Farm Fresh is Providing More Exposure to Farmers’ Local Products

0

In Gambia, IT entrepreneur Modou Njie saw an opportunity to buy food directly from local food producers and cut out the middleman, launching Farm Fresh.

The idea sprung from his frustration at buying imported fruits and vegetables at premium prices and its unsustainability. He also read a lot about the health implications of consuming canned and processed food. He became motivated by the fact that he found so many women engaging in horticultural activities who lacked the market to sell their products, and felt that he could act as a gateway.

The agricultural production is the main economy activity in Gambia but has declined as a result of several factors including poor rainfall distribution, weak marketing infrastructure, lack of access to credit with limited resources base. The access to healthy and affordable food for the public is not easy, as well as the marketing of farmers’ products which is not developed and leads to the food waste and losses.

Farm Fresh is a Gambian social enterprise that is trying to solve the marketing of smallholder farmers’ local products through an e-commerce platform. They specialize in the marketing and selling online (e-commerce) of fresh and locally grown vegetables, fruits and processed food items in partnership with farmers and food processors across the country.

By partnering with farmers, Farm Fresh ensures a regular source of income generation for farmers thereby contributing towards poverty alleviation. Farm Fresh thus intervenes in the value chain by bridging the existing gap between production and delivery; and therefore being a crucial player in the marketing unit of the value chain. Its website offers more than 100 products, while farmers receive specific orders and a guarantee the produce will be bought from them.

Farm Fresh has seen steady demand in its first year and is soon launching in Sierra Leone with plans to extend to Senegal and Ghana among other potential partners in 4 other countries in Africa including South Africa.

Display & Design

The OPPO F3 has a 5.5 inch Full HD display that is bright enough for visibility in direct sunlight. Flip the scene and go to dim lit room, the display can reduce its brightness to a level that won’t let u squint to see. However, I have seen other phones go to lower brightness settings for an even more comfortable reading experience in the dark.

Fortunately, the F3 comes with eye protection mode that gives the display a yellow tint that filters out harmful light.

The display is covered by a beautiful 2.5D glass that is a pleasure to touch especially when swiping on the screen. OPPO was generous enough to attach a glass protector on top. A clear case silicon cover is also in the box to cover the slim metallic body.

Performance

The OPPO F3 is a pleasure to use. Many people might frown after seeing a Mediatek 6750T on the specs sheet, but thanks to the enormous 4GB RAM, the performance is flawless! I have played a few gaming titles on the device, some of them are light such as Vertigo Racing, others have heavy graphics such as Mortal Kombat X and they all flow smoothly.

Heavy games like Mortal Kombat X play smoothly

The multi tasking interface is a horizontally scrollable list unlike the vertical setup of stock Android. You can stick apps to remain on the memory by slightly pulling its card downwards .

Software

This is the place that die hard fans of stock Android will have a hard time navigating. Firstly, the OPPO F3’s Color OS 3.0 doesn’t have an app drawer. There’s no option to bring it back like they do on Samsung or LG. A third-party launcher keeps getting removed once you press the home button, the Color OS home launcher is restored instantly. Fortunately there is a universal search that can save you the hustle of looking through all the apps scattered on the display

The notification panel is also completely altered. When you pull it down, you are taken to the quick settings, swipe left to right and get the notifications. There is no option of viewing the notifications first. Moreover, you cannot edit the quick settings toggles to add, remove or rearrange them. Notifications can not be expanded and they do not have quick reply options. No icons are shown on the notification bar up top, you are forced to pull down the notification shade to find out what app just made an alert. This is not a convenient method at all.

On a positive note, the notification bar shows the data you have used so far on daily and monthly basis.

Also, OPPO F3 doesn’t come with bloatware which is a nice touch. You only get few extra apps such as “Security” app for virus scanning and “Backup and Restore” app which can backup system data, app data and even clone your previous phone’s information to your new OPPO F3.

In terms of customization, there is a theme store and quick gestures such as drawing figures on the screen to activate tasks or apps. Three finger swipe from top to bottom takes a screen shot.

The front mounted finger print scanner is fast and accurate. It can register multiple prints. You cannot use the sensor for other tasks though.

Camera

The OPPO F3 comes with a dual selfie camera, one is 16MP for high resolution solo shots + 8MP for group selfies. There are 3 other modes which include GIF for making short clips which play on repeat loop, double exposure for combining two pics into one, and live filters. Beauty mode is also present.

The rear camera caps at 13MP with single LED and share all the modes of the selfie shooters. It takes pictures really fast thanks to Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) technology. There is an expert mode for manual controls and an Ultra HD mode for taking 24MP pictures, double the resolution of the sensor.

As far as quality goes, the pictures taken are sharp with beautiful true to life colors. Some people prefer more saturation but OPPO goes for realistic color rendering. However, the selfie camera tends to over expose scenes so you need to focus properly or reduce exposure for best results.

Solo shot angle
Wide angle selfie, you can see almost half the field

The rear camera is more mature, it doesn’t over expose, its colors are a bit richer and the very fast snap times mean you won’t miss any action. It’s low light capabilities are better than those of the selfie camera.

More image analysis will come in the full in-depth review.

Battery

The 3200mAh battery is not a road warriors but it is just enough to take you through a whole day. Especially if you enable the “Low Power mode”. It’s very unfortunate that the phone does come with Ultra low power mode for those desperate times. Also, the settings menu omits hardware battery usage so we cannot tell the on-screen times.

Fast charge is present, but it is not the ultra fast VOOC charge technology that come with other OPPO phones.

Watch out for the full review that will explore all these areas in more detail.

KitchenSoko Delivers Fresh Groceries Straight from the Farm to Your Home

0

While Winston Wachanga began growing a tomato farm of his own in central Kenya, he experienced the same struggle of various farmers across the country trying to find a buyer.

To solve this problem, Wachanga set up online delivery company Kitchen Soko. In less than a year he has built up a network of 80 local farmers in Kenya whose produce is delivered in a box straight to the customer’s front door.

Kitchen Soko is a fresh food market business enabling you to easily and conveniently buy fresh food directly from the farmers/food producers.

The company offers customers a wide variety of locally sourced, organic and sustainable produce, meat and other food by aggregating goods from multiple farmers and creating a delivery system that can bring together a single order of food within two days. This gives shoppers a wide range of options, including seasonal produce, meats or fish, breads and cheese, as well as pre-made snacks and meals.

One can order online, on phone or through email, the food is prepped as per the order and then it’s aggregated, packed and delivered to your door.

Customers can find out exactly which farm the produce has come from. As such they can avoid consuming toxins in food provided by big suppliers in Nairobi. Recent tests on a sample of food bought in markets and supermarkets in the city found kale containing toxic levels of lead and fruit containing traces of calcium carbide.

Wachanga is one of the tech entrepreneurs tapping into Africa’s middle class as well as the continent’s improving access to internet. In 2013 McKinsey estimated that by 2025 e-commerce could account for 10% of retail sales in Africa’s largest economies.

Kitchen Soko now supplies 500 boxes a week. Expats make up about one quarter of Kitchen Soko’s clients, while the rest are local. You too can join his growing customer base and receive fresh, organic groceries by clicking here.

SchoolPurse.ng Wants to Make School Fees Payment Easy for Nigerians

0

When it comes to paying the school fees of their wards, one challenge many parents and guardian face is being able to get funds ready before the start of a school term, and as such, end up staying in the debt, while the school waits endlessly to receive payment each term.

School Purse is trying to make the process easier for both parents and schools. The platform is a free, easy-to-use and more effective way for schools to receive school fees instantly and securely. It provides payment flexibility by enabling parents make payment through automated scheduling, that is; parents would have paid their wards school fees in monthly installment before the start of a new term. SchoolPurse promises to improve school’s cash flow by 11% and reduce late payments and bad debts by 50%.

To use the platform, parents simply create an account for free, schedule your monthly payments for their children, which are automatically processed using a selected debit card card or bank account.

Launched in March 2017 by Stanley Ojadovwa, the platform provides parents with a convenient way to manage school fees; ability to spread payment by regular Direct Debit; make split payments for kids in one or more school; a dashboard to monitor school fee payments and regular statements each time a payment is made.
For schools, they are able to reduce administration with automatic processing and automatic reconciliation, receive funds directly deposited into their current bank account and view payments in an easy-to-use central dashboard.
Another interesting feature of School Purse is the Credit Finance it provides for parents, which enables them to pay their children’s school fees while they pay back later.
While there are other educational service startups, School Purse is bringing something different to the table, which is highly laudable.

Africa Prize For Engineering Innovation Was Won By This Nigerian Startup

Africa is a hotbed full of opportunities. We are no longer waiting for the government to create solutions for our problems, instead we are creating startups and implementing plans and structures that work. We have been given different platforms that are willing to fund solutions that are sure to be useful. One of the most popular platforms that have been helping startups and particularly engineers is the Royal Academy of Engineering. The academy facilitates startups that need to push their businesses and have the right technology and team on board.

One of the most impressive engineers that presented his startup was a 27-year-old Nigerian systems engineer that won the Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering innovation. His presentation was simple yet very powerful at the same. He designed Tuteria, an online platform that links students to qualified tutors in their area and within their budget. Users can learn anything from a language to Mathematics. He stated that all the tutors are rated by the clients and before the tutors teach they are usually analyzed and go through a thorough evaluation.

At the award ceremony which was held in Nairobi, Kenya on 23rd May 2017, the four finalists delivered presentations and were then judged by a live audience and four Africa Prize judges. The three runners up were from Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa.  Mr. Benson said he was inspired to build this startup after one of his friends son had issues with his classes in schools and getting a tutor was a tedious process. Tutors are paid once the lessons have been confirmed while Tuteria takes 15 to 30% commission for each paid lesson.

For a period of 6 months sixteen shortlisted Africa Prize entrants from different African countries received training and mentoring which they learned to develop business plans and market their innovations. Although Godwin’s Tuteria was probably the best because it is a startup that can penetrate through the African market and change the way Nigerian and Africans share knowledge. As his first prize win, he got £25,000. While the runners up got £10,000.

The three runners up were:

  1. Andre Nel from South Africa for the GreenTower Microgrid system, which reduces the energy used to heat water by 90%. A single unit can service 15 homes and reduce electricity demand from a community by 65%.
  2. Hindu Nabulumba from Uganda for the Yaaka Digital Learning Network, which teachers and students can use to share academic knowledge and materials.
  3. Kelvin Gacheru from Kenya for the Mobi-Water system, which allows water tank users to monitor and control the water in their tanks remotely using a mobile phone. Users will be able to save more than 30% of their water.

This New Startup Will Use Banana Fiber To Make Sanitary Pads

0

While others complain about problems other people looks for solutions to solve those problems. This was the case with three Technology graduates from Massachusetts Institute. Three brilliant ladies developed a biodegradable sanitary pad that is made from banana fibre specifically for the Indian market. They started their project last year October but has gained so much popularity over a few months. Since many women in rural India lack sanitary pads the three female engineers knew that their startups would be a hit.

saathi health care
image: the economics time

These sanitary products are different from commercially available pads which are usually made out of bleached wood pulp. As a matter of fact normal pads can cause skin irritation because of the super absorbent polymer it has. This new organic kind of pad is made from fibre from discarded banana trees. Since there are many acres of banana trees in India, after harvest farmers cut down and discard the old to trees to plant new ones. These discarded fibres are bought from banana farmers to make an extra income for their agro by product. It is also environmental friendly and degrades within six months. The organization known as Saathi will work with foundations to be able to distribute 10,000 units among women in rural areas as part of uts OneMillionPads programme.

South Africa’s EmptyTrips, an ‘Uber’ for cargo aims to go global to tackle the $8.1 trillion+ logistics industry

South Africa’s  EmptyTrips, an open marketplace paired with smart algorithms to match demand and supply of cargo transport is using smart-mapped spaces to reduce wastage on moving vehicles to offer cost-savings and lower transport costs hence reducing the barriers to entry of products across Africa.

Speaking to TechMoran, Benji Coetzee, Founder and CEO EmptyTrips said, “Proving new business models and innovative thinking can connect Africa and enable growth assures the investment community that we are moving Africa forward, smartly. Ultimately, we aim to reduce the number of empty vehicles due to better utilization, leading to lower congestion, and as such, is better for the environment.”

According to Benji the inspiration to start EmptyTrips came to her approximately 2 years ago when she was on route to Johannesburg from Durban and passed many empty trucks and rail wagons.

She recognized the irony of his consulting clients’ complaints of expensive transport costs absorbing margins. Applying economic theory it simply didn’t make sense; excess supply leads to lower prices?  So the idea of matching demand and supply for transport to create an equilibrium price would be more fair…she thought.

That is when she decided that something needed to be done, a smart market for transport was needed and technology held the key. Benji and Herman Strauss, the CTO  committed time, effort, funds and agility to develop what EmptyTrips now offers.

“By closing the gap, this simple, yet practical innovation would change the face of an old and traditional industry, by filling empty spaces to places for less it enables sustainable growth of sectors and reduces the impact on the environment,” Benji told TechMoran.

The South African freight industry is estimated around R500bn (USD38bn) per annum, growing at ~6,6% year on year. Within this industry, a major issue of high capital costs, low yields and reality of  30-40% inefficiency in the form of empty return legs (i.e. vehicles returning empty) is what EmptyTrips is tackling. By using smart-mapped spaces it aims to reduces wastage on moving vehicles to offer cost-savings. It also encourages competitive transparency in the industry with its online bidding portal for logistical shipments and aim to support delivery of aid to places where needed for less. These lower transport costs, reduces the barriers to entry of products across Africa (enabling trade), and lowers inflation linked increases for consumers in every-day products.

“We aim to go global, where the logistics industry is estimated at + USD 8,1 trillion, a very large opportunity given that we can replicate and scale our solution,” Benji told TechMoran.

EmptyTrips also created one of the first digital cargo insurance products of its kind, which it aims to white-label and make available with or without purchasing cargo transport via EmptyTrips. Insurance is offered to the cargo owner and is underwritten by Hollard insurance, with it has a strategic alliance. The global cargo / marine insurance industry  is estimated at USD33bn in premiums per annum.

Furthermore, logistics is one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions Benji says adding that the firm aims to reduce the number of vehicles that are needed for transport reducing empty return legs with economic goods providing better asset utilization, leading to lower congestions, and as such, is better for the environment.

EmptyTrips use an open marketplace paired with smart algorithms to better match demand and supply of cargo transport. It’s self-developed algorithms match the route of the transport with geo-mapping, the size of the decks-space and the date (with flexibility) creating multiple if-functions to find matches at cost.
It also uses the PHP MVC framework for the code with controllers that contain functions that handle logic and reference the Model functions. The result of the Controller functions are passed to the Views (V) where they are presented to the user by means of HTML, Bootstrap CSS, various Javascript plugins and basic interface logic. Lastly, jQuery is used to manipulate the visible interfaces as well as make calls to the EmptyTrips API (Application Program Interface).  These API URLs (links) point to the relevant Controller functions needed to process information or serve static pages. The API calls are secured by means of the CSRF tokens.

Benji thanks the government for doing what it has done for hard infrastructure but says its now time to look into soft infra.

“Often the exponential impact and potential that technology holds for public sector and society is undermined,” Benji told TechMoran. “Government often believes “tech and innovation” is for private sector, and the bureaucracies of institutions are just not conducive for a start-up that needs agility, quick decision making and timely debtor payments.”

Benji adds that if they had the opportunity to assist Transnet for example with their road to rail strategy, a small investment into its tech could support a cargo shift, which will lower road maintenance burdens on the tax budget and validate Transnet’s expenditure on South Africa’s extensive rail network.

It’s rather sad that EmptyTrips had to travel to Dubai to engage with funding and investors, when its government should be supporting more strategically.

EmptyTrip’s target customers include corporates that have cargo to move (e.g. mines, farms, manufacturing, fertilizer etc), transport companies  and logistical service providers, procurement divisions of governments, aid organistions,  SME’s and Entrepreneurs trying to get their goods to market competitively and consumers to fulfil their transport requirements between countries.

EmptyTrips is free to sign-up, however, upon successful trip matching or bidding it charges a set service fee that is shared between the transporter and shipper. Everything is paid securely online with Payfast  It also offers cargo insurance online, where it earns a referral fee, this is underwritten by Hollard insurance. In future it plans on providing big data insights on global cargo movements, volumes and incidents. Ideally patterning with a tracking and telematics company.

Though security risks or loss involved in cargo transportation especially high value goods is an age-old problem, EmptyTrips shippers can opt-in to insure certain cargo types instantly upto R1,5m , underwritten by Hollard Insurance (strategic alliance). As it is for the cargo owner to insure is interest, this will protect them against fire, theft, hijack and overturning.

Secondly, the firm requires each transporter to complete a short questionnaire to calculate their “star rating”, where minimum acceptance criteria apply and verify the company details. Shippers are able to rate the transporter after a trip and a rule of “three strikes and you out” applies.
Lastly, it also aims to integrate automatic insurance claim history “checks” to a large insurance company database (this is under discussion).

Some of EmptyTrips competition include Freightos, Loadfox, Uber Freight, Freighthub but EmptyTrips is Africa’s first, and not only focuses on land transport, but also rail, air and sea. It’s technology algorithmic matching and smart positioning  with anonymous bidding assist transparency and reduces potential collusion or preferred user abuse.

Benji concurs that the logistics industry in Africa is very old and traditional, and the key challenge its expecting to face is that of educating people who have been in the industry for decades and to convince them that the technology will assist them with reducing space wastage.

Most people in this industry don’t even have an email address, and that’s a challenge on its’s own but he adds that the firm will remain committed as it has first-mover advantage and will keep on pioneering

As a start-up company EmptyTrips would like to align itself with competitions that offer it great exposure, network and support on a global scale. “Seedstars will open doors for us to be recognized as a tech company that is bringing about much needed change in the economy,” Benji told TechMoran. “We want to be seen as a local South African brand, that has taken the “world” by storm. Transporters recovering costs, shippers paying less, and the economy growing. We want to be seen as the star team that provides a simple solution to Move Africa for less, and Seedstars is providing that platform.”

LEAK: The upcoming iPhone 8 leaks in images and metallic molds, we have the pictures.

0

As is customary of every flagship smartphone release from a major manufacturer, leaks pop up as the launch date nears, today we have a juicy one involving the upcoming iPhone 8 and its two siblings.

The OLED front display; no fingerprint scanner cut-out

As we had mentioned a while back, the next iPhone release will be the 10th anniversary of the iconic smartphone, Apple is planning to mark the launch with a special iPhone 8 alongside the expected iPhone 7S  and the 7S Plus.

Glass rear cover hosts the vertical dual camera

The iPhone 8 will have an OLED edge to edge screen akin the  LG G6 as you can see on the image above. Now, according to the leaked metallic molds below, the device size will be in between the 4.7 inches of the iPhone 7S and the 5.5 inches of the 7S Plus. Given that the screen is edge to edge, Apple might be able to fit in a 5.2 inch display in those dimensions, but rumors are ranging from 5 inch to a whopping 5.8 inches like the Samsung Galaxy S8

Also, the molds reveal that the iPhone 8 will have a longer button on the side as confirmed by the previously leaked image, some argue that Apple will fit the fingerprint scanner at that location but that is unlikely. Most rumors claim that the scanner will be under the OLED display but apparently the company is having trouble implementing that;  the next obvious location would be on the rear, perhaps that’s why we have a hole in the back of the leaked molds. However, the picture of the iPhone 8 doesn’t have the scanner cut-out on neither the front nor the rear, strengthening the previous rumor of it being integrated under the display.

Camera-wise, the iPhone 8 will have a vertical dual camera as opposed to the horizontal setup of the iPhone 7S & 7S Plus. Those two latter phones will retain the same design language of the iPhones we currently have in the market as is the traditional of all ‘S’ iterations. The only difference will be a rear glass cover – instead of the metallic body we have on current iPhones – in order to enable wireless charging.

For those who are wondering, these metallic molds are made to assist  third party cover and cases manufacturers with the general body dimensions of upcoming phones. Now all we have to do is wait and maybe a live leak of the iPhone 8 will pop up soon and clear all the rumor conflicts.

Kenyan Startup Meta Capital Launches Automated Forex Trading system

A local financial technology firm Meta Capital has launched a three in one financial solution that that makes decisions and trades international currencies on behalf of clients while giving them direct access to competitive fixed deposit and transactional FX rates from local banks.

The Nairobi based Fintech has deployed MetaQuant, SharpFX and MetaFDR in one platform to help clients trade currencies globally, get the best foreign exchange quotes from local banks and fixed deposit rates respectively.

MetaQuant employs artificial intelligence to make decisions and trade for clients with limited time and skills to participate in online foreign exchange trading markets helping them to save hours spent on minute by minute poring over computer screens.

After hundreds of hours and months of coding, Moi University graduate of Business Management Mr Sila Obegi armed with accounting and programming skills says the new software has helped banks to increase their deposits and is linking traders to international markets.

Minimize costs

Mr Obegi who is also the managing director says the system help clients minimize costs and maximize returns.

Treasury cabinet secretary Henry Rotich last year said that there are thousands of Kenyan online traders who keenly follow and trade on the international financial markets. Unlike most of the platforms they use, MetaQuant trades on their behalf.

In transactional Foreign Exchange, the company’s platform SharpFX gives clients direct access to the best exchange rates from a panel of FX providers. It is accessible from all browsers with any computer or device making it easy and convenient to use.

With this platform, clients don’t need to move from bank to bank looking for better exchange rates, instead every time clients wish to transact, they simply go to SharpFX, compare real-time exchange rates from a panel of providers and choose to transact with a provider of their choice hence saving time and money on all their transactions.

Participating banks get to grow their FX volumes due to the direct link to the prospective clients and clients access the service for free. “We do not charge the clients any transaction fees or commissions, we simply give them access to the best exchange rates at no extra cost,” he said.

Best interest rates

In Fixed Deposit Receipts, MetaFDR gives clients direct access to the best interest rates from a panel of FDR providers. It is also accessible from all browsers with any computer or device making it easy and convenient to use.

By simply logging into MetaFDR clients are able to compare real-time interest rates from a panel of banks and choose to deal with one or several banks of their choice. This platform simply helps individuals, businesses and organizations with excess liquidity to create revenue from such liquidity while subsequently helping banks panel grow their deposits.

The connection between clients and banks on the platforms is direct and real-time hence making turnaround time for transacting as short as possible and Meta Capital is never a counter-party when dealing.

Mr Obegi says the company’s overarching goal is to build solutions that enhance efficiency and accessibility in financial markets while subsequently helping banks grow their deposits.

Freelancing has over the years grown in Nigeria, and across Africa. While some are dropping their 9-5 jobs to focus on a freelancing career, and providing services in the skills they possess, others take on freelance jobs alongside their full-time jobs. For SMEs who are on a tight budget, and seeking ways to cut cost, they turn to freelancers to help carry out some tasks.

The freelance market is what Hirefreehands wants to cater for. The platform is a freelance marketplace, where people can find and work with top quality, professional and affordable freelancers.

To ensure this aim is achieved, Hirefreehands has a Price Regulation Algorithm feature with pre-pay guarantee, which ensures that freelancers are always paid good value for their quality work, and also keeps prices affordable for the clients on the platform.

According to the founder, “We carefully verify all the freelancers we bring onboard, to verify that they indeed possess the skill they claim to have and in the event there are no “freehands” available, we have a set of supermen who are equipped to take on any possible task HFH promises to solve.

HFH ensures that clients and freelancers get what they signed up for without having to compromise on promise, quality or timeliness. As such, our platform is a level playing ground where everyone’s interest is protected”.

Because of the growth of freelancing, several platforms connecting businesses and freelancers has been launched, and with Hirefreehands joining the group, it’ll further promote the freelance culture in Nigeria.

Here Are Facebook’s Guidelines On Sex,Terrorism And Violence

0

Facebook’s power cannot be undermined in any part of the world. Pages, forums and ideas have been spread by the use of this social media site. It has 2 billion users that have to be moderated and governed by rules and guidelines to prevent issues such as violence, hate speech, terrorism, pornography, racism and even self-harm. The fact that Facebook grew too fast in such a short period of time meant that moderating it is already such a big challenge. They have had to get many moderators to be able manage the content that is shared out there.

One of the biggest challenges Facebook has faced has been the use of “revenge porn” this is basically the sharing of nude photos of someone to shame or embarrass them. While some posts are helpful when it comes to missing people, some simply promote violence and animal abuse. The Guardian published a small selection of slides from the moderation manuals that will shock you. In order to understand Facebook’s policies here are some of their guidelines.

Graphic violence 2

It is a thin line where Facebook moderators feel the need to keep us safe but at the same time create awareness about certain things that may be disturbing.  Facebook has consistently struggled to assess the news or “awareness” value of violent imagery. While the company recently faced harsh criticism for failing to remove videos of Robert Godwin being killed in the US and of a father killing his child in Thailand, the platform has also played an important role in disseminating videos of police killings and other government abuses.

#TakeControl : Make sure you are not billed from your airtime when your safaricom Data runs out by using My Data Manager

0

Many people have previously been complaining that Safaricom ‘steals’ their airtime when browsing. What they don’t know is that when your data bundle ends, the line uses your airtime to access the Internet. However, Safaricom has heard the cry and they recently unveiled the Swift Squad to give you tips on how to continue browsing, watching HD videos and even staying up to date on social media without running out of data too fast. My Data Manager is the final piece of the puzzle.
What is My Data Manager?

This is service that when activated makes sure they you will not be billed from your airtime once your Internet data bundle runs out. To activate it, you just need to go to *544# and look for the name ‘My Data Manager‘ on the menu and select it.
Some people prefer using their airtime to surf the Internet since the speeds are greater but with the introduction of 4G in Kenya, bundles too are really fast.

Once you activate My Data Manager, you will get a message immediately your data balance hits 2MB. If you continue browsing after this alert, you will be notified when your bundle is over. A menu will pop the up on the screen to let you purchase another bundle through various ways such as buying with bonga points, okoa bundles among others.

It is important to note that your Internet will go off at this moment and any remaining airtime you have in your line will not be consumed whatsoever.

You can choose to buy another bundle with this airtime – it will be displayed to you immediately the data bundle ends – or you can top up to buy a bigger bundle. Whatever you choose you can rest assured that your browsing will not consume your airtime when the bundle runs out.

Now Kenyans can plan their Internet budget efficiency without the nasty surprises of airtime ‘disappearances’. Go to *544# and activate ‘My Data Manager’.

0

Sometimes, the need to go beyond our phone book arises. Whether it’s getting the contact of old friends we’ve lost contact with, corporate organisations or home service repair men. With the platform, businesses also enjoy a great benefit, as it helps to enhance their visibility.

HollaNow was officially launched on February 5, 2017 by Okonkwo Ikenna, alongside his team Chidi Stanley (Technical Director), Iheruome Michael (Technical Director).

According to the team, over 100 organisation’s contact details have been registered so far. There are also plans to include emergency/ambulance services, government agencies and all important contact details that Nigerians need on their phone book.

Although, HollaNow might have competitors strong competitors, including Truecaller, the founder believes that his previous experience in starting up several unsuccessful companies will be an edge in his play market. Well, experience might probably work for team HollaNow, but constant innovations would work better at helping to stand them out.

Regal Flowers Launches to Allow Users Order Fresh Flowers for Their Loved Ones

0

In other cultures, purchasing flowers for loved ones is quite normal, and for many, those flowers are what they look forward to during valentine’s day celebration. But in a country like Nigeria, it’s uncommon to find love birds exchanging flowers, and this culture is probably what Olatam Oladitan wants to bring alive when he launched Regal Flowers in June 2016.

Regal Flowers is an eCommerce platform that enables Nigerians purchase fresh, beautiful flowers for the one that’s dear to their hearts.

According to the founder, he got the idea for Regal Flowers after he struggled to find a satisfactory place to order flowers online for his girlfriend (after a supposed break-up). In his words, “everyone has someone they care about.”

Asides flowers for romantic purpose, the platform also lists bridal bouquets, funeral wreaths and other gift items, including cakes and chocolates. It currently delivers to only Lagos, with plans to expand soon.

While the idea of an online flower delivery service might sound fascinating, the viability of the venture in a county like Nigeria is something to worry about. But with enough marketing, Regal Flowers might just be able to bring alive the culture of gifting flowers in Nigeria.

There’s quite a large number of job boards in Nigeria, helping job seekers ease their job search process. On each of these sites are vacancies for different professions, and we’re yet to find one dedicated to a single profession.

But if you’re in the teaching field, you don’t need to keep going from page to page in search of a job role that fits your career. You can now use Xpressteachers.

Launched by Vivian Paseda on the 1st of April 2016, Xpressteachers is a job posting board solely dedicated to the recruitment of educational personnel.

The platform allows educational establishments to place their vacancies for free, while jobseekers who find a vacancy matching their search criteria can also apply directly to the organisation.

The platform also has a CV database, where educational professionals seeking employment post their CVs, and in the same vein, registered employers can browse through the CV database and make direct contact with candidates that match their vacancy criteria.

For Xpressteachers, the goal is to streamline the recruitment process, thus reducing the stress, time and cost associated with recruiting quality candidates.

Being a niche focused job board, Xpressteachers is not only making job search easier for educational professionals, but also easing the recruitment process for employers, given the fact that they can search through a database, rather than posting a vacancy and receiving hundreds of CVs that they might not even be satisfied.

Theoffering of Xpressteachers is highly commendable, and we can’t wait to see how it scales.
