Young Nigerian Launches “WhiteSpaces” to Help Bring Affordable Internet to Rural Communities

0

10463894_1402920813330409_4734806039011709037_nIn a move expected to deliver affordable and high speed internet to millions of unserved and underserved Nigerians, WhiteSpaces has launched in private beta with 250 beta users with focus on low end users and rural areas using TV WhiteSpaces technology.

According to founder Mark Afolabi, ” Internet access is a really big deal, with the 6-7% broadband penetration in Nigeria the Internet and the Web have transformed our lives and the way we live. Looking forward, we are seeing even more exciting developments and opportunities that will provide more benefits to more people in more places. We want to bring this opportunity to the unserved and underserved people. They’re going to use it to decide what kind of government they want, get access to quality and affordable health care for the first time ever, experience Education in a new dimension.”

TV white spaces are unused gaps between TV channels in the UHF spectrum. Since fewer TV stations broadcast in rural areas, TV white-space technology is a highly effective choice for rural communities, especially because UHF signal can penetrate foliage and works well in difficult terrain. White space is also a viable option for more densely-populated areas, as urban demonstrations have shown and can be powered with solar. Microsoft 4Afrika and Google have piloted similar services in Kenya,  South Africa and  Ghana and now the startup says it wants use the same technology to bring high speed access to Nigeria.

“One of the huge areas we are innovating on is affordable and reliable internet access for education,” said Social architect Seunfunmi Akinola.”WhiteSpaces will bridge the gap in the quality of online education and access and give kids and youth in underserved communities new opportunities to learn and acquire the skills that are essential to succeed in modern society regardless of their backgrounds”

WhiteSpacesh has a free plan that allocates free monthly data to users on a monthly basis, this data would be capped, and allows upgrade for paid plans, while affordable paid plans will provide unlimited data to user for between N1,500 to N2,000 monthly.

Segun Fagbami adds that the private beta will allow the firm to deploy high speed internet starting with Iworoko community in Ekiti State Nigeria.

“This community has a university, public primary schools and a clinic established there, further understand community needs and tailor local contents and opportunities to users and also encourage regulatory bodies to accelerate regulations and policies that will enable WhiteSpaces on the promise of universal access,” Fagbami said.

WhiteSpaces competitors include existing ISP’s and data providers. WhiteSpaces aims to differentiates itself in the market on ease of use, affordability and reliability.

In South Africa, Alan Knott-Craig’s Project Isizwe aims to provide free Wi-Fi to low income communities in South Africa.

Security fears: LED light bulbs can leak passwords

0

Context Information Security, a UK-based security company, has revealed that LED light bulbs can leak Wi-Fi passwords to hackers. The company, in a statement, revealed that it managed to hack into Wi-Fi-enabled LIFX light bulb and remotely control the lights.Wi-Fi enabled LED light bulbs

The LIFX light bulb has network connectivity that allows it to be switched off and on using smartphones.

Research director at Context Information Security, Michael Jordon, explained to BBC how he was able to get the Wi-Fi password and username of a household that had installed the light bulb.

Jordon said that they purchased some bulbs and investigated how they communicated with each other. They found password and username among the message content exchanged.

He added that two experts took two weeks to crack the system using readily accessible and inexpensive equipment. They managed to steal the wireless network credentials by posing as a new bulb that sought to join the network. This allowed them to control the lights.

The light bulb obtains commands from the smartphone applications and transmits them to every bulb over a wireless mesh network.

LIFX, the firm behind the bulbs, has since updated its software after being notified of the vulnerability. The LIFX project began on Kickstarter, a crowd-funding website. Publicizing itself as the “light bulb reinvented”, the company made more than 13 times its original funding target.

LIFX stated that there was a possible security problem with the distribution of network configuration details on the mesh radio. However, no LIFX consumers have been affected.

“We recommend that all users need to stay updated with the most recent app and firmware updates,” LIFX said.

Everyday, objects are increasingly being connected to the network, a process called the ‘internet of things’. The possibility of a number of objects being hacked is set to increase exponentially, said research firm Gartner.

While laptops and phones have had a longer duration to correct security problems, these new devices have not learnt from the previous mistakes and are therefore easy gateways into hacking.

Brian McGuigan, Silver Spring Networks commercial director, stated that security issue was not limited to home devices as most furniture in cities are also connected to the network.

Silver Spring Networks provides networks for smart lighting and smart cities

The users in cities have minimal understanding of security so producers should be encouraged to leverage the security standards that have been utilized widely in other industries, McGuigan further noted. Cities are using the ‘internet of things’ to act as a building block though most companies providing new products are start-ups and under pressure to market their products fast, he noted.

EasiPol Powering Payment of Over 2M Insurance Policies Across Southern Africa

bigstock-Insurance-7091014Unlike in European markets, 90% of retail payments in Africa are via cash, with only 10% of payments made electronically.
Though South Africa is moving fast into a cash-less economy, it still has an estimated 67% of the adult population unbanked, and 37% live in rural areas.
Giving the unbanked access to formal financial services such as insurance policies has its benefits to individuals: improved well-being, financial responsibilities taken care of, and a personal sense of worth for the heads of the home. But, considering the percentage of citizens who are unbanked and/or in rural areas there is the treat of: theft of collections, fraud, inaccurate reporting, and poor customer service during emotional times.
Enter EasiPol,  designed by software consultancy RubiBlue is a secure and simple collection of cash payments fully customisable for administrators and insurance underwriters.  EasiPol manages two million policies across southern Africa, collecting around R85 million per month in payments, of which R50 million is in cash. EasiPol also allows payment for those banked via debit order, stop order and EasyPay. Apart from collection of policy payments for insurers, EasiPol can also be applied within any subscriber/membership organization with collection models: political parties, unions, taxi associations, societies etc.
According to RubiBlue MD Chris Ogden: “Having discussed the pitfalls of cash collections with many organisations, one business mentioned it ‘lost’ monies of up to R750,000 a month. It only discovered this after the installation of EasiPol. Being a web-based system, it allows convenient on-demand access from any web browser, including mobile devices. As well as the collection and recording of payments there is a policy document repository feature and is compliant to. “

In addition to increasing collections from an operational perspective it improves the management of day-to-day tasks because of accurate and up to date data, and its in-depth audit trailing to manage and prevent fraud and theft, EasiPol aims to make sales and collections in the field are made using a remote terminal for payments, data look-ups and receipting for transparent and accurate reporting. Organisations using EasiPol have reported an increase in collections and reported better client satisfaction.

The software also provides a complete multi-platform policy administration/payment solution, ensuring a secure, centralised, backed up data store, which prevents fraud and theft; ensuring administrator and client peace of mind.

Kenya’s PangaSafari Wants to Help New Travelers Locate their Destinations

0

img4Formerly Matatuonline,  Kenya’s ‘Panga Safari’ aims to make public transport easy by availing information to people in a move to enlighten as well as equipping them with tools to pre-plan their journeys.

Developed by David Kanyari in 2010 as an MSC thesis, Panga Safari-Swahili for plan for your journey, the site aims to help travelers who get lost due to lack of prior information on how to get from point A to B.

“The Panga Safari story was inspired by a commuter in a matatu who wanted to know what bus she could transfer to to her destination. She wondered if every time she travels she would have to ask a passerby for this information. Well, that gave birth to PangaSafari.” Kanyiri says. ” I have been lost so many times just like many of us. Ithought hHow about solving this by technology?”

Now with about 1000 users monthly, Panga Safari plans to extend the initiative to the counties and other town centers around the country to help users reach their destinations. The site is setting up all major bus stops, matatus plying that route and a list of bus stops or stations from the departure point to the destination given and the route is plotted in real time to all major estates and suburbs with a visualized map.

“Our mission is to provide relevant and up to date information on mobility, directions, fares etc thus empowering you with information. This information includes bus information, distances, route description, estimated time taken and minimum fares where applicable,” Kanyari says.
The prospective PhD Computer Science student says a user queries for a matatu by keying in both origin and destination. The response is   information about the matatu number to take, the distance to be covered and a map or a schematic diagram (and a narration) of the transit is also included. Origins and destinations could be bus stops, place names, building name, facilities, institutions among others.

The site has now covered Nairobi CBD to Kiserian, Ngong,  Kiambu, Dagoretti, Limuru,  Gatundu, Nazareth, Banana, Ruai, Utawala, Thika, Kiganjo, Gatundu, Mwihoko, Gikambura,Gachie, Wangige, Kitengela and several other suburbs.

The public can also register to add data to PangaSafari such as buildings, bus stops or matatu numbers. Kanyiri says he is in the process of integrating fares into the system so users don’t have to ask how much their journey takes.

PangaSafari says it will make money from adverts, minimal charge SMS /USSD platform per inquiry or in-app ads on its yet to be launched Android app.

Unlike similar apps in Nairobi providing information on traffic jams and accidents, Pangasafari aims to focus on the new road user in town and long distance travelers who need to know where the bus terminus is, which matatu route they are supposed to take and how long the journey will be at a certain average speed. Kanyiri and his other professional  colleagues have  founded  Techscope Africa – a GIS  &IT  solutions  company   that deals  with  consultancies in map servers, resource mapping, IT solutions development ,web & mobile Applications development and  training in GIS.

Remote-controlled contraceptives set for release soon

0

A Massachusetts-based company called MicroCHIPS may launch a remote-controlled chip into the market by 2018. The chip will be implanted underneath the skin of women.remote-controlled contraceptive microchip

According to MicroCHIPS, the device promotes safe, long-term and effective birth control. The implication of the technology goes beyond contraceptives.  In case a couple wishes to conceive, the woman can turn off the chip using a remote control. She can also turn it on again when she needs to.

The chip is designed to last for up to 16 years – almost half of a woman’s reproductive lifespan. Each day, it releases a dose of 30 milligrams of levonorgestrel used in many emergency and hormonal contraceptives.

Inside the chip, a reservoir array protects and contains the hormone. Inside these reservoirs, any drug can be deposited and set for release based on a pre-programmed schedule or on demand.

According to MicroCHIPS, the arrays are designed to be compatible to the wireless telemetry, sensor feedback loops, or pre-programmed microprocessors to offer active control. Individual device reservoirs can be opened on a predetermined schedule or on demand using control sensor activation.

The chip discharges the contents of the reservoir when an instant electric current from a small internal battery is passed via the hermetic platinum and titanium seal, which melts it and releases the dose in the body.

The chips have undergone human clinical trial delivering osteoporosis medication over a one-month schedule to post-menopausal women. This demonstrates that the new technology functions. The device was implanted with a local anaesthetic and the process took 30 minutes. It causes no adverse immune reaction.

MicroCHIPS stated that there are still additional logistics they need to work on such as encrypting the chips to maintain wireless data secure though the concept has been proven to function as desired.

Currently, as part of the Bill & Miranda Gates Foundation Family Planning program, MicroCHIPS, which is led by Robert Langer, is adapting the chip for contraceptives and hopes to have FDA approval by 2015. MicroCHIPS hope to retail the product by 2018.

Inbox Wants to be the Next-generation Email Service

1

inboxA new email platform dubbed Inbox has emerged from stealth, with an open-source engine to unify the world of email, including enterprise complete with a developer API and cloud service for building next-generation email apps.

Co-founded by Dropbox and MIT alums, Inbox platform works with Gmail, Yahoo, Microsoft Exchange, and others, and provides a single modern API for both consumer and enterprise email accounts.  The co-founders say the Inbox platform unifies more than 30 years of complex email standards and formats, allowing new apps to be created faster and with fewer bugs.

“Email is the database of your life. It’s the digital home for your conversations, memories, and identity,” said cofounder and CEO, Michael Grinich. “But for developers, working with email is incredibly difficult, and requires learning archaic protocols and formats. The Inbox API solves that, and lets you focus on building your app.”

Grinich, an ex-Dropbox engineer and designer at Nest, cofounded Inbox last year with Christine Spang, another MIT alum who was an early Linux kernel engineer at Ksplice (acquired by Oracle).

“Storing the world’s email data for secure and fast access is a monumental task,” said Spang. “We’re solving this from the ground up.”

The Inbox API provides simple REST endpoints for accessing, modifying, and sending mail, and is compatible with existing providers like Gmail and Yahoo Mail. Enterprise support for Microsoft Exchange means the platform is also compatible with more than 300 million estimated email accounts used by businesses worldwide.

The Inbox sync engine is open source, and currently works with Gmail and Yahoo Mail, soon expanding to all IMAP providers. Enterprise users on Microsoft Exchange may request access to the Inbox Developer Program, which supports ActiveSync and is currently in private beta.

The San Francisco-based firm received seed funding from top-tier investors, including Fuel Capital, SV Angel, CrunchFund, Data Collective, Betaworks, and others.

M-BEBA Set to Join Kenya’s Taxi Hailing Community

0
home-hero-10-1440-900Every now and then we come across several developers buiding awesome apps for use by the local community and we get fascinated even when we clearly know some of those apps will never see the light of day.
However, anyone building a taxi hailing app needs to be listened to, not because they won’t beat Uber, EasyTaxi Kenya, MaraMoja or SasaCabs or PataCabs, Pewin Cabs or Teksi254 and SayTaxi plus several others but because we think culture plays a huge role in user acquisition in this market.
M-BEBA is a new application being developed as a car sharing serviceand as well a taxi hailing app. M-BEBA aims to allow riders to request a safe, affordable ride with the touch of a button. It also aims to allow drivers to make extra cash by giving registered M-BEBA users a ride on request.
M-BEBA users turn to the app to hail cabs or carpool vehicles from their friends or registered users. After searching on the platform and selecting a nearby ride, the user can wait for the driver to arrive as they track them. M-BEBA promises seamless payments via M-Pesa, Credit Cards or PayPal account. We are not yet sure about cash now, but will confirm.
Still under development for both Android and iOS, M-BEBA is a venture by Levi Benjamin Mointeor, of Twogether International, a Non-profit Organization registered in Texas, USA. Mointeor, a Kenyan attended Navarro College and University of Texas in Arlington and says has run a number of companies. Gaining ground in Kenya’s taxi hailing industry might not be so easy though.
TechMoran has talked to over ten taxi hailing companies. Two of which have shut or are inactive, while others are at launch phase and others in stealth. It will be interesting to see how Uber, EasyTaxi, SasaCabs, Maramoja Transport among others take it on. The market is huge, the city transport system needs to be fixed but we think it won’t be by M-BEBA.

Novartis launches malaria formulation Coartem 80/480

0

Novartis has launched a new antimalarial formulation of Coartem® 80/480 (artemether/lumefantrine 80 mg/480 mg), for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria in adults and older children, designed to reduce number of tablets taken per dose.

Created in a bid to enhance patient compliance, the full course of treatment for malaria has been reduced from 24 tablets to six tablets translating into a 75% reduction in pill burden.

Kenya is the third African country to get the new brand after Nigeria and Angola, others are Uganda and Ghana.

According to Dr. Nathan Mulure, the Novartis Medical Manager for Africa, Malaria is highly preventable and curable, yet it is still one of the most deadly diseases in developing countries.

“Novartis reaffirms its strong commitment to the fight against malaria. This achievement is a truly remarkable milestone contributing to treating many patients and help in the reduction of disease burden. The fewer tablets offer a convenient solution for busy lives.

“The launch of Coartem® 80/480 in Kenya marks another milestone in the fight against Malaria, and will benefit patients with a convenient and high quality treatment for malaria,” he said. The Coartem 80/480 was first registered in Switzerland by a stringent health authority, the Swiss Medic.

Novartis pioneered the launch of a fixed-dose ACT, and ten years later, in 2009, the first dispersible ACT was tailored to meet the needs of children who are the most vulnerable to malaria.

“Through a partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001, we were the first company in the healthcare industry to commit to the supply of antimalarial treatments to the public sector in endemic countries without profit”, added Dr Nathan Mulure. Since 2006, Kenya has received over 75 million treatments of Coartem. Kenya is thus one of the largest recipients of Coartem.

Each year there are more than one million malaria-related deaths around the world. Nine out of ten malaria deaths occur in sub Saharan Africa, and the vast majority of malaria-related deaths occur in children. In Africa alone, a child dies every 60 seconds from malaria.

CORTEXAs part of its ongoing commitment to patients and health workers, Novartis also provides malaria case management educational programs, which include hands-on training for local healthcare workers, customized training manuals, and user-friendly packaging to ensure that Coartem and Coartem Dispersible are properly used and to improve patient compliance.

Systems of Things: The building blocks for the next internet revolution

0

internet-things-mitigating-risk-showcase_image-10-p-1647By Pfungwa Serima, CEO of SAP Africa

The promise of the connected world we live in is an alluring one. Someday, we will be healthier because our doctors will have access to all the data they need about our health. Our vehicles and appliances will monitor themselves and will let us know when it is time to service them. We will never have to make a decision without the data we need to make smart decisions.

Thanks to the so-called Internet of Things, that day is coming sooner than you think. We all know there are more connected devices then people in the world today. By 2020, it is estimated there will be 50 billion connected devices globally. However, businesses and society will not benefit from connected devices if there are no systems in place to gather, analyse and gain insights from the massive volumes of data generated by these connected devices.

Let’s take a step back here. We spent last half of the 20th Century building what Geoffrey Moore calls Systems of Record – the structured transactional data that is the core of every business. These Systems of Record capture every dimension of our lives, be it financial transactions, human resources, order processing, inventory management, customer relationship management, supply chain management, product lifecycle management or more. These Systems of Record have paved the way for enormous economic expansion over the last 50 years.

With the explosion of the Internet in the last few years, Enterprise IT saw a shift towards Systems of Engagement, encompassing the edge of the business, leveraging social networks, and processing loosely structured data that is constantly changing. This shift towards Systems of Engagement resulted in more agile business processes, seizing new business opportunities at the edge of the business.

These systems depend on gathering and analysing large volumes of data from various sources in real-time to generate actionable insights for fast decision-making. For instance, a clothing retailer can now offer highly personalised real-time discount offers to online shoppers after analysing their shopping behavior, social media sentiment, likes and dislikes.

Today, we are witnessing another massive revolution where enterprises will need to build Systems of Things in parallel to Systems of Engagement to harness the Internet of Things. As the previously dumb devices on the edge become intelligent and get connected, Systems of Things will be needed to source, capture, analyse, predict and act on the data in real time.

A recent report by Morgan Stanley predicts that the Internet of Things could be an opportunity for several large industries, driving potential changes in business models and significant cost savings.

What does this mean for us in Africa? I believe it’s a great opportunity for us not only to create entire new business models for companies, moving the value proposition from products to services, but to use technology to make a real impact at socio-economic level.

In the utility sector, Africa’s utility companies need to meet the growing demands of urbanising populations and booming industrial sectors. IoT can help with smart metering and distribution, to be able to accurately measure and predict demand and generation. In agriculture, we could be using IoT technologies to improve yields. In healthcare, there’s a real opportunity to use IoT to use our human capital more effectively, and deliver better services. In the capital goods sector, we could be streamlining industrial processes and helping marginal mining operations do more with less.

What do African companies need to do to take advantage of this? For the Internet of Things, and billions of connected devices, to become useful, we need Systems of Things – and luckily, the foundational blocks of this are the same as those of Systems of Engagement and Systems of Records: big data, fast data, predictive analytics, cloud, and mobile. If African companies get these building blocks right, and are able to embed their Internet of Things applications directly into their existing business processes, they will be able to chart their own destiny.

Government, Mobile Operators Collaboration to Resolve Nigeria’s Service Conundrum

0

MobilePhonesAfricaThe Nigerian government and mobile operators need to come together to stem the unacceptable levels of service quality that continue to plague the industry a study by global research and advisory services firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has revealed.

as it weighs up the Nigeria Communication Commission’s latest strategy for bringing offending operators into line and assesses the deeper issues involved in achieving true quality of service .

Nigeria’s mobile market has grown to 120 million users today from just 400,000 lines in 2001 with mobile phone penetration reaching 87% of the population. Despite this phenomenal growth, poor QoS remains the bane of the Nigerian telecommunications industry, with all four mobile network operators falling foul of the regulator at various times over the years.

In February this year Airtel, Globacom, and MTN were handed month-long bans from selling SIM cards and suspended from engaging in any promotional activity until their QoS levels reached the required standards. But will such stringent measures finally have the desired effect?

“Banning sales of SIM cards is a new hammer for the regulatory body, and one it has introduced in an attempt to compel operators to comply with its stated QoS standards,” says Oluwole Babatope a telecommunications and networking research analyst with IDC West Africa. “Fines and limitations on marketing activities were the traditional sanctions of choice for the NCC, so this latest action marks a significant shift in thinking. However, IDC believes the ban on selling SIM cards will likely be as ineffective as the previous tactics because there is much more to enabling effective QoS than mere input or effort from the operator side.”

Granted, telecoms in the country have to deal with acquisition of land, government taxes, informal levies from various ‘community youth organizations’, and the high cost of generating power in addition to investing large amounts into their networks, but such efforts have often been ineffective due to the lack of infrastructure in the country, which is a key reason why the quality of the mobile services they provide has remained so poor.

Security is another factor, with numerous reports over the last two years of widespread and persistent vandalism of fiber cables, theft of diesel generators from cell sites, and destruction of fiber cables destruction during road construction.

The way forward is for the government to protect rather than persecute this sector of the economy.

“The telecommunications vertical in Nigeria has consistently increased its contribution to GDP over recent years, rising from about 2% in 2006 to 8% in 2013,” says Babatope. “As such, it is in the government’s interests to create and implement policies that provide an enabling environment for communication service providers. Indeed, laws should be established that protect telecommunications infrastructure and prosecute the vandals and individuals who sabotage telecom operations in the country.”

None of this absolves the operators of all responsibility, however. “IDC is also of the opinion that operators must invest more in hybrid power solutions,” continues Babatope. “After all, it is common knowledge that the supply of public electricity is unreliable and will likely remain a significant challenge for some time to come. Operators should therefore be proactive in seeking out cost-effective alternatives for power generation. Hybrid power solutions, which combine renewable and non-renewable energy sources, should help reduce operational expenditure on networks, thereby enabling the operators to invest more in their networks across the country and ultimately improve the customer experience.”

Hyperlocal Neighbourhood Network OurHood Piloted in Green Point

OurHood_ScreenshotYesterday, we told you about OurHood, a new mobile and web tool designed to make it easy for people from a specific neighbourhood or suburb to connect and share information privately.

Today, OurHood has launched in Green Point as a pilot project for Cape Town. Part social network, part hyperlocal news service, part civic engagement enabler, a crime and infrastructure problem reporting tool, and a place where people can get special local deals or connect to borrow or trade goods.

The Green Point City Improvement District is one of the first areas to adopt the technology, and where residents can use the online platform. Residents and business owners were immediately on board when co-founder Bruce Good introduced their new project at the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof City Improvement Districts’ annual general meetings at the end of 2013. Since then the site has gone live in Green Point, with the Oranje-Kloof CID area to follow soon.

“We started a soft launch in late May and are very pleased with the way the site is working – and to get such positive feedback from residents. We hope that OurHood will provide the platform to link neighbours digitally and build stronger neighbourhoods throughout SA.”

Communication that typically would occur through media not designed for community interaction – such as  Facebook, WhatsApp groups, Neighbourhood Watch sites, Rate Payers sites and other community websites can how happen through one mobile-friendly and free platform – www.ourhood.co.za.

Says Good: “Trust has been identified as the big key to success. People need to feel safe to discuss concerns such as suspicious activity noticed in the area or that they are looking for a house sitter without tipping off criminals, which can happen if these kinds of details are shared on open platforms.”

Says Marc Truss, Chief Executive of the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof City Improvement Districts, “We are essentially a community service. While providing top up services in terms of security, cleansing and the general improvement of the area, community interaction is an imperative element of our ethos.  We are therefore very proud to be the first City Improvement District to be involved with the roll-out of OurHood in Cape Town and South Africa.”

OurHood works across all digital devices – from mobile phones to laptops and tablets. It will effectively provide a series of notice boards, one of which links Green Point members to the GPCID. Residents can also use it to:

  • Report any criminal activity
  • Buy, sell or lend things
  • Allow members to advise on the best plumber, electrician or doctor, and other services in the neighbourhood
  • Communicate with the ward councillor, report problems such as a faulty street light to the local authorities
  • Share lifts, advertise events and organize activities
  • Take advantage of unique deals available to their neighbourhood only

In addition to the GPCID portal, OurHood provides contact details for the local councillor and an easy way to report particular Hood issues – such as a pothole, or a faulty street light.

Good confirms that OurHood will remain free to users. Local advertisements and deal vouchers will be the primary source of revenue for this platform and the developers are confident that by laser targeting sales it will be possible to both make money and encourage people to use local shops.

Good says that they plan to roll out OurHood in major South African cities over the next year. They have already signed up agents in Johannesburg and Durban to start spreading the word, and the Cape Town pilot projects and feedback they are receiving from the first participants are invaluable.

Concludes Truss: “With the introduction of free Wi-Fi at St Andrew’s Square and another project due to roll out in the next few months, we are increasingly involved in finding technological solutions to community needs. With Cape Town’s recognition of the importance of the provision of bandwidth to the general public, we are in alignment with this focus on empowering residents and businesses alike to build communities and businesses.”

To sign up for OurHood, simply log on to the site at www.ourhood.co.za and sign up using your physical address. You will then be given a unique code that will give you access to the group you qualify to join, once your address has been verified.

High court orders against Unilever chief arrest

0

AROMATUnilever Kenya Chief Executive Officer Yaw Nsarkoh will not be arrested following the  High Court issuance of orders against the same for the alleged inclusion of genetically modified (GM) ingredients in the popular Aromat food seasoning.

According to the Business Daily, Nsarkoh through his lawyer, Martin Munyu that Aromat which is alleged to have genetically modified ingredients has in fact met the requirements set by the Standards Act of the Constitution, and is duly certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

In his argument, Munyu added that despite the Kenyan Government banning products that contain GMOs in 2012, the absence of a law the ban threatens to infringe on the rights of importers.

“The NBA recently began issuing media notices, and on July 4 issued a seizure against Unilever’s Aromat product with the effect of disparaging it as being unsafe for consumption in Kenya. Unilever has suffered from loss of consumer confidence owing to incorrect depiction of the product,” said Mr Munyu.

In his ruling Justice Isaac Lanaola also stopped the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) from withdrawing Aromat from the market until July 16, when the matter comes up for hearing.

The labeling on the seasoning indicates that its ingredients include salt and maze flour, which contain GM material.

Makueni M Member of Parliament Daniel Maanzo is the one who told the Parliamentary Committee for Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives that Aromat has genetically modified ingredients.

Dell, Intel, Samsung Launch Open Interconnect Consortium to Advance Interoperability for Internet of Things

0

internet-things-mitigating-risk-showcase_image-10-p-1647Technology heavyweights Atmel Corporation, Broadcom Corporation, Dell, Intel Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., and Wind River, have joined forces to launch the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), a body that will shape the connectivity requirements for the billions of devices that will make up the Internet of Things (IoT).

According to Glen Robson, vice president and CTO for Client Solutions at Dell, “The explosion of the Internet of Things is a transformation that will have a major impact on our power to do more through technology. Having a connectivity framework that is open, secure and manageable is critical to delivering the foundational elements of that transformation.”

Robson added,“Consumers and businesses alike will need a strong base upon which to build the vast array of solutions enabled by a global Internet of Things. From our earliest days, Dell has embraced industry standards as a means to bring the best technology solutions to our customers, and the Open Interconnect Consortium is very much aligned with this model.”

OIC is focused on defining a common communications framework based on industry standard technologies to wirelessly connect and intelligently manage the flow of information among personal computing and emerging IoT devices, regardless of form factor, operating system or service provider.

The partners will contribute software and capacity to develop a protocol specification, open source implementation, and a certification program, all with a view of accelerating the development of the IoT. The OIC specification will encompass a range of connectivity solutions, utilizing existing and emerging wireless standards and will be designed to be compatible with a variety of operating systems.

Leaders from a broad range of industry vertical segments – from smart home and office solutions to automotive and more – will participate in the program. This will help ensure that OIC specifications and open source implementations will help companies design products that intelligently, reliably and securely manage and exchange information under changing conditions, power and bandwidth, and even without an Internet connection.

The first OIC open source code will target the specific requirements of smart home and office solutions. For example, the specifications could make it simple to remotely control and receive notifications from smart home appliances or enterprise devices using securely provisioned smartphones, tablets or PCs.

International Data Corporation expects the installed base of the Internet of Things will be approximately 212 billion “things” globally by the end of 2020. This is expected to include 30.1 billion installed “connected (autonomous) things” in 2020.

Doug Fisher, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the Software and Services Group said,“The rise and ultimate success of the Internet of Things depends on the ability for devices and systems to securely and reliably interconnect and share information,” . “This requires common frameworks, based on truly open, industry standards. Our goal in founding this new consortium is to solve the challenge of interoperable connectivity for the Internet of Things without tying the ecosystem to one company’s solution.”

Possible consumer solutions include the ability to remotely control household systems to save money and conserve energy. In the enterprise, employees and visiting suppliers might securely collaborate while interacting with screens and other devices in a meeting room. Specifications for additional IoT opportunities including automotive, healthcare and industrial are expected to follow.

“Open source is about collaboration and about choice. The Open Interconnect Consortium is yet another proof point how open source helps to fuel innovation,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of The Linux Foundation. “We look forward to the OIC’s contribution in fostering an open environment to support the billions of connected devices coming online.”

Additional member companies including other leading appliance and device manufacturers, service and solution providers, chipset manufacturers and more are expected to join OIC in the coming months.

“In the Internet of Things era, everything – from PCs, smartphones and tablets to home and industrial appliances and new wearable form factors – should effortlessly connect and communicate with each other, regardless of who makes the device,” said Jong-deok Choi, executive vice president and deputy head of Software R&D Center at Samsung Electronics. “We invite other industry leaders, whatever their background and vertical specialism, to join us in defining and embracing a common communications framework for the Internet of Things.”

Mobile Banking Users to Exceed 1.75 Billion by 2019

0

MobilePhonesAfricaA new report dubbed Mobile & Online Banking: Developed & Developing Market Strategies 2014-2019 from Juniper Research, a research and analytical services firm for the global hi-tech communications sector, providing consultancy, analyst reports and industry commentary reports that by the end of 2019, over 1.75 billion mobile phone users will have used their devices for banking purposes compared to 800 million this year.

According to the report mobile banking technology is currently available in most regions of the world, driven by exceptional consumer demand, especially in the developed regions. Providers such as the Bank of America have already announced, back in 2013, that more of their customers are logging in to their mobile services than through their online system.

The report also notes that emerging countries such as China, India and Bangladesh also witnessed significant growth in the past 12 months.

“The level of maturity in number and innovation of services being offered in the market across several geographical areas, demonstrates that banks now regard the mobile channel as an indispensable revenue-stream. However, with the mobile channel becoming a key customer retention strategy, it presents a great challenge to traditional institutions”, report author Nitin Bhas added.

The scale of this challenge has been confirmed by the decreasing number of branch visits by consumers and also the closure of physical bank branches over the past 12-24 months. For example, in April 2014, RBS UK closed its 44 branches across the country.

The report also notes that nearly 100% of the banks analysed had some sort of mobile (SMS, Browser and App based) and online banking offering, with almost every bank having apps available for at least 1 smartphone OS. Banking apps are ranked highly amongst the most downloaded financial apps in different app stores, with banks reporting high number of average logins per month per user.

The whitepaper, ‘Digital Banking ~ Mobile and Beyond’ is available to download from the Juniper website together with further details of the full report and Interactive Forecast Excel (IFxl).
