy. This requires you to understand what you hope to achieve. In other words, why do you want to know what consumers have to say about your brand? How do you plan to use the information? This will require you to detail what you hope to achieve for clarity.

The most common reasons why brands opt for a social listening strategy is because they want to use it for the development of a marketing campaign. They want to decide where to post on social media, how often to post on social media, when to post on social media, and what other types of marketing channels should be used. Answering these questions alone can provide you with a wealth of information.

Identifying Your Desired Outcomes

To determine the details of your strategy, it’s important to clarify your desired outcomes. For instance, one of your goals should be to determine where to find information online that’s important to your brand. You may also want to know which socials attract your target audience most often. These details can help with your overall marketing endeavors. For assistance with social media listening, top brands choose NetBase, a recognized leader in the industry. They can provide exactly what you need for social listening. NetBase provides information that can help you achieve your short and long-term business goals by providing data that is accurate and actionable.

Will The New Instagram Require Influencers To Have An Organic Audience?

0

Will the new Instagram require influencers to have an organic audience?

In case you’re not aware the new Instagram is very different from the old one. How does Instagram work for influencers? For starters, it’s all about the likes and engagement you get but now the new Instagram has removed likes, or rather you as the audience can no longer see the likes but the owner of the platform can see how many likes he/she has. So from your end all you can see is “other’s likes” but not the number of likes. They did this as an attempt to reduce the obsession with likes as a way of focusing on the quality of content instead. How would this affect an influencer though?

The influencer marketing industry has become over-saturated and is filled with enough fake profile celebrities who actually lack quality content. People are obsessed with the number of followers people have, some influencers even buy followers for the sake of marketing. This obsession with likes and followers has led to lack of trust between consumers and brand promoters which in this case are the influencers, people no longer trust what influencers say online when it comes to their opinions of brands. Since trust is essential to establishing credibility, which is foundational to cultivating influence, you can see why there is cause for alarm.

Are influencers that influential?

Apparently, while influencers actually promote brands online they are actually far from the most influential people online. Studies have also reported that the more followers you have the lower the average number of engagement rates tend to be. What this means for this industry is that it will favour micro-influencers who actually have an organic audience basically an audience that has not been bought and are loyal.

Who are organic influencers?

These are people who don’t do everything for money, they actually like the brands they promote and they genuinely create content about the things they actually like. They may have 5,000 Instagram followers, or they may have 50, but the size of their social followings aren’t as important as their passion, authenticity and collective influence. You see organic influencers are not paid for their content, they mostly do what they do because they love it. Brands however, push influencers into a tight spot, the fact that content has been so commercialized most influencers throw away their authenticity to obviously make money.

For example, you could ask your organic influencers to post some winter-themed images in advance of a holiday campaign you may be preparing to launch. Want them to feature a specific product or take a selfie vs a scenic shot? Just ask, and provide examples of the types of images you want.  We should promote more work from organic influencers than simply commercial ones, why? Because they post content that they care about, if Instagram took away the ability to promote certain content then we would be able to control the number of influencers we currently have because most would end up getting out of the game anyways.

TikTok has 1.5 billion downloads according to Sensor Tower

0

Chinese short-form video creation app TikTok has taken the Indian internet by storm in the last 12 months. The country accounts for nearly half of TikTok downloads in 2019.

TikTok is a popular video-based social media platform developed by Bytedance who are Chinese developers. The app is one of the most popular social media platforms throughout the globe which enables its users to create short comedy, lip-sync, and talent videos.

According to the latest reports, a Mobile intelligence firm, Sensor Tower, revealed that the social media app, TikTok, has passed more than 1.5 billion downloads across the iOS App Store and Google Play Store worldwide. This year alone, the app has been downloaded 614 million times, which is 6% more than it had the same time last year, according to the survey.

The app passed the 1 billion threshold in February

In terms of its status in the rankings, Sensor Tower estimates that the social video app is currently the third most downloaded non-gaming app of the year, which is pretty remarkable when we look at the surrounding apps. WhatsApp is at No. 1 and Messenger at No. 2, according to the firm. While Facebook and Instagram rank in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Essentially, TikTok is the only app in the top five that isn’t owned by Facebook. And what Sensor Tower’s survey seems to be hinting at is that Facebook’s seemingly impenetrable grip on the social media landscape is finally starting to somewhat weaken.

What’s even more striking is that TikTok was launched just three years ago in 2016. Since then, TikTok has many tools that have helped to grow it’s platform to what it has become.

Looking at where Tik Tok’s user numbers are coming from, worldwide, India and China hold the top spots. India leads the pack with a bit over 466 million downloads of TikTok on the App Store and Google Play, the report says. Whereas China ranks second for most downloads, at over 173 million, though according to Sensor Tower, that number doesn’t include installs from third-party Android stores considering a huge number of people rely on these stores within the country. The US sits in third place at just over 123 million downloads.

Looking at just this year alone, users in India generated 277.6 million downloads which represent 45% of the global installs. When it has been downloaded 45.5 million times in China which represents 7.4% of the global installs.

Tik Tok global downloads by quarter

Interestingly, TikTok’s revenues are also on the rise. During its entire existence, it’s estimated that the app has earned $175 million worldwide via the App Store and Google Play Store.

In 2019, lifetime user spend on the app has hit $175 million worldwide across the App Store and Google Play Store. This is largely driven by Chinese users, who have spent $84.5 million on TikTok, 48.3% of all revenue. The US ranked second accounting for $62.4 million (35.7%) of TikTok’s revenues, while the UK stood at No. 3 with $6.9 million (3.9%).

And believe it or not, a massive $115.3 million of the $175 million was earned this year alone.

Facebook has made calculated efforts to mimic TikTok’s success.

In 2016, Zuckerberg spent six months trying to acquire Musical.ly, a startup based out of Shanghai and headquartered in Santa Monica, California; the app which would become TikTok. However, in November 2017, Bytedance, TikTok’s parent company spent $ 1 billion and acquired Musical.ly.

Come August 2, 2018, TikTok officially replaced Musical.ly, and since then the app has received immense competition with other apps offering similar features like Helo and Likee (Formerly Like).

After failing to acquire Tik Tok, in November 2018 Facebook launched a standalone video-sharing app called Lasso and leaked audio from an internal meeting showed that CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s strategy was to introduce Lasso in markets where TikTok did not yet have a niche, such as Mexico.

Google Photos update brings new timeline editor for movies in its web interface

0

Google has added a new feature to the Google Photos web interface, a new timeline editor for movies. Various of Google’s recent products place their focus on mobile, but the same cannot be said for its features on desktop.

Android Police noted that while the Chrome browser maker has introduced a slew of enhancements to the Google Photos app on Android and iOS, it has left the Photos web interface without something like an editor that can be used for many things.

Google, however, realized that and added some editing capabilities to the Photos web client to enable it to do some of the things the mobile app does. Google Photos’ new web interface now allows users to make simple edits to videos they create using the photos they upload to the photo storage and sharing service.

Android Police also noted that the editor is still lacking some features that other editors offer. Users won’t be able to overlay some text on their videos or even add filters to their videos, no matter how short or long these videos are. It’s not hard to imagine why the editor has these limitations, though the mobile app has them too.

However, the editor allows users to do some things with their videos like adding clips, pictures and live photos to the videos. Users can also trim and reposition these elements in the video’s timeline, or even change the music used in a video.

As much as the new editor on the Google Photos web client won’t be enough to replace other video editing software, not even the basic ones, it will still give users an easy way to make simple edits on the videos they share with others on the internet. Although it may only prove useful to those who don’t have other video editors on their computers or those who only need minor edits.

Another thing is that the new feature comes alongside other changes to the Google Photos app. These changes include a redesign of the “info” menu, the addition of album sorting, the renaming of the “Assistant” tab into the “For You” tab, and the transfer of some functions into the new “Manage your library” feed. Though it is overall a minor addition, it’s nice to see Google bringing more features across platforms

3 Reasons Your Business Plan Isn’t Just Paperwork

0

When your mind is bursting with new ideas and strategies for your business, it can be hard to organize your ideas and keep one train of thought moving cohesively with another. If you are intent on making your business succeed, you have probably read several books or listened to podcasts from noted entrepreneurs to gain bits of wisdom or insight. You might have come across the need to develop and draft a business plan prior to your start-up processes. Many potential business owners overlook this critical step because of the work and strategy that in entails. However, a business plan is one of the most critical steps of getting your business organized and ready for operations.

Formal vs Informal Business Plans

The reality of business plans is that they can be long and tedious to devise. Formal plans require a tremendous amount of data and depend on projections that have been made concerning your industry and market. The research needs of a formal business plan can be overwhelming for a novice business owner, and it can be harder still to identify what information is useful. When it comes to current theories on the need for a formal business plan, a general consensus is that the businesses which will not be seeking external funding are not in great need of a formal presentation. That is to say, the overall success of the business is not directly impacted by drafting a formal strategy and document. There are many who feel that the time and investment it takes to write a formal plan takes energy and resources from other areas of opportunities. However, it isn’t advised to forge ahead without some sort of strategy on paper. However, being able to write a formal plan for your ideas helps encourage your actions and decision-making to be focused and strategic to the long-term goals of your business. An informal plan relies less on the wording and structure and deals more with the content of the plan. This is a plan that is generally only used for start-up individuals.

Take the Time to Do It Right

Whether or not you feel comfortable writing a formal plan or your idea is to sketch an informal one, there are several reasons why having a business plan is beneficial to your business. This is one of the best tools you can have in your start-up arsenal.

1. It Helps With Financing

Many entrepreneurs don’t have the funding they need to get their business off the ground or to sustain it long-term. Fortunately, there are ways to bring in capital, but the requirements or eligibility criteria can be tough. You have the option of turning to a traditional lender for a small business loan, seeking investment funds from a venture capitalist like Mark Stevens or looking for a business partner. Each of these options will require that you present a detailed business plan. Before anyone will put money into your business, they will want to see the true nature of your business potential laid out in hard data. The business plan is a respected way to present this information.

2. It Helps With Decision-Making

There are things in your business plan that will help you navigate some of the hard decisions that you face in your business journey. Instead of worrying about the gray areas of investment or spending, a business plan presents the black and white goals that you are trying to attain. Deciding on a price point for your products or services is made less difficult when your products and services section of the business plan has been well-written and related to the needs of the market. The business planning process helps establish these boundaries long before you need to make the decision to alter a price or move in a new direction.

3. It is a Reality Check

As mentioned, a business plan can be a time-consuming process, and it will test the resolve and thought processes of a potential business owner. Throughout the drafting period, it becomes more difficult to give words to your ideas that seemed to flow so smoothly in your hear. Your ability to think through each and every detail of operations and management is brought under scrutiny. It can reveal that your idea might not be fully developed and needs additional work. This can be terrifying and overwhelming, but being able to identify these gaps quite early on in the development can save a lot of heartaches later. While it might seem like a step back since it could expose many weaknesses, it can serve to develop your confidence and improve your chances of success before you move in the wrong direction and fail.

It might seem counterintuitive to spend all your time and energy working on something that is just a piece of paper, but this is the most important piece of paper you will have in your new business arsenal. If you want your business to stay on track and be successful, take the time to do it right with a firm business plan.

BRCK launches Moja, it’s free public Wi-Fi in South Africa

0

BRCK, a Nairobi-based hardware startup has launched Moja, it’s free public Wi-Fi in South Africa in an expansion move aimed at making it Africa’s largest public Wi-Fi provider.

BRCK COO Nivi Sharma, in an interview with TechMoran, said, ” South Africa is one of the most developed economies in Africa, so commercializing our network there was an easy decision. Other key success indicators for market entry that we consider for expansion include user demand, the structure of public transit system, availability of partners, and the ability to deploy services.”

Sharma told TechMoran further that it will be working with partners in the country but it’ll launch on its own. Currently, BRCK’s Moja has 2,700 WiFi hotspots in Kenya and Rwanda serving 7m sessions per month with close to 700k monthly active unique users on the platform.

Founded in Nairobi in 2013, BRCK started as rugged internet router for Kenya’s marginalized areas. The firm added an education arm dubbed BRCK Education with its Kio Kits. Later it launched its new version dubbed SupaBRCK targeted at rural areas. Moja Free Wifi runs on the SupaBRCK which is a newer version of the initial BRCK.

BRCK recently acquired Surf, its competitor in Kenya for market consolidation and also signed up a number of partners including SWVL to bring as many people as possible online. At the moment, the firm wants to grow its user numbers in Kenya as well as grow in South Africa before it makes another major expansion.

“We are focused on South Africa and growth in Kenya for now,” Sharma told TechMoran. “BRCK exists to get people online. We fundamentally believe that everyone should have the ability to take advantage of the global digital economy, and our job is to level the playing field for those who can’t pay for it.”

BRCK says it’s working towards making the internet accessible to everyone and providing the tools to take advantage of the digital economy. It’s platform Moja free public WiFi network gives anyone within range of the signal the ability to connect to the internet for free and access Moja’s stored content to watch shows, listen to music or read books.

“With Moja, users pay to get online with their time, attention or engagement rather than with money,” she said. “The Moja platform offers a way for organizations to capitalise on the benefits of the digital economy, reaching previously untapped audiences and measuring exactly how many people your message is reaching. Whether it’s a survey, an interactive ad, a video or a piece of micro-work, organizations can connect with potential customers.

For those asking why they should buy BRCK routers and not consumer routers in the market already, Nivi says they have that option because the Moja platform runs on several routers, in fact its fixed locations do not use SupaBRCK routers at all, but for the matatu industry, she says nothing has worked quite as well as the SupaBRCK.

“BRCK as a company makes its own hardware (the SupaBRCK), which serves our customers well for the places we have deployed it. If you want a home router, sure -there are cheaper solutions.”

According to her, about 20% of Moja’s downtime is due to power-related issues or vandalized cables on Matatus) so a battery is crucial for that unit to stay online while a field team track that matatu down and fix the cut cable before the device goes offline.

“We’re already inking deals with some great FMCG suppliers, banks, and insurance companies.”

Moja in South Africa will be onboarding content creators to help them monetize their content.

How to improve your credit score before you apply for a mortgage

0

Applying for a mortgage is an unpleasant experience as it is. You don’t have to complicate the process further by applying with a bad credit score, as you’re likely to end up bearing heavy interest and stringent default penalties. This article will explain what a credit score is and how you can improve it before you apply for a mortgage.

WHAT IS A CREDIT SCORE?
In the simplest of terms, credit scores are an indication of a person’s creditworthiness. The better the score you have, the more creditworthy you are and lenders will be willing to extend you a loan. There is no unified scoring system and chances are you have dozens of credit scores. However, this isn’t something to worry about as there isn’t a universal algorithm that all companies use.

However, what is universal are all the factors that these companies take into account when calculating the score. Credit scores compute payment history on loans and cards, regular use of revolving credit, the duration the credit accounts have been open, the types of accounts you own and operate, and the frequency with which you apply for new credit.

Before you can improve your score, you first need to check what it is. You can contact your credit bureau for a credit report or check your credit score online. With these reports, you’ll also get details on the factors taken into account and how they’ve contributed to, or taken from, your credit score.

BE PUNCTUAL WITH PAYMENTS

Lenders look at your past payment schedule, and your compliance to it, when they’re reviewing your application for a loan. This factor also has an impact on your credit score. Paying bills on time is an indicator of your reliability as a borrower and is viewed positively when predicting the reliability of your future performance. So make sure you’re paying your bills on time.

BE SMART WITH YOUR CREDIT ACCOUNTS

You should only apply for a credit account if you really need it. Having more credit accounts doesn’t lead to a good “credit mix”, which isn’t even really a thing. The more open accounts you have, the worse it is on your credit score. Such activity is not viewed favorably and should be avoided.

However, if you’ve wavered in your commitment and already opened an account and haven’t used the card, then just keep it open and don’t use the card.

GET A DEBT CONSOLIDATION LOAN

This might be a bit extreme, but it is an effective way of improving your credit score. Owing money to multiple people isn’t viewed in the best light when it comes to credit scores. A debt consolidation loan is where you get a loan to pay off all your existing debt. The interest rates are usually high and having a bad credit score before you apply for one could result in a rejected application. However, there are several lenders, like Everyday Loans, or if age 62+ check Reverse Mortgage Reviews which do consider applications even if your credit score isn’t the best, which do consider applications even if your credit score isn’t the best.

This also helps you manage your debt since you’ll only have one payment to worry about instead of having to manage payments to ten different lenders.

Apple to host surprise event for apps and games on December 2

0

Surprisingly, Apple has one more event in store before the year ends, and this time it’s for apps. Members of the press received surprise invitations from Apple this morning to attend a first-of-its-kind event to honour 2019’s top apps and games on December 2 in New York City.

Normally, Apple gives out awards for the best apps of the year, but this is the first time the company will be hosting a ceremony to hand them out, sounds more like the Oscars of apps! The event also falls one day before Apple announced its best apps of the year in 2018.

From what we gather, no new product announcements are expected to be made there, especially given it appears to be a low-key app event. Though some Apple fans were hoping the company would have a keynote in October. Alternatively, the company launched the new AirPods Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro without throwing a big press event.

However, Apple recently delayed the launch of the long-awaited Mac Pro redesign until December. Meaning it’s likely that we might see that machine and the Pro Display XDR at the event; it’s been teasing long enough. Although the only other new product expected to roll out before the end of 2019 might be the long-rumoured Apple AirTags.

This year seems to have marked a lot of firsts for Apple when it comes to software and apps. Apart from Apple Arcade, it also launched its first entertainment service called Apple TV+ and a digital news subscription offering called Apple News+.

With that in mind, it seems plausible that Apple could take this event as an opportunity to prove that it’s just as committed to its software platforms as it is hardware by keeping the spotlight squarely on app developers.

The app and game show might also be a chance for Cupertino to showcase some of the best games on Apple Arcade, the company’s recently launched subscription gaming service.

Apple Inc’s NYC app event will start at 4 p.m. EST on Monday, December 2. We’re not sure if Apple will provide a live stream of it yet as there’s no mention of it on the company’s event website.

PalmPay, a Transsion arm wants to crack the Nigeria payment market with a $40m wallet

0

PalmPay, a Transsion Holdings firm behind and sister brand to popular mid-range smartphones TECNO, Infinix and iTel has raised $40 million for its payments arm PalmPay to launch its payment services in Nigeria and Ghana.

“PalmPay will use the capital to grow its digital financial services business in Nigeria and Ghana and to support upcoming launches in several other African countries,” Greg Reeve, Global PalmPay CEO said.

China’s NetEase and Mediatek, also participated in the round in a deal that will see PalmPay pre-installed on Transsion’s TECNO, Infinix, and Itel 20 million phones across Africa for airtime purchase, bank transfers, bill payment services, rewards among others.

PalmPay users can top up funds electronically, make and accept individual and merchant payments, purchase digital services and do peer-to-peer transfers.

PalmPay is banking on free deposits and 10% cashback and discounts to sign up as many users as possible in Nigeria and Ghana. The app will be pre-installed on approximately 20m smartphones across Africa in 2020.

According to Stephen Ha, General Manager of TECNO Mobile. “We see a huge growth opportunity in mobile payments and financial services on the continent and are looking forward to working together with the PalmPay team to help shape the future of payments in Africa.”

PalmPay is also working with over 100,000 merchants belonging to Visa to roll out virtual Visa cards for users for both offline and online use. The payment’s firm might be late to the party though as it’s not the payments platform eyeing African consumers. Opera’s OPay, a provider of payment, ride-hailing, food delivery and loan services was recently given approval by Nigeria’s Apex Bank Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to commence international money transfer in Nigeria.

With the approval, OPay will start facilitating remittance B2B, B2P and P2P remittance services into Nigeria.

Apple just banned every vaping-related App from the App Store

0

Apple has pulled down 181 vaping-related apps from the App Store worldwide.

On Friday, Apple said that it’s banning vaping-related apps from its App Store due to concerns that the use of e-cigarettes can damage the lungs or even kill people.

“Recently, experts ranging from the CDC to the American Heart Association have attributed a variety of lung injuries and fatalities to e-cigarette and vaping products, going so far as to call the spread of these devices a public health crisis an a youth epidemic,” Apple said in response to an AFP query prompted by an Axios report.

“We agree, and we’ve updated our App Store Review Guidelines to reflect that apps encouraging or facilitating the use of these products are not permitted.”

As a result, 181 vaping-related apps have been pulled by Apple from the App Store worldwide. Tobacco along with vaping cartridges was never allowed at the virtual shop, so the apps involved social networks, news, games, hardware or stores, according to the California-based company.

In a released statement, American Heart Association chief executive Nancy Brown said;

“We are grateful that Apple is joining with us and others on this historic day to stand against big Vape and their lies by removing all vaping apps in the App Store.

Our hope is that others will follow our lead and follow with their own powerful message that nicotine and nicotine addiction caused by e-cigarette use are leaving thousands sick and dying across the globe.”

Apple vets what is allowed on the shelves of its virtual shop that serves as the sole outlet for apps available to its popular mobile devices, including some 900 million iPhones in use around the world.

The company’s new App Store review guideline now prohibits;

  • apps encouraging “consumption of tobacco and vape products, illegal drugs, or excessive amounts of alcohol,”
  • apps that encourage the use of those substances by minors, and
  • any apps that facilitate “the sale of marijuana, tobacco, or controlled substances (except for licensed pharmacies).”

Apple said that it has not approved any new vaping apps for inclusion in the App Store since June after it added vape products to a list of things that are barred from being promoted through the service. The company also revealed that it has never allowed vape cartridges to be sold through the App Store, the apps available for download included things like store apps, games, news, social media, and apps that allow a user to control settings on their vaping devices. You can’t sell a dab pen in the store either.

Numerous prominent vape companies have apps that were previously available in the Apple App Store. Cannabis vape-maker, Pax, for example, has an app for controlling vapor and flavor output, temperature, locking the device, and firmware updates. That app has now been scrubbed from the service.

In a statement, a Pax spokesperson said that the company is very concerned and disappointed that Apple has made the decision to remove their app from its store, adding that its app allowed millions of users in the 34 states where cannabis is, to one degree or another, legal, “to ensure dose control and correct temperature of their tested, legally purchased cannabis.”

E-cigarettes have faced questions about their safety ever since their inception. Manufacturers have portrayed them as a safer alternative to cigarettes, but critics, including the Food and Drug Administration, say companies, haven’t proven these claims scientifically. The technology is so new that the long-term health impacts aren’t yet clear.

Analysts are especially worried about rising teen vaping, while conventional teen smoking has been on the decline for decades. Those gains have been largely offset by a rise in e-cigarette use among high school students. The Food and Drug Administration is planning to ban flavored vaping products to reduce their appeal to children.

In recent months, health officials have confronted a more urgent problem whereby hundreds of people have fallen ill after using vaping devices.

However, Federal regulators have found that the vast majority of vaping-related illness and death are linked to black market THC vapes (the main active ingredient in marijuana) but not e-cigarettes. One potential culprit: a form of vitamin E, common in skin creams, that may become harmful to the lungs if vaporized. This form of vitamin E has been found in some vaping liquids.

Although, these acute health problems seem to afflict a small minority of vaping users who use vaping liquids from unofficial sources. Consumers who stick to mainstream vaping products do not seem to be affected.

Pax argues that its app help users avoid dangerous products, not the other way around.

“Additionally, in the wake of the vaping illnesses, our app provides consumers detailed information about what is contained in their product, including results of state-regulated testing and compliance, terpene and cannabinoid profiles, and other information that enables the educated, informed and safe consumption of legal cannabis.”

Pax spokesman

Nevertheless, people who already have the now-banned apps on their Apple gadgets will still be able to continue using them and to transfer them to new devices. But new users won’t be able to download these apps, and new vaping apps can’t be published on Apple’s store.

Additionally, US President Donald Trump said that he plans to meet with vaping industry representatives as he considers whether to ban flavoured e-cigarette products following a deadly epidemic of vaping-linked lung injuries.

Considering that it is already criticized as a “gateway” to tobacco or other addiction, vaping is facing unprecedented scrutiny amid a mysterious epidemic linked to e-cigarette use that has killed 39 and sickened more than 2,000 mostly young people in the US.

Huawei Y9s Camera: Explore the Enjoyment of Photography in Everyday Life

Demonstrating Huawei’s expertise in producing quality smartphones for younger consumers, the new HUAWEI Y9s maintains smooth performance and long battery life while continuing Huawei’s advantages in photography. It improves camera performance through hardware and software integration, giving users new ways to capture wonderful moments in their everyday life.

The HUAWEI Y9s is equipped with an AI Triple Camera setup, which comprises an ultra-clear 48MP Main Camera, an 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera and a 2MP Depth Camera. The 48MP Main Camera features a 6 Plastic (6P) lens with a large aperture of f/1.8, which effectively increases the quality and clarity of images. Users can take great photos with sharp details without the need for touch-ups.

Additionally, the 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera offers a 120-degree field-of-view for photo and video shooting, almost doubling the viewing angle of 78-degree that traditional lenses can offer. Whether shooting natural scenery, urban architecture or a group photo, a wider field of view gives you more opportunities to record your story. The 2MP Depth Camera helps with background blurring to create professional bokeh effects, making portraits more vibrant.

In addition to its powerful hardware, the HUAWEI Y9s also uses AI algorithms to enhance images. The built-in Multi-Frame Noise Reduction powered by Huawei’s AI algorithms allows long exposures of up to six seconds during handheld photography, helping users shoot improved night photography without fear of, red-eye, blurring or noise caused by long-exposure. Moreover, with AI Scene Recognition, the HUAWEI Y9s can quickly identify 500+ scenes such as ancient architecture, food or sunrises and sunsets. It can then optimise the portrait and background of the photo for different scenarios.

The rear Triple Camera allows users to capture clear photos, while the front pop-up camera is designed to snap beautiful selfies. The HUAWEI Y9s comes with a 16MP front camera paired with remarkable AI algorithms to enrich portraits with flare effects, AI Backlit Imaging and new AI Beauty for the ideal selfie.

Huawei Y9s Design and Features: Quality Build 6.59-inch Ultra FullView Display with Stylish Colour Design

Instead of a notched or punch hole design, the HUAWEI Y9s uses a pop-up camera to provide a clean, true FullView Display experience. A Micro-Seam Earpiece is embedded in the top bezel, while a hidden ambient light sensor is installed at the bottom of the display. Compared with the previous product (HUAWEI Y9 2019), the HUAWEI Y9s features thinner top and bottom bezels to get a high screen-to-body ratio of 91% and maximise the viewing area.

The HUAWEI Y9s sports a 6.59-inch negative LCD FullView Display that offers a palette of 16.7 million colours. With a screen resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, 1500:1 contrast ratio as well as a wide colour gamut of 85% (typical value), the FullView Display brings out the sharp, fine details and make colours vibrant. The device also provides professional Eye Comfort Mode, which passed TÜV Rheinland’s low blue light certification, helping to alleviate eye fatigue over time.

Additionally, the HUAWEI Y9s adopts a side-fingerprint solution, which combines the power button and fingerprint unlock button so users have one button for multiple purposes. This design ensures the integrity of the front and back panels, while providing unlock speeds are lightning fast. Made of glass and polished with a nano-texture process (Breathing Crystal only), the back panel of the HUAWEI Y9s interprets the dynamic changes of lights and shadows.

Huawei Y9s Performance and Battery: High Performance, Large Storage and Big Battery

The HUAWEI Y9s is powered by the Kirin 710F chip, a high performance, low power consumption processor which ensures a fast and smooth user experience, effectively improving the battery life. Compared with the Kirin 659, Kirin 710F provides roughly 75% better single-core performance and around 68% improved multi-core performance in CPU. For GPU, it also doubles the power efficiency and delivers 1.3 times higher performance.

Additionally, the HUAWEI Y9s supports UFS2.1 Dual-channel Storage technology and Huawei’s Extendable Read-Only File System (EROFS) to bring better read and write performance and more efficient storage, releasing more space for the phone to run heavy-duty applications.

RedViolet Company CEO on E-Commerce in Nigeria: The Good, The Bad & The Way Forward

As the founder and CEO of e-commerce firm RedViolet Company in Nigeria, I can testify how the internet has propelled digital innovation to a whole new level, and one of the resultant business models is e-commerce.

Though RedViolet Company cannot be compared to giants such as Amazon and AliExpress, e-commerce penetration happened rapidly in the West, Europe, and Asia. The same isn’t true for Africa yet. Let’s focus on Nigeria, There are many challenges facing e-commerce, but there are benefits too.

The benefits of E-commerce has made shopping easy for many Nigerians, the access to shops 24/7 from anywhere, the convenience of buying stuff not sold in your city or country.

Traffic is one of the reasons I do not get excited to get on the roads, and my time is certainly worth more. It is cheaper to shop online and get it delivered to you than travel to the seller. Ever wondered why there is heavy traffic during the festive period? SHOPPING! Major Nigerian cities affected by traffic congestion can benefit from improved e-commerce penetration in the country.

Beneficial to sellers and buyers alike, according to the real estate firm, Savills, in 2016, Lagos is the most expensive city in Africa. Many businesses fizzle out within their first five years. Some never recoup their rental costs; however, the e-commerce model can eliminate or reduce this cost depending on the circumstances. If retail businesses reduce their overhead costs by adopting e-commerce, they avoid rental charges associated with the brick and mortar model. Perhaps survival rates for such companies will be higher.

Through e-commerce, sellers are now able to sell to consumers outside their local reach. My experience as a business owner, who has engaged both models; your market is limited if you are physical location-based. There’s a broader market beyond your reach; people outside your locality are looking for your product or service. You need to cast a much wider net, and e-commerce helps you do just that. The first time we moved RedViolet Company to the e-commerce model, our revenue improved. Today, Nigerians are shipping from Aliexpress, Amazon and Wayfair. With better e-commerce penetration, e-commerce companies in Nigeria will have foreigners also shopping from them.

With an e-commerce store, sellers have a virtually unlimited space to showcase their products. Every product on your warehouse can easily be represented on your online store using text, images, and videos. Sellers can even list products and ship directly from producers and suppliers, thus minimising or eliminating their need for physical storage space. Brick and mortar stores often face space limitations if you have a varied stock list like ours.

When last did you visit an electronic or furniture store to buy a specific product, only to be told it’s not in stock because of space limitations?

As with all things, many challenges are facing the Nigerian e-commerce sector. Many of these issues are rooted in at least three underlying causes: Poor infrastructure, corruption and lack of trust among Nigerians. Running the e-commerce model requires an excellent internet service, a steady supply of electricity, and a well-developed logistics plan for shipping and delivery. Unfortunately, it’s no longer news that our infrastructure suffers from these inadequacies.

According to Ranker in 2018, Nigeria is the 31st most corrupt country in the world, and Google describes corruption as “dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power…”.

The banking sector is integral to the development of e-commerce in Nigeria. According to Guardian.ng, only 43% of Nigerian adults are banked. That’s 57% of Nigerian adults who don’t have a means of paying for products online. Imagine if our policymakers were to get over corruption and make substantial efforts to improve the situation by creating a conducive and inclusive environment to bring the unbanked into the banking space.

Corruption in Nigeria has also led to over 89 million people in the country living below $2 per day. That nearly half of the country’s population living in extreme poverty. How does this affect e-commerce? People won’t shop online if they don’t have enough to feed themselves. They will not buy online if they cannot afford a connected mobile phone or computer. Do we then conclude that e-commerce is an elitist model in Nigeria?

If you are Nigerian, then you have probably bought into the fear that everyone is out to defraud you of your hard-earned money. Even the police can not be trusted, I often hear. Now imagine trusting an entity you haven’t met with your money in the hope that they will send you a product you have only seen in a picture on your phone or computer. Crazy, right? Worse, the whole Nigerian online scam isn’t helping matters, the reason why in Nigeria and beyond, online stores are prone to more scrutiny than their brick and mortar counterparts.

Occasionally I take the place of customer service and glean from what customers have to say about having to shop on our website. It would be scary to share the thought process of most of our customers, from the fear of identity theft to other issues that are incredibly valid. There needs to be a shift before Nigerians can begin to feel comfortable about shopping online in impressive numbers. Let’s not get carried away by existing traction, its nothing compared to what can be.

The Way Forward

I earnestly believe the Nigerian e-commerce sector can thrive excellently despite existing challenges. For that to happen, all stakeholders need to work together to improve infrastructure, build trust, tailor innovation to meet our cultural inclinations. These solutions need to include subverting corruption and fraud and make information easily accessible.

Building Trust in the Nigerian E-commerce Sector

As established earlier, mistrust is endemic, and it’s highly unlikely that e-commerce will achieve optimum penetration without innovative solutions that build trust. For instance, Jumia led the way using options like cash on delivery to inspire confidence and encourage people to shop online. The strategy worked for some time until the associated risks began to manifest. Some of these risks include:

Homicide and theft.

Probably why Jumia has revamped their payment on a delivery strategy to now include MCash and POS, which eliminate theft by delivery assistants. Other options some small sellers are using to encourage consumers to buy online is bank transfer and confirmed before delivery. With many Nigerian banks offering mobile banking app, money transfer in Nigeria has become very seamless and instantaneous. Even when payment is pre-made, bank transfer gives buyers and sellers a sort of documentation for their transaction.

Mutual Buyer-Seller Protection Through Access to Information

As a seller prioritise information, make your return policy concise and easy to understand and put it where buyers can easily find and read it on your online store.

If your company arranges scheduled delivery, enabling buyers the opportunity to decide and return orders quickly, make the information clear on your website.

Prioritise customer support to answer customer queries.

Ensure proper description of products on your online store; this should include specifications like product colour, size, material, and other relevant information.

Buyers will be able to make informed purchase decisions, and sellers also avoid unwarranted bad reviews from customers who feel misled.

As a buyer, READ! Unfortunately, tagged as our culture, we are not so into reading. We had received bad reviews such as wrong product size delivered when the buyer did not read the product description. Read the seller’s return policy, product-specific return policy, and seller’s terms and conditions before buying online. As they say, the devil is in the details.

If you receive a delivery, check that it lives up to your expectation and that you want to keep it before you damage the packaging. Otherwise, the seller may not accept a return.

Be aware that most companies will not allow the return of perishables.

Often, when returning a product, the buyer is usually responsible for the shipping cost.

To avoid disappointments that you cannot blame on the seller, always read product descriptions and specifications to make sure they fit your need.

Ask customer service questions whenever you are unsure of anything.

Building Trust Through Transparency and Accountability

Policymakers and sellers have this responsibility; equip bodies like Consumer Protection Council (CPC) to maximise protection for Nigerians who shop online and make the Nigerian e-commerce sector a safer avenue for buying and selling.

Sellers, make sure your business is transparent by avoiding practices like hidden charges and policies. Turn on reviews for each product as a gesture of accountability.

Buyers, research an online store before buying from them; check their social media presence, read reviews about their products online, and join forum conversations about the store to find out what others are saying about them. If a store fails to deliver the value you paid for, don’t hesitate to approach the right author miities like the Consumer Protection Council, call them out on social media.

Final Thoughts

E-commerce has dramatically changed the way brands reach consumers, making the process faster and easier for the two parties. With my experience with RedViolet Company, the advantages outweigh the challenges. We stand to gain more than lose by embracing E-commerce.

12 Amazing Tricks To Make Your Landing Page Maximally Effective

0

The main problem of most modern landing pages is that they all look almost the same! But where is the creative approach, the fire and the design frenzy that gives the best results?

We have picked up 12 interesting design and content jams that will attract maximum visitors to your landing page!

Take a look, get inspired, bring your ideas into life, mix these tips with the ones you already know and don’t forget to conduct A/B testing – this is the only right way for creating killer landing pages!

A good landing page is the best solution for increasing the effectiveness of promotion and attracting the maximum audience. But creating a good landing page in a studio is quite expensive. And if you don’t have enough money at the start, but you still need the best solution, you can create a landing using the best website builder you can find! Today, most small business owners do the same way.

  1. Extended forms

Usually, the landing pages use the standard application form with several fields. Most often, the client needs to provide contact information – first name, surname, mail or phone. But in some cases, it is better to create a more detailed form.

For example, if you sell servers, make sure that the client, when filling out the form, can select the module, parameters, server tasks, add the ability to reset values if the client made a mistake in entering. Don’t make these additional fields required, just add them in case.

You will get your leads in any case, even if there are only two or three fields in the form. But it will be interesting for the client to dig a little deeper. He will be able to pick up an exclusive option!

  1. Two CTAs on one page

If there are two calls to action on the landing page at once, they reinforce each other: for example, “Create a free account” and “Download the product”.

Users click on both links, the conversion is growing, and the landing page does its job perfectly!

  1. Specific numbers (results of work)

This is not a new feature, but it is still working perfectly.

Show your customers the results of your work: the numbers are always more convincing than the abstract phrases like «we are the best» or «we have hundreds of successful projects» and so on. Thus, customers will be able to immediately see how many people have already joined the project, how many goals have been set, how many achievements have been made.

  1. Personalization

Faceless «one-size-fits-all» landing pages are the worst thing in the world. Bring life to your one-pager, add fire, and make it interesting a potential client.

For example, the «specific services» page can show photos of employees who are directly involved in the process.

  1. Place important information above the fold

Do not force users to scroll through the page to find basic product information. Try to locate the title, call to action, and theme image above the fold. All additional product information can be placed below.

  1. Convenient question-and-answer form

On many landing pages and sites, you can ask a question only using the classic form. And this means that the customer needs to specify the name and surname, leave the phone and email. Sometimes the customer even has to deal with captcha.

We know that this all is about getting leads. But there is another option – to connect your question-and-answer form to a social network. If the visitor is registered in it, he does not need to fill in anything – just to write down his question! It’s convenient for both the client and the owner – the customer’s contacts are here, and you can continue working with him.

  1. Customer reviews

You can always add customers’ testimonials to the website. But no way you can prove that these testimonials are not fake.

To convince your visitors, add some customer reviews from Instagram with links to users’ accounts. Thus, your visitor can follow the link and check it out!

  1. Show the results of your work

Here’s a good example: you are selling an application with which you can apply various filters to photos using a mobile phone. To make your landing page effective, add beautiful examples of photos processed in this application to it!

What could be simpler and more ingenious? The user immediately sees the result and quickly makes a purchasing decision.

  1. People just love lists

People are attracted to pages with bulleted lists than to pages with plain text (70% versus 55%).

It is indeed much easier to read, for example, the product features when they are presented in the format of a bulleted list.

  1. Use visual elements

If the purpose of the landing is to lead the user to a conversion action, then all the elements should push him to this.

You can use different visual techniques, for example, color, structure or images. A person should glance over it, see at all the key elements and finally come to the CTA button.

  1. Hover-effect

There are many ways to draw attention to certain elements and make your landing page look both dynamic and unusual. For example, when you hover the mouse, the pictures change color, increase, zoom in and out.

This is a very popular feature of all good landing pages. See for yourself: check out these event landing page examples!

  1. Split layouts

Split-screen is a very effective design technique. The point is to draw the user’s attention to every part of the screen – so that the visitor will see all the information you want him to see.

Thus, you can promote two products, two services, two important benefits at a time!

Huawei may get yet another 6-month waiver extension allowing it to push device updates

0

Early this morning in Asia, Politico ran the news that the United States Department of Commerce is expected to extend a limited, temporary waiver for blacklisted firm Huawei.

Politico’s story also mentioned that the department is less likely to respect any last-minute directives from the White House and that the fate of broader export licenses providing relief for the major US chipmakers remains unclear.

Back in August, for the second time, the United States granted Huawei another 90-day Temporary General License that allowed it to service existing networks and equipment and providing software updates and patches to its handsets.

Unfortunately, that temporary license is due to expire on November 18, and at the moment, there appears to be no real deal between Washington, and Beijing that may signal an end to Huawei’s distress.

In spite of all this, sources with the White House say the Commerce Department might grant Huawei yet another Six months Waiver.

According to Politico, the waiver extension may be granted to allow rural telecom firms to maintain and utilize existing Huawei networking equipment and associated software. The previous extensions were related to software, which is also expected here. This potential extension would mean that Huawei and Honor owners will be guaranteed updates from Google at least until May 2020.

However, it’s important to note that this will only be applicable to a series of Huawei, and Honor devices. These are the devices that got Google’s certification before the US ban. In essence, that means the Mate 30, and of course, the Mate X will remain without essential Google services.

Since the Trump administration implemented the ban on the Chinese firm, the U.S. Commerce Department has reportedly received over 260 applications from U.S. firms for licenses to sell goods to Chinese telecom Technologies maker, none of which have been granted till date. A number of US firms and Huawei partners have since cut ties with the Chinese firm.

Earlier in August, President Donald Trump had also said that he does not want more extensions and that when the current one was over there would be no more. The US aside cutting ties with China.s Huawei has also pressured its allies, warning them of the dangers in doing business with the Chinese firms. Although, the Commerce Department and even the Chinese firm has yet to verify whether or not the current extension when it lapses on the 18th will further be extended.

Now that Huawei is currently unable to offer new devices with Google apps installed and the temporary license is set to expire, granting a permanent trade license will ensure that millions get the updates needed and will allow Huawei to resume adding Google Apps to future devices.

Even though this is potentially good news, Ross confirmed that licenses still might not be granted. “Remember too with entity lists there’s a presumption of denial,” Ross said. “So the safe thing for these companies would be to assume denial, even though we will obviously approve quite a few of them.”

In the event that a license is granted, you would assume the immediate beneficiary would be the Mate 30 Pro. It would do wonders for the device, which is currently limited to China, simply due to the lack of Google Play Services. But as usual, the confusion continues over the fate of Huawei’s devices in the wake of the US ban. As we continue tracking these policy updates, we will be sure to inform you as and when we hear more on the matter.

The Razr is back, but it’s now an Android smartphone that can fold in half.

The rebirth of the Motorola Razr has been rumoured for several months now and the Lenovo-owned company is embracing diversity in the world of foldables, with the return of one of its most iconic smartphone models.

As much as Motorola has kept the Razr name alive in some form or another well into the Android era, nothing so far has been able to recapture the magic of the once-mighty brand.

However, from the looks of things, the new Motorola Razr (2019) is a lovely bit of symmetry. The android smartphone was announced on 13th November in Los Angeles, and It’s a flip phone in an age when no one makes calls anymore.

Motorola Razr (2019) specs and features

Motorola Razr (2019) comes with a 6.20-inch touchscreen primary display with a resolution of 876×2142 pixels and an aspect ratio of 21:9. It also features another Quick View screen on the outside of the device with a 2.7” OLED panel and a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels with an aspect ratio of 4:3.

It is powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor and comes with 6GB of RAM.

Running Android 9.0 Pie (for now), the Motorola Razr (2019) packs 128GB of inbuilt storage and is powered by a 2510mAh non-removable battery and supports proprietary fast charging. The device is a single SIM smartphone that accepts an eSIM card.

As far as the cameras are concerned, the Motorola Razr (2019) on the rear packs a 16-megapixel camera with an f/1.7 aperture and a pixel size of 1.22-micron. The rear camera setup has laser autofocus. It sports a 5-megapixel camera on the front for selfies, with an f/2.0 aperture and a pixel size of 1.12-micron.

Connectivity options on the Motorola Razr (2019) include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/No, GPS, Bluetooth v5.00, NFC, USB Type-C, 3G, and 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India). On the phone, sensors include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, compass/ magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor.

The Motorola Razr (2019) measures 172.00 x 72.00 x 6.90mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 205.00 grams and was launched in Noir Black colour.

For all that, it costs $1,500, which is roughly $500 less than Huawei and Samsung are charging for their (albeit larger) folding phones, but it’s $500 more than a new iPhone 11 Pro or Galaxy S10. That’s a hefty price to pay for updated nostalgia.

As it hits shelves early next year, pre-orders are to begin on December 26, 2019, at select retailers before a release date sometime in January 2020 in the US.

The camera and battery life aren’t anything to write home about, although the camera is good on paper, except Motorola have never been known for top-notch camera software. The screen is plastic. The processor is slow. It’s mad expensive, cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Fold, yet pricier than the iPhone 11. But … the new Motorola Razr is a phone you’d still want to have in your hands.

Motorola RAZR (2019)

Despite its shortfalls, the Motorola Razr looks so cool, and whether intended or not, the folding mechanism is a piece of engineering genius that could solve a smartphone problem that no one else is trying to solve. Why? Because the Razr is perhaps the most pocketable smartphone on the market. It will actually fit in your pocket!

Motorola achieved this ultimate pocketability with an ingeniously well-engineered hinge. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Razr is perfectly flat when folded: it has no gap. The Razr has two pieces of metal that snap up against the screen to hold it firmly in place when it’s opened.

Another byproduct of the flip phone is a second screen. The good thing about this is that it lets you use the phone without unfolding it for almost all important features like calls, taking selfies, turning some basic settings off/on and talking to the Google Assistant.

However, Motorola is well aware of the troubling releases of other foldable phones, and in a statement, the company noted:

“We have full confidence in the durability of the Flex View display, and based on our research, it will last for the average lifespan of a smartphone. We acknowledge this is a brand new technology and we are committed to continue improving as the industry evolves. Therefore, we’ve created a world class service package to make sure every Razr customer has an exceptional experience.”

Should defects occur during normal use, Motorola will repair or replace the device free of charge. For anything outside warranty – which lasts one year in the US – the device’s display can be swapped out for $299.

Non-US service plans will be announced later.

Motorola also notes that preorders will open in some European countries in December and that the phone will also be released in Latin America, Asia, and Australia at some point.

Huawei P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro get stable build of EMUI 10

0

The update isn’t widely available yet, but EMUI 10 roadmap confirms update heading to 30+ Huawei models.

Huawei has finally started rolling out stable versions of its EMUI 10 operating system (based on Android 10) for the P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro in Europe.

At IFA 2019, Huawei confirmed the road map for the EMUI 10 update in a session on the new OTA. It appears that the company has plans to seed the OTA to over 30 devices by Q2 2020.

The full update is supposed to first start with the Huawei P30 Pro in Western markets, as we are still unsure which version of the third-party skin will adorn the upcoming Mate 30 series due to the Android licensing and trade currently in place.

Although, several P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro owners in Europe have taken to Reddit to announce they’ve received a final version of the software. The new build is dubbed 10.0.0.168 and weighs a massive 4.47GB, meaning that you should probably make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network before downloading it.

In order to check if you have the stable EMUI 10 update waiting for your P30 Pro or Mate 20 Pro, head to Settings > System > Software updates and check for updates here.

Alternatively, one can also head into the HiCare app and update from there.

P30 Pro EMUI 10

EMUI 10 is Huawei’s newest operating system and was first unveiled at its scheduled Developer Conference back in August. It is easily the Chinese vendor’s best yet, particularly for its new design that makes it easier to use large devices (like the P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro) with one hand by placing the majority of app content towards the middle and bottom of the display.

Users will not only be able to add clock faces and pictures to their always-on display, but Huawei has also launched an always-on display market that’ll provide access to a swathe of designs created by third-parties.

Considering that Huawei phones have always placed a heavy emphasis on their cameras, EMUI 10 does the same. The software dramatically changes the aesthetic of the camera application by introducing a simplified layout that’s more natural overall.

On top of all the standard Android 10 goodies, the EMUI update also brings a few other exciting new features. It comes with a new UI design with a magazine-style layout, an enhanced dark mode, one-touch screen sharing, GPU Turbo upgrades, faster system performance, improved security, and more.

Before the end of the month, Huawei is expected to push the stable EMUI 10 update for the Mate 20 X, Mate 20 RS Porsche Design, Honor 20 series, as well as the Honor Magic 2 in China. However, the global variants of these devices may have to wait until next month to receive a stable update.

Given the issues surrounding Huawei and the US government, it’s unclear if we may face delays in the rollout.

Yodawy, Egypt’s medication & pharmacy benefits platform, raises $1m

0

Yodawy, Egypt’s largest online medication ordering and pharmacy benefits platform and the region’s first digital claims manager raised $1 million to transform the healthcare industry.

The $1m Series A round was led by Egypt’s Algebra VenturesCVentures, with participation from ASI Ventures, an Egyptian angel investor firm.

Founded in 2018, Yodawy is led by CEO, Karim Khashaba, a former consultant at Booz & Company with more than 10 years of experience; CTO Sherief El-Feky, a veteran full stack developer and software architect; and CPO Yasser AbdelGawad, who brings 12 years of experience in digital conversion marketing and product design across Europe and the Middle East.

“There is an incredible opportunity in the pharmacy benefits and claims processing space. It’s an established business model in different parts of the world, with no real solution in the region. Consumers and insurance companies alike are absolutely desperate for a better value proposition.” says Karim Khashaba, Yodawy’s co-Founder and CEO, “… the region has come a long way over the past couple of years, but we still believe very little is being done to address deeper infrastructure gaps. This is where Yodawy is looking to create real impact!” added Karim.

Yodawy has managed to scale from zero to almost half a million orders in less than 12 months, all without prior access to venture capital.

Yodawy enables users to browse and order medications and personal care products through a mobile app. Orders are routed to the best matching pharmacy across a network of 2500+ nation-wide partners. Patients also get access through the app to their medical insurance co-payment plan. If the insurance provider is part of the Yodawy network, the approval process is digitally managed, and the order is routed to the best-matching pharmacy for delivery.

Karim Hussein, Algebra Ventures’ Managing Partner, said, “Yodawy has a very promising team that is led by an experienced and resilient entrepreneur with strong product passion and an ability to attract good talent.” “With their vision, strategy and the outstanding progress Yodawy has been able to deliver outstanding results in their first year of operations, Algebra is truly excited about this opportunity and confident in Yodawy’s ability to lead the digital transformation of the Healthcare sector in Egypt and the MENA region,” he added.

“Yodawy has the potential to become a leading digital pharmacy benefits platform in the region. It’s clear go-to-market addresses fundamental problems experienced by all stakeholders. Their clear go-to-market addresses fundamental problems experienced by pharmacies, insurance companies and their respective customers, effectively adding significant value to all stakeholders. CVentures is excited at the prospect of working closely with Yodawy, and we look forward to helping the Founders achieve their vision and roll-out of additional innovative offerings.” says Emad Fouad, CVentures Managing Director.

Yodawy is operational in 30 cities across Egypt with a network of 2500+ pharmacies, and partners including leading insurance providers with the potential to extend insurance coverage to tens of thousands of patients.
