LEAK: Here’s why the One Plus 5’s June 20th launch might spell doom for its parent company.

0

First off, let’s lay down the background; One Plus is a young company owned by OPPO. On the other hand, OPPO is owned by BBK, which also owns Vivo. So BBK is the parent company we are referring to in the title above.

Apple iPhone 7 Plus
Yap, I know what you are thinking

Earlier today, leaked pictures of the upcoming One Plus 5 started floating around the web. You will be forgiven for thinking that picture is a photoshopped image of another popular smartphone. That was until the press render image below appeared and instantly confirmed the design of the leak above.

Leaked Press render of the One Plus 5

The upcoming One Plus 5 takes very much ‘inspiration’ from the iPhone 7 Plus, especially the dual cameras, antenna design and even the matte black paintjob.

If these images turn out to be legitimate, then BBK might be in very big trouble. Apple once sued Samsung for copying the icon design of apps from iOS and some gestures such as pinch to zoom. The lawsuit settlement was in the billions of dollars category and it got reopened this year. BBK might be facing the same level of fine and a sales ban if Apple takes note.

Many companies have copied Apple’s design language but have gone unnoticed since they are not big enough to threaten the world renowned iPhone, in BBK’s case, One Plus is making headlines in the tech industry, it sells out in a matter of minutes and that might be reason enough to warrant a closer look from Apple. In fact, One Plus is a self acclaimed flagship killer due to its high end specs and low price tag.

Speaking of specs, the One Plus 5 is said to pack a 5.5 inch QHD Optic AMOLED screen, the powerful Snapdragon 835, a humongous 6/8GB RAM depending on storage options which range from 64GB to 128GB. The phone will be running on Oxygen OS based on Android 7.1.1. A dual 12MP camera will grace the back while an 8MP shooter will be on the front. Battery will be capped at 3300mAh with Dash fast charge technology.

In Kenya, the One Plus phones can be found at Avechi. It would be unfortunate seeing the sales of this high end phone banned. Let’s hope all will go well on June 20th.

Nduthi.com, allowing Kenyans to order their dream motorcycles at the click of a button

0

Motorcycles are common mode of transport both in urban and rural Kenya, with bodaboda sector employing at least 4 out of 10 youths in rural counties.

This has seen the demand for motorcycles and spare parts increase tremendously over the past decade.

Even so, most motorcycle buyers in the country find it hard to purchase quality motorcycles for their trade due to limited information available

This has seen most of them conned by middlemen who sell them substandard products at overrated prices, with some forced to waste most time to manually search for their dream motorcycles.

These buyers can now rest easy, thanks to Nduthi.com, an ecommerce platform that points them to credible dealers across the country, offer price estimates and detailed technical information about different types of motorcycles available

The founder

Although Kevin Biwott Koech, an enterprising young Kenyan who has vast knowledge of motorcycles, having been a professional biker since 2006 conceptualized this idea in 2010, it is until 2014 when the initiative came to fruition.

Biwott fell in love with motorcycles when he went to pursue Electronics in India, a country with one of the highest motorcycle penetration in the world.

Just like many other motorcycle enthusiasts in the country, Biwott found it hard to get credible dealers, professional advice and products locally.

This information vacuum is what inspired him to start nduthi.com which currently enjoys at least 10,000 page views per day with thousands of fan thronging the site’s social media platforms. Currently, its Facebook page has over 18,000 followers.

‘Initially, I didn’t know exactly what to offer on the site. Although I lacked clear business goals, I had a deep urge to help Kenyans conveniently get quality bikes at better prices’’

With time and assistance from his partner-his younger brother David Kiptoo, a web developer and cyber security expert, Biwott managed to come up with a well-functioning site that allowed individuals selling second hand bikes reach their prospective customers for free.

He also did frequent blogs offering personal opinion on how to find best bikes for different purpose before he started to engage various dealers for partnership

‘Getting dealers to trust the platform was not a walk in the park. Most of them were skeptical about sharing their business information like prices with a stranger. Others who had internal marketing team were not willing to spend more on external marketers,’’ explained Biwott

After digital marketing wave started to hit the country, thanks to the entry of ecommerce platforms like Jumia, dealers started coming on board.

The site now boast of both international and local motorcycle brands like Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Bajaj, Skygo, Lifan, Bajaj, Hero, TVS and KIM.

How it works

The site has a content sharing model where partners are given unique logging in credentials that allow them post and view information to their prospective clients.

Honda for instance is able to post pictures, prices and description about their products using logging details offered by nduthi.com. Partners can chat with clients and receive orders via the site under observation by nduthi.com administrator

When a customer place an order on the platform, it is viewed both by nduthi.com and the specific dealer. Nduthi.com follows up with the conversation until the purchased product is paid for and delivered to the client.

According to Biwott, nduthi.com earns a commission from every sale made via the site.

Individuals selling their second hand motorbikes are however not charged. Biwott told Techmoran that plans are underway to start charging second hand dealers a small fee.

The site has several sections which includes type of motorcycles. Some of categories in this section includes bodaboda, off road bikes, sport touring, tricycle cargo, sports bike, chopper, scooter, electric bikes and even tuk tuks.

When you click on a type of bike, several information about it is revealed i.e. the model, brand, price and a short bio about its user ability.

It has different dialogue boxes which allows the viewer to search brand, price and efficiency capacity.

It has a cart where a willing buyer can post an order that is viewed by both nduthi.com and its partners.

Other key icons on the site includes:- Find a bike, used bikes, new bikes, sell bike, Find a dealer Finance, Gear shop, Events and a term of conditions.

Besides linking buyers and sellers, nduthi.com has partnered with various finance institutions and dealers who offer higher purchase services and competitive discounts to buyers.

No cyber security threats

Cyber security is a thorn in flesh for the e-commerce sector across the globe. Biwott is however grateful for his brother who is an expert and manages technical aspects.

‘’We conduct regular security surveillance to ensure that information about our partners and visitors is not compromised,’’ assured Biwott

Job creation and expansion plan

Biwott is the Managing Director for this fast growing firm while his brother Davis is an Executive Director.

They have also a team of 5 young Kenyans who help in daily running of the business on part time basis.

Biwott has plans to grow the business beyond Kenya’s border, hoping to rope in the rest of East Africa before covering the continent.

He termed the e-commerce sector targeting machines in Africa as a virgin, explaining that it is only South Africa which has few motorcycle e-platforms in the continent.

He is optimistic that his gradual expansion plan will create hundreds of job opportunities for young people in the region.

0

0

If you’ve ever had to surf the Internet for research materials, you’ll should know how daunting the task can be. One ends up visiting tons of websites just to find the best material.

You can now say goodbye to that stress, as Academix has provides a database of research materials.

Academix is an Africa-focused e-library launched on 1st September, 2015 to meet a growing demand for African focused knowledge.

The portal currently has over 108,000 locally hosted research materials, provides a gateway to over 20 million well researched items from its international partnerships, and offers subscriptions to individuals and organizations.

You will get FREE WhatsApp all day on the new Telkom network, but there’s a catch

0

As part of Orange rebranding to Telkom Kenya, the company introduced Free WhatsApp offer. The offer is seen as one of the ways that will lure the customers to the just released 4G network. To access it, just press *544# then select ‘Free WhatsApp’ option.

As with most offers, there is a catch, well there are several of them actually. First, you need to have more than Kshs. 1 airtime balance, also, you do not get unlimited WhatsApp access, the offer is capped at 50MBs per day. In case the hour hits midnight before you exhaust those MBs, they will not roll over to the next day, they simply expire and you are awarded only 50MBs the following day.

Well, given that this free WhatsApp does not need you to have an active data bundle, we think it is quite generous. Customers will be attracted by the fact that they will always have access to the basic WhatsApp communication features by simply being on Telkom network.

I imagine that this offer will be very popular with students, they no longer have to use their pocket money/ upkeep to access WhatsApp. Considering that texts and pictures on the platform take up very minimal data, 50MBs is enough to go through a whole 24 hrs of chatting, moreso when media auto download option is turned off.

For the data hungry users, Telkom XL bundles born during the Orange regime are still available, they offer data for prices as low as 9 cents per MB which are the cheapest of all service providers.

Now Showing Launches to Provide Movie Updates From Cinemas Across Lagos

0

Everyone hates the feeling of visiting a cinema and the movie that’s showing is just not your kind of movie. At the same time, going from cinema to cinema just find that movie that’s perfect for you is a lot of stress.

This challenge is what ‘Now Showing’ wants to solve.

Launched by Iruafemi Joseph on November 11 2015, ‘Now Showing’ is a movie aggregation app that displays trending movies in cinemas and their streaming times across Lagos, Nigeria.

The platform utilises 4-time filters — Now, Next, Tomorrow and Today — an attempt to make it easy to display only scheduled movies that are relevant to that particular filter.

The Now filter displays movies currently running in various cinemas, Next filter displays showing times for upcoming movies, Today filter provides an all-showtimes list for all the movies at all listed cinemas for that day and the Tomorrow filter displays movies that can be watched the next day.

The platform also provides an API that can be integrated into third-party entertainment sites. This allows them to display show times and sell movie tickets to their visitors. According to the founder, this service is already running on two website.

Similar to ‘Now Showing’ is Kolanuts, which was launched on September 8 2016. Although, the service is still quite new in Nigeria,  the idea is laudable, as millions of Nigerians are movie lovers who do not miss visiting cinemas every weekend.

Orange is now Telkom, introduces 4G network and new logo

0

Orange Kenya was today rebranded to Telkom. This change followed the purchase of 60% stake of the company by Helios and the government of Kenya increasing their stake from 30 to 40% one year ago.

The official rebranding today marked the official exit of Orange from the Kenyan market.

Under the Orange management, the company had gone through troubling times, most costumers in Kenya were opting for its rivals mostly due to network coverage and reliability. Telkom has realized this and they today announced that they had invested Kshs. 5 Billion to expand and improve their network infrastructure. They also doubled the number of agents around the country for better customer support. Perhaps the most important upgrade was to the 4G network which will cover 9 major towns in Kenya namely Nairobi, Nyeri, Nakuru, Eldoret, Embu, Meru,Mombasa, Kisumu and Kakamega. To lure customers, the company is giving 4G internet data access for free. This offer will only be available to those in 4G coverage areas.

As part of the rebranding, the company changed its logo to a blue and yellow themed design; it’s slogan also changed to “Moving with you”. In addition, a lot of the management roles have been switched with new people in the days leading to today’s rebranding. Some Safaricom executives joined Telkom as well as Chris Senanu from Access Kenya who will be the Managing Director of the Enterprise Division.

The company is also planning to get an overhauled mobile money platform that will come to fill the void left by the termination of Orange Money. This solution, however, is to be implemented in the coming months.

Wesabi is Helping Nigerians Find Skilled Artisans in their Neighbourhood

0

Wesabi was launched by Murtala Sanni in July 2015 to help ease the process of searching for proper artisans and craftsmen, which is one very daunting and uncoordinated task in Nigeria.

Through a website and a mobile app, Wesabi helps individuals and businesses find skilled workers in their neighbourhood.

From plumbing to carpentry, tiling, painting, Ac repair, home cleaning, laundry and many other domestic and commercial needs, users make request for the service of an artisan by simply booking through a form on the Wesabi website, then a matching algorithm identifies & alerts the best available worker in the user’s neighbourhood.

Contact details are shared between users and artisans, and payment is only made after the job has been completed. The platform also enables users to review workers at the end of a job, which is aimed at making them accountable.

In addition to its services, Wesabi provides insurance protection free for users, which covers property damage or rare theft. This it says, is for users to have “an ultimate peace of mind knowing that every eligible task they request is covered by the Wesabi Insurance”.

Startups like Wesabi,  providing artisans for domestic needs have suddenly become popular, and are solving real problems faced by Nigerians.

Sidekicke assistants are graduate students, pregnant mothers, single parents and skilled people looking to make extra income.

The use of virtual assistants is a popular culture in many developed cities around the world. Apple unveils a new iPad Pro 10.5 with HDR screen and a 12-core graphics unit.

0

Apple just unveiled the new iPad Pro 10.5 in the ongoing WWDC conference. The tablet marks the third iPad in the Pro series after the 9.7 inch and 12.9 inch launched last year.

The Pro has slimmer bezels and 20% more screen estate than the 9.7 inch. In addition, the screen has a max brightness of 600 nits which is a healthy gap above the 400 nits average on most devices. Apple didn’t stop there, they built a 120HZ refresh rate which translates to an industry-leading 20ms latency when using the Apple Pencil. The refresh rate is variable, that is, it will only kick in when you need it hence saving power when not in use. Best of all, the new iPad comes with the new trending HDR screen technology making it the first Apple iOS based product to support it.

This and more power saving features of the new iOS 11 will lead to a 10 hour battery life and fast charge thanks to USB 3.0 based connector.

Under the hood is a 6 core Apple A10X Fusion chipset. Three of those cores are power saving while the other 3 are high performance ones. The chip will be accompanied by a whopping 12-core graphics unit. This setup will translate into 30% more power in CPU and 40% improvement in GPU compared to the previous generation.

On the photography front, The iPad Pro 10.5 will have the same exact camera combo as the iPhone 7,that’s is, 12MP with OIS and f/1.8 on the back while the front will have a 7MP selfie shooter. This is quite amazing considering that tablet’s aren’t really used for taking photos and most manufactures don’t equip them with half-decent shooters.

Prices compared to the bigger 12.9 inch iPad Pro launched last year

The new iPads won’t come cheap considering all the high end specs; the base WiFi version with 64GB goes for $649. The 4G LTE version requires an extra $130 above that price. The iPad Pro 10.5 will launch with a iOS 10 but will later get an upgrade to iOS 11 towards the end of the year when it gets released to the public, the new OS version will bring the new Files App, better split screen multitasking and a smarter Siri among other features.

First time ever, iOS gets file manager app; new ipads and more coming in Apple WWDC conference tonight

0

Apple’s iOS, which is two years older than Android, does not come with a pre-installed File Manager App. Users have to look for their own means of accessing their files saved in…wait, the OS does not have memory card support either. Things are about to change however, according to a recent leak, a file manager app will come with the new iOS version 11 which is being launched tonight. It seems even the team at Apple was so happy about this overdue feature that it placed it in the appstore before it’s announcement. The link has already been pulled down, as you would expect, but a hawk eyed user had already taken a screenshot.

Many other things will be introduced in the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC)  starting tonight at 8pm (GMT +3).

The conference is taking place from June 5th – 9th. The major focus of the event is on Apple’s software offerings but every now and them new hardware is unveiled.

Here’s an outline of what to expect

I had the pleasure to interview them and find out how exactly they ensure business continuity.

Continuity East Africa is a South African company that is owned by Internet Solution Kenya -it is good to note that Internet Solutions also owns Access Kenya- the company is based at USIU and serves the whole of East Africa on three main tasks, Data Recovery solutions, Advisory and Business Continuation.

To explain data recovery, let’s take a look at the WannaCry attack. The ransomware would cripple a computer by encrypting all its files then hold then ransom. The user would be forced to pay $300 within a given period of time in order to get the decryption key. At this point, the user had two options, either pay the $300 and hope that the attackers would be true to their word and release a decryption key, which is not a solid solution at all. Second option is that the business would simply restore all their data saved in a remote location and continue with business as usual. Continuity East Africa makes the second solution possible, they have data recovery services that safely store your company’s files in a remote location, in case your systems are compromised, you can tap into the remotely stored data and continue with your business operations. Continuity East Africa already has Kshs. 200 million data recovery centre built in Kenya.

The company also offers advisory services to businesses. You simply walk into their offices and tell them what business you are in; from there they will advise you on ways to best secure its continuity. They will dissect various aspects of your business and determine what is recoverable in the occurrence of a disaster; this is called a business continuity plan. Each business is different and unique in its own way, for instance, some business have in-house servers with technical teams to operate them, others outsource these technical aspects and simply focus on their core business. Continuity East Africa understands these differences exists and they tackle them by tailor-making a continuity plan based on the unique attributes of your business, not a one-fits-all kind of solution.

Lastly, they offer Business Continuity, this is a culmination of the other two discussed above. There are different services offered to make sure you are protected and will not need to do data recovery in the first place.  These activities include cooperate email services, anti-phishing solutions, website reputation systems and many more.

Not much can be done after an cyber-attack is successfully executed and the victim did not have prior protection measures in place, the best time to get prepared is now, get ahead of the disaster by having a safety net set up. The next cyber-attack is only a click away, Continuity East Africa is the safety net your business needs right now.

Google, check Wikipedia on your analogue phone without internet, only with ONEm services

0

Ponder this- chatting with people across the world using your analogue phone, let’s say Nokia 7020 or 1100 without internet.

You can still create chat groups just like on Whatsapp where when a member sends a voice or text message, everyone in the group gets it regardless of time zones, phone types and even networks.

This is not a script for a fictional movie. In fact, 5.8 billion people across the globe can now use these services provided by OneM , an emerging world giant in mobile telecommunication, which has designed simple, cheap and effective technology that allows people to chat online for free without internet or smart phones

The unique innovation that marries traditional and modern day technology is fast growing in the world, with countries like Uganda and Tanzania already it in the region.

Speaking exclusively to TechMoran from the United Kingdom, ONEm Chief Executive Officer Christopher Richardson said that this innovation is specifically designed to help people in the developing world to exploit available resources for positive social economic transformation

‘’ONEm is working with  existing mobile phone operators to reach and help  billions of people in the worlds who have no access to internet to create and share information at much affordable fee,’ said Christopher.

He explained that ONEm in Africa will give face to an old adage-Information is power, as it is designed to fuel people to people communication.

If a service provider like Safaricom partners with ONEm, subscribers can easily form chat groups where they can share information i.e security alerts and sale merchandises.

In this case, Safaricom gets a chance increase its functionality hence tapping in more subscribers. Subscribers on the other hand benefit from multiple information channels

How it works

ONEm partners with the existing mobile operators to enable users connect with each other with their membership ID for unlimited conversations either person to person or as a group.

In Tanzania for instance, ONEm is partnering with Smart Tanzania, a regional mobile phone provider in Uganda and Burundi to give its customers a chance to access group chat service and internet content such as Wikipedia and Reuter’s news without the use of data.

In Uganda, the firm is partnering with Independent, where the publisher is offering its news on the ONEm platform for readers in Uganda and the rest of the World.

Postboard and xGroups

One of these products is Post board, a community driven bulletin board where any user can post anything they like whether its business or social

This tool works like classified ads where people can buy and sell things

Its functionality mirrors that of WhatsApp where group members can share information. It however goes beyond individuals and a single group as it allows users to share information in different groups

The Ministry Internal Security for instance can buy a Post board code from ONEm which it can use to share and exchange security information with chiefs, village leaders or general public across the country via Safaricom, Airtel or Orange telephony

In this case, the ministry caters for the code’s post, allowing members of the public to receive information for free and engage with each other at normal fee charged by Safaricom, Airtel or Orange

This means that the mobile phone operator who partners with ONEm increases both revenue and customer subscription

When the users send voice/MMS or SMS via this platform, it is only their names that are displayed and not their phone numbers. Only the operator and ONEm are able to access mobile phone numbers

This means that users are secured from stokers and cyber criminals who can use their phone details for criminal activities.

Work with existing mobile operators-Through the Operator model (TTO)

Christopher explained that ONEm’s Through the Operator Model (TTO) give partner operator free access to the data centre to enable its customers to send voice and text messages to many receivers, and access other Internet-based data such as Wikipedia at a small fee.

‘’This is opposed to OTT (Over the top) system which works over the user’s data networks to access services where operators do not charge anything,’’ he added.

The ONEm ecosystem allows operators to innovate quickly without any investment in additional infrastructure.

The new Moto Z2 Play measures only 6mm and takes Moto Mods to a whole new level

0

Motorola followed up its modular phone with a sequel. Meet the Moto Z2 Play, it has retained the mods technology unlike the LG G6 that ditched it. Motorola has not only made the Z2 Play compatible with previous mods that came with the great Moto Z we recently reviewed,  but also introduced new ones.

First of, the Moto Z2 Play has a few design and internal components changes. The 5.5 inch Full HD remains intact, the CPU however has been improved to the energy efficient Snapdragon 626 with either 3GB or 4GB depending on storage option taken; there is 32GB & 64GB respectively. Micro SD storage expansion is also supported.

Moto Z2 Play comes with a splash proof body packing a 3000mAh battery which is a downgrade from last year’s 3510mAh. Perhaps the 1mm thinner body might be a consolation, it is now measuring only 6mm.

Android 7.1.1 runs the show as is customary for Motorolas getting early updates due to their lean software add ons. The rear camera is equipped with the great 12MP sensor which has dual pixel technology for light speed focusing just like the Samsung Galaxy S8. It has f/1.7 aperture size which is big enough to guarantee great low light photography. The selfie department is covered by a 5MP, f/2.2 wide angle shooter.

Now, we were saving the best for last, say hello to Moto Mods.  The width and height of the Moto Z2 Play have been kept similar to last year’s successor to make sure all the previous Moto mods fit perfectly.

New mods were launched, they include

Turbo Power Pack

-Has 3490mAh battery

-Fast charges the phone

-Costs $79

Moto GamePad

  • Dual analog sticks
  • D Pad

  • 1035mAh battery

  • Costs $79

The Moto Z2 Play cost $499 and goes on sale in the US on summer with Global expansion coming shortly after

8GB RAM becomes a reality in the new ZTE Nubia Z17, a bezelless phone endorsed by Christiano Ronaldo.

    0

People are still trying to wrap their heads around 6GB RAM phones especially when the majority of laptops are still stuck at 4GB. If you have been wondering why a phone needs all that RAM, you are not alone, but in China, specs wars are real, only those will the biggest guns at the lowest prices win.

The ZTE Nubia Z17 fits this profile, it even gets an endorsement from Christiano Ronaldo, the best footballer right now. It’s headline features are 5.5 inch Full HD IPS screen that has no side bezels at all and a whopping  8GB RAM. That’s is enough to have multiple Triple A games running at the background at the same time without the phone breaking a sweat. Thanks to the latest Snapdragon 835, the huge amounts of RAM have a worthy companion. The big sizes dont end there, the phone has 64GB base storage and 128GB version is also available as well.

The camera is also another headliner, it is a dual sensor with 23MP + 12MP combo that supports 2x optical zoom and up to 10x Dynamic zoom, like the iPhone 7 Plus. The selfie is equipped with 16MP shooter with a wide 80 degree angle of view and f/2.0 aperture.
The Nubia Z17 also has IP67 water and dust resistant rating, ZTE went ahead to hold the launch event at the National Aquatic Center to drive that point home. They also announced that the 7.6mm body packs a 3200mAh battery that has the new Quick Charge 4.0 technology that fills 0-50% in a mere 25 minutes. A feature called Neo Power 3 will assist suspension of background processing to stretch the battery life to two days. The longevity is also aided by the Android 7.1.1 Nougat that is running under the Nubia UI 5.0.

Other goodies include a Dolby Atmos speaker for sound enhancement and IR blaster for using  Z17 as a remote control.

Despite all this superfluous specs, the price is very reasonable, the 6GB RAM +64GB Storage costs $411, the 6GB+128GB costs $499 and finally the top shelf  8GB+128GB costs $583. Color options are Black and Gold, Black, Gold, Red, and Blue.

All you need to know about Essential Phone, a masterpiece device made by the man that created Android OS

    0

Andy Rubin, the inventor of the Android OS, has made a move to the hardware industry. His latest creation is the near bezelless device going by the name Essential Phone.

While at the Code Conference 2017, Rubin took the stage to unleash the 5. 71 inch phone whose screen occupies the whole top, left and right corners of the phone while still managing to fit an 8MP selfie camera. Essential phone comes with a resolution of 2460 x 1312 IPS screen, 4GB RAM and a monstrous 128GB base storage. Under the hood is a snapdragon 835 and a 3040mAh battery. The version it is running wasn’t mentioned but considering this is the man behind the OS, we expect nothing less than the latest Android 7.1. The main camera on the back is a dual 13MP shooter , one of them being a monochrome sensor for better low light photography; right below the camera is a fingerprint sensor for extra security.

The Essential Phone’s 7.8mm body is built with a ceramic back, Gorilla glass 5 and a titanium frame, rest assured that it can withstand several falls without a scratch.

Rubin kept insisting that there is no bloatware or clutter on the Essential phone to spoil the user experience, in fact, the phone doesn’t even come with a name label.

The device also embraces the modular technology, it comes with two POGO pin connectors at the back to attach hardware components such as a 360 camera, Rubin was keen to point out that it is the thinnest camera of its kind in the world. In addition, there is a dedicated wireless data transfer connector that supports speeds of up to 6Gbps

In terms of pricing and availability, the Essential Phone is already up for pre-order at the price of $699. In case you want the 360 camera too, there is a bundle which costs $750 which includes the phone. Once the pre-order period is over, the camera will be sold at $199; shipping starts on 30th June.

Ikokuonline.com Launches to be Nigeria’s Biggest eCommerce Platform for Car Parts

    0

As eCommerce keeps growing, it’s now possible to purchase almost anything online. We’ve gone from fashion, to gadgets, food and groceries, now ecommerce for the auto industry is beginning to gain grounds.

Ikokuonline is an ecommerce platform that claims to be an online shop for all ‘your car needs’.

The platform  was launched by Fortune Bekee in March 2017 to provide instant delivery of car parts and car maintenance services to homes and offices.

Ikokuonline is currently providing this service to just Port Harcout residents, with plans to expand to other states. According to the founder, “the auto parts market in Port Harcourt, can boast of at least N25million a day and we want to capture a significant share of that daily revenue while solving a bunch of problems faced by car owners, including the stress of leaving their homes or office to the auto parts market”.

Named after renowned automobile village in Port Harcourt, known as Ikoku, the platform works like every other ecommerce platforms. Members create an account, log in and shop for whatever car parts or services they need. Products on the site range from brake pads to tyres, wheels, car grilles, bumpers and many other accessories.

We thought we had seen it all with the launch of eTyres, but Ikokuonline is bringing the entire auto industy online, and we hope they launch to other states soon enough, as there’s probably an entrepreneur in a corner looking to dominate the market.

Internet Society unveils new Internet Security Guidelines for Africa

    0

Internet Society in collaboration with the Africa Union Commission today released new Internet Security Guidelines for Africa during the African Internet Summit that has been ongoing in Nairobi from 30th May to 2nd June.

This security talks have become more popular in the country after the wake of Cyber attacks such as WannaCry and the recent Safaricom network outage that some are putting in the same category.

The unveiled Internet Security guidelines are the first of their kind in the continent. While interviewing Michuki Mwangi, Senior Development Manager for Africa, he said that every developed continent already has their guidelines in place, it was time for Africa to level up. He added that the guidelines were tailor made for the special conditions that Africa presents such as technical skills of the users in the continent.

According to Deloitte Global Threat Index, Kenya is ranked at 69 out of 127 most vulnerable countries. The main reasons being given include low awareness, under investment and data overload. The country also lost $171 million to cyber crime in 2016 alone hence the need for such guidelines.

The guidelines are targeting to strengthen the local Internet infrastructure through actions at the regional, national, operator and organizational level. When I asked about the personal level recommendations, Mr. Mwangi insisted that users should know who they are sending or receiving data from while online, they should also not ignore updates from apps, operating systems or anti viruses, “they are not only about fixing bugs and improving performance, but they also fix security loopholes” he concluded.

For those who would like to have a detailed look at the guidelines, feel free to find a copy here.

Gionee S10 is an iPhone 7 Plus look-alike but with 4 cameras, 6GB RAM and half the price, S10B and S10C also unveiled.

    0

Gionee has been making airwaves with photography, the other day they introduced a phone with higher resolution selfie than the rear camera and now they are back with a new camera milestone.

Meet the Gionee S10, it comes with dual cameras on both the front and rear. The selfie combo is yet again having more resolution than the rear shooter with 20MP + 8MP as opposed to the 16MP + 8MP on the back. Both 8 MP on either sets are used for wide angle photography and bokeh effect but the company has gone further to add the ability to measure distances.

The rest of the specs include a 5.5″ 1080p LCD with 2.5D curved glass, Android 7.0 Nougat is being driven by a MediaTek Helio P25 chipset with octa-core processor accompanied by whopping 6GB of RAM and 3450mAh battery all enclosed in a 7.4mm body.

The company also unveiled Gionee S10B, it has a dual rear camera, 13MP+5MP, but loses the dual selfie in favour of a 16MP camera. The RAM is still generous at 4GB coupled with Mediatek Helio P10 and a bigger 3700mAh battery. Everything else is similar to the more premium S10.

Lastly, there is a budget oriented Gionee S10C, it is stripped of all dual cameras to keep the price low. A 13MP main camera and a 16MP selfie camera take care of photography needs. Snapdragon 427 is used instead of a Mediatek processor. RAM is capped at a commendable 4GB while the screen shrinks to 5.2 inch with 720p HD resolution and a 3100mAh battery.

In terms of price, the Gionee S10 goes for $378 which is around half the cost of the iPhone 7 Plus that it resembles, the S10B goes for $320 and lastly the S10C is priced at $233. Those prices are very reasonable considering the specs you get, I cannot wait to get a chance to take these phones for a test run.

Growsel is Connecting Local Farmers to Investors

Although Agriculture contributes to 30% of Nigeria’s GDP, a number of farmers still struggle to make things work, and grow their farms as a result of limited funds.

Growsel is looking to change this by empowering under-financed farmers across Nigeria. The platform is a farmers’ marketplace that connects local farmers to investors.

Growsel also goes further to provide access to global best agricultural practical advice through SMS to local farmers without internet.

For farmers seeking investments, they simply sign up on the website, and then get connected to individual and corporate investors for funding within the estimated fund raising duration before cultivation.

After harvest, Growsel also helps farmers provide partner uptakers who are always available to buyout produce from farms.

For investors, they in turn can browse through available farming projects; select a crop and farm of their choice and invest in line with budget and estimated ROI.

Farm updates from weeding, planting to fertilizing and chemical applications to harvesting are sent to investors via photos, videos and chats in real time from surveyors in the field using our exclusive Farm Monitory Feature. With an approval from Growsel, investors can also inspect a farm directly in the field.

The agricultural sector is beginning to enjoy tech solutions that are improving lives and developing the industry. Growsel’s offering is laudable, as people who have probably killed their dreams of  going into farming now have an opportunity to begin their farming businesses. We only wonder how Growsel would bring these farmers on board, as most local under-financed farmers have no access to the internet.
