Zambia’s rural To get More Towers To Enhance Network Service

The government of Zambia is planning on spending $24 million in deploying more mobile phone towers in the rural areas in order to enhance coverage where there are no network services.

Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) will take charge of tis project and will ensure that there are 169 new telecoms towers in operation.

This project should be done by the end of this year and will see mobile phone coverage expanded to more than 200,000 people who are not being served by mobile networks.

The towers will be let out to the mobile networks, who then provide the service direct to customers.

It’s estimated that around 5 million people living in rural areas currently lack access to mobile phone coverage.

LG Will Be Launching Its L Series In The Mobile World Congress

LG will be launching the third generation of its L series Smartphone’s in this year’s Mobile World Congress MWC.

Well, all that there is to know for now about the L series is that they will come with Android KitKat (4.4), they rest of the specs will be revealed in the launch.

Tanzania Blazes With Innovation To Boost Export Trade

A new online system has been launched to improve the efficiency and reduce time taken to apply for Certificates of Origin (CoO) to facilitate export trade.

The Tanzania Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA) said that the system will enable the exporters/clearing and forwarding agents to process CoO electronically using PCs or mobile devices. This project has been supported by Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA).

Trade facilitation calls for rationalization and reduction in the number of documents needed for international trade and to introduce electronic online processes. This will reduce the time it takes to physically move between different offices collecting documents and to obtain necessary approvals.

Executive Director at TCCIA, Daniel Machemba, said “The launch of the electronic certificate of origin is a boost to Tanzanian businesses and will spur export trade. The time and costs savings will encourage businesses to seek other markets for their export. This is a new system, a first of its kind in East Africa, which shows that Tanzania private sector is ready to do business. The private sector is an important partner to the government, and by developing such systems that can spur trade, we feel we are contributing to the expanded trade in Tanzania”

Data available from this system shows that concerns related to CoO are among the top five NTBs reported in Tanzania. Others include customs procedures, administrative procedures at the borders and variable levies.

Country Director, TMEA Tanzania, Paulina Elago, said “Let us give credit to TCCIA for their continued efforts to champion innovative ideas to produce home grown, private sector led products, which are of first class quality, to improve the trading environment and eventually reduce cost of doing business.  This initiative is consistent with TMEA’s overall objectives and our expected results of increasing intra-regional exports by 25 pecent come 2016, in addition to our efforts to promote the use of technology to bring about efficiency and cost saving measure to trade.”

The electronic processing of CoO by TCCIA is expected to set a benchmark for many other countries that continue to use traditional ways of issuing these documents.

IBM has predicted that the cloud technology adoption in Nigeria will grow to about 80 percent by 2015. This prediction was announced by the company’s Country General Manager, West Africa, Taiwo Otiti.

According to him, the adoption of cloud technology in Africa is currently at a tipping point and Nigeria is expected to record more than 2 times increase in adoption by next year.

He added that adoption of mobile phones and tablets is increasing the opportunity to interpret data patterns to anticipate needs and deliver improved services. The company also revealed that the continent is quickly moving to the center of global attention as the last big emerging market of the current economic era.

MTN has unveiled the MTN/Huawei Ascend Y220 Handset in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. According to the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Rahul De, appropriate devices are required for economic growth.

He said economic growth cannot occur unless the consumer has the appropriate devices to support and enhance the data experience.

He noted that in many markets across the globe, data services had become increasingly important to socio-economic development.

He said it was for this reason that MTN decided to partner with others to move Ghana forward in the digital economy Ghana.

He added that the network is focused on investing in world class technologies aimed at bringing relevant telecom services to their subscribers and was, therefore, excited to partner with Huawei to make available mobile phones that would enable people with busy lifestyles work away from their offices.

“Mr De disclosed that MTN had invested more than US $ 90 million in the WACS submarine cable to provide MTN subscribers in Ghana and across Africa the needed bandwidth and spent US $ 105 million on additional network upgrades and expansions,” MTN said in a statement.

He assured that similar investments would be made in 2014 in latest telecom technologies to deliver excellent network services and enrich the mobile telephony experience of subscribers.

One of Nigeria’s major banks, Diamond Bank, has provided ICT training for women involved in the nation’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector.

At the two-day training programme held at the Enterprise Development Centre of the Pan Atlantic University, beneficiaries of the training were taken through topical issues such as: Why do businesses need IT? Creating a Facebook Business page, Social Media for business, among others.

The bank’s Head of Retail Banking, Mr. Jude Anele, said: “Diamond Bank is interested in helping women within the MSME sector develop their businesses as research shows that businesses managed by women are relatively more stable and enduring. This training is part of our overall corporate goal of identifying with the vision of women entrepreneurs by equipping them with relevant skills to enhance their businesses.”

The Head of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Proposition, Diamond Bank, Mr. Chima Nnadozie, said the programme was a fallout of the Second SME Life Banking Forum organised by the Bank of Industry in conjunction with other partners, and was not restricted to only customers of Diamond Bank.

He said: “Capacity building is an area Diamond Bank is very strong at. We were at the Second SME Life Banking Forum last year, organized by the BOI in conjunction with Western Union and USAID, where MSMEs pitched their business case and plans to potential financiers and investors. Mobile learning technology for primary and secondary educators in Africa, Sterio.me is set to enter the Nigerian market as e-learning continues to gain ground in Africa’s most populous country.

Sterio.me was founded on the StartupBus Africa by Christopher Pruijsen as the chief executive officer, Dean Rotherham (Product) and Danielle Reid (Design). For its launch in Nigeria, it is currently in search of partners.

Christopher Pruijsen said the platform Sterio.me engages learners outside the classroom.

He said: “A ‘Sterio’ is an interactive audio lesson, which is per-recorded by the Educator and delivered via an sms-triggered inbound voice call to the learner, in order to reinforce in-classroom content. It is such that every lesson contains 10 minutes of audio content and questions, and teachers receive instant feedback on learner performance, saving them hours each day on marking assignments.

Founded by Kelvin Githuka Kihiu, Piero Muguna Mbaabu and Joshua Mutua Nzuki, Kejahunt  aims to help Nairobi’s middle and low income earners who the founders say have been neglected by other property listing platforms. They aim to list property going for as low as $40 ( Ksh.5,000) and let home seekers pick homes of their preference.

“We are making it possible for the low and middle income earners to get property listings they can afford on our online platform. Our platform is very user friendly with easy to use tools and we implement geo-location technology as a primary search tool. Our roommate feature has not yet been implemented in Kenya yet. We are the first to do it here,” Kihiu, Kejahunt CEO and co-founder told TechMoran.

KEJAHUNT“Home seekers can now go ahead to find their ideal houses based on their preferences on  the location, budget range and number of rooms. In addition to finding houses, one can find a roommate if they feel the need to share cost or just for company,’ Kihiu added.

Being schoolmates  and fresh graduates from Kenya’s JKUAT (Westlands Campus), the three felt the need to get houses to move into from our parents’ houses and hostels, but it was tough to find any good property anywhere.

“We got an agents number from the advertisements by the road side. The agent turned out to be a fraud as he asked for a fee before we could view the house which we did not even like. Going to the existing online platforms, we could not find houses going at a fair price as per our financial situation , all the houses seemed to be for the high-end market only,” Kihiu laments.

“Knowing the larger population in Kenya is made up of the low and middle income earners and most of them being the youth, we sought to find a solution to their house hunting problems.”

Now with hundreds of properties, Kejahunt works simply.

A home seeker logs on to www.kejahunt.com from their web browser  and  on  our homepage they will find a text field prompting them to input their preferred  location and on doing so they are provided with houses in the specified area from which they can choose from. The user can further narrow down their search by specifying the type of house i.e. apartment, bedsitter, Servant Quarter among others.

One can also select by the number of rooms they wish the house to rent or buy and also the budget range of the houses. All this is done without leaving that page as the platform responds each time you specify a preference, the houses show on the map  as per their specific location. On clicking on any of the properties shown, one is able to get a description of the house complete with photos of the interior and exterior of the house.

The platform also has a house sharing feature, allowing for users to pick friends to share the house cost in case the rent seems too high. Users search for a roommate on the platform where suggestions of potential roommates are given depending on the number of mutual friends they have on Facebook.

Kejahunt plans to rollout across East Africa in the next one and a half years and later on across  Africa. Sony mobile has begun the Android Jelly Bean (4.3) software upgrade for the Xperia SP Xperia T Xperia TX Xperia V smartphones.

SEACOM has unveiled a new senior management structure designed to cater for the company’s growth plans.

These changes, they say, will enhance synergies between regions and functions within the business, as well as position SEACOM to enter new markets in Africa.

SEACOM has established a new Business Development Group, to be led by Suveer Ramdhani. This department will focus on SEACOM’s strategic growth into new markets as well as evaluating strategic investments and possible M&A targets.

Previously the Head of Product Strategy,  Ramdhani is one of the founding members of the SEACOM leadership team and has a wealth of experience building businesses in the region, with his background in management consulting.

Chris Smyth was appointed as CFO in October last year and takes a hands-on approach to financial management with his strengths in wide financial, commercial and operational experience and expertise. He has held a range of senior financial management roles and has worked in both private and public entities in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. Chris will head up the Finance function which comprises amongst others, statutory and monthly reporting and analysis, budgeting, treasury, payments, billings and collections.

Product and service development will be consolidated into the Sales and Marketing functions currently under the leadership of Chief Commercial Officer, Byron Clatterbuck.

This new consolidation will put product development and market segment expansion all into one market-facing team. Clatterbuck has more than 15 years of global telecoms experience in managing large data businesses as a ‘line of business’ executive, focusing on data service expansion and profitable growth.

Other key changes as a result of this restructuring include:

  • Willem Marais promoted to Global Head of Sales, with global responsibility for all SEACOM sales teams across all segments;
  • Robert Marston promoted to Global Head of Product and will taking the lead in designing, developing and managing all SEACOM products and services.

The acquisition offers continued diversity in undersea fiber routes with capacity on multiple networks explained Raymond Macharia, AccessKenya’s Chief Technical Officer.

This includes alternative paths through Mumbai and South Africa, which, according to Macharia, will be helpful when Middle Eastern routes are unstable.

“To date, AccessKenya has deployed capacity of above 3.5 gigabytes giving us excellent and guaranteed service delivery options. With capacity on TEAMS, Seacom and Eassy cables we see this as a great value proposition to the market as we grow our services”, said Macharia.

The move comes as the company, which is currently extending its fiber cable in Nairobi and the Coast of Kenya recently acquired by the $5.8 billion global solutions and services provider, Dimension Data Plc and prepares the ground for growth into the counties.

Having made wireless connections recently in Kisii County and Isiolo County in January this year, AccessKenya intends to connect another 13 counties through its growing wireless, metro and national fiber connection.

The new product is in response to erratic power supply and extended power cuts in most parts of the country that often leaves home appliances such as refrigerators ineffective.

However, companies like LG are now putting their thinking caps on to find solutions for these particular pain points. Powered with the Innovative Power Cut Evercool Technology, the new range of LG Frost Free Refrigerators provides the longest cool air retention in the refrigerator section for more than seven hours during long power cuts.

“We manufacture products that fit the needs of our consumers and this launch is another cutting-edge technological innovation based on customers’ insights and the need to provide human-centric technological solutions” said Oktae Kim, the Home Appliances Product Manager LG East Africa.

The patented cutting-edge technology works by incorporating a valve in the fridge that opens when the power fails. The valve circulates refrigerants inside the unit’s extra evaporators to retain cooling. So whenever there is a power cut, it provides cooling at all sections of the refrigerator and retains it for seven hours.

“Evercool is a ‘Triple Cooling System’ with three evaporators. The main evaporator works with power and the two other evaporators work without power. So now you can enjoy your chilled beverages and avoid spoilage of dairy and other food products even if there’s a long power cut,”said Mr Kim.

The interview, with CNN’s Nima Elbagir will focus on Stewart’s journey as a scientist in diaspora and how he intends to use Africa’s first commercial technology research facility in Nairobi to help create innovative solutions to challenges in Africa.

Stewart recounts his desire of wanting to be a professional computer scientist, after his first degree at the University of Benin; he applied for a graduate scholarship at the University of Cambridge in England. To broaden his horizons, Stewart moved to the United States, where he joined the International Business Machine (IBM), one of the most prestigious research companies in the world.

With knowledge in the area of speech recognition and two decades of experience as an artificial intelligence researcher, Stewart decided to return to his home continent in a role that will help him solve some of Africa’s everyday problem as the Chief Scientist at IBM’s first commercial technology research facility in Nairobi.

Stewart advises global organisations around the world to follow IBM’s footsteps and invest in Africa. He says “IBM believes in Africa and wants to be part and a catalyst to its growth, this is why I truly love IBM, and this is why we are here to make a difference”.

LG Releases The G Pro 2 Smartphone

LG Electronics  has unveiled the LG Optimus G Pro 2, a phablet, which the successor of the  LG Optimus G Pro which was announced last year.

This smartphone may be Samsung’s Note 3 competitor, as it comes with a 5.9-inch 1080p LCD panel screen and has a 13MP rear camera with OIS+ , which adds software anti-shake functionality to the hardware-based features already built into the camer module; and  front camera of 2.1MP.

The sensors and lens of the rear and front camera on the G Pro 2 have increased in both size and sensitivity.

In specs, the phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (2.26 GHz Quad-Core) chipset and Qualcomm Technologies Adreno 330 GPU. It carries a 3GB DDR3 RAM / 16GB/32GB eMMC ROM / that can be expanded, a removable battery of 3,200mAh and operating of Android KitKat (4.4).

The LG Pro 2 weighs 172g and measures 157.9 x 81.9 x 8.3mm and comes in either red, white or Titan in colors

The LG G Pro 2 will be available in either LTE or LTE-A and it will be showcased later this month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It not known when it will strat selling outside the Korean market.

Intel is launching an “Intelligent Vending Competition” worldwide, aimed at seeking out new ideas, talents and projects for the vending machine market of the future.

This has been prompted by the occasion of its participation in Venditalia, the leading international vending market trade show which is set to take place in Milan (Fieramilanocity) from 7 to 10 May 2014,

Intel organized the contest in search for innovation in both technology and business within vending. Intel isreferencing three criteria in the contest:  user experience, business models and transaction models.

Improvement in user experiences and the ways in which humans interact with machines through use of touch screen technology, rich graphics and use of gesture recognition or integration with social media is a key component to the content.

Secondly, the adoption of new business models including multi-product vending, price campaigns, discounts, vouchers, coupons, loyalty programmes, advertising and advertising campaign efficacy will be judged.

Morocco Regulator Wants Prepay SIM Cards Registered

Mobile networks in Morocco that offer PrePay SIM Cards do not need to validate their customer’s identification beginning this April, say ANRT, the telecoms regulator.

ANRT announced the policy, which it said applies to both GSM and 3G customers, and banned the sale of pre-activated SIM cards.

Retailers will be required to collect the CNI number from the customer, or another suitable form of identification first.

In addition to that, the mobile networks are supossed to set up a process for collecting the identifications from their existing customer base. The network have been given a tim,e span of a year to secure the id of all their existing customers.

Although the specifics were not laid out in the statement, the regulator said that some process for cutting off unregistered SIM cards can be expected from April 2015.

MTN And Ghana Multimedia Incubator Center Sign A Partnership Deal

MTN Ghana Foundation and Ghana Multimedia Incubation Center(GMIC) have signed a partnership agreement; stating the MTN foundation will to sponsor a business incubation project targeted at final year tertiary students.

The ICT Business Incubation and Entrepreneurship project which the Foundation has pledged GH¢308, 000 ($122,014 ) for two years, will entail the organization of an innovations competition to select 10 start-ups into a Business Incubator Program.

The innovations competition will target final year tertiary students with focus on ICT. The selected persons will be trained and have their skills enhanced in the areas of software development and programming and Application development.

Serame Taukobong, CEO of MTN Ghana, said the signing of the special ICT Business Incubator and entrepreneur partnership attests to MTN’s commitment to leading the delivery of a bold, new digital world to their customers. He further stated that, the advancement of ICT has turned the world into a global village making it easy for people to connect, share resources and promote businesses among others.

“MTN is excited about this business incubator partnership because research has shown that most small businesses don’t make it to their fifth anniversary. In fact, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, only 44 percent make it past four years. In Africa, the situation is worse.  Business incubators exist to help businesses improve their survival rate especially through the formative period,” added the CEO.

Dr. Omane Boamah, Minister of Communications, said: “the business incubation is very important because it challenges the minds and demand creative thinking. It would help generate descent jobs for the unemployed youth.”

Solomon Asante Dartey, Director of GMIC, said the concept of incubation as a business development model had been the best means of support for technology commercialisation, particularly in the area of ICT and the sciences. He commended MTN for accepting to partner GMIC to push forward the innovative way of supporting technology start-ups.

The MTN Foundation, has invested over GH¢13 million ($5149926) in various community development projects in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment.

On Ideas, Strategy and Execution. Questions. Questions. And questions.

In the dawn of this new African Internet Commerce Era, what will win the day? Will Africa tweak internet commerce to its own specific situation, like China did, or will internet commerce tweak Africa? Will the hackneyed developed-world playbooks prevail here in Africa, as they did NOT in China, or will an entirely new African e-commerce paradigm evolve specific to the African situation, like mPesa in Kenya did for mobile payments in Africa?


The hammers have arrived Africa, and especially Nigeria, hitting on all nails in sight, left, right, and center. (But don’t hammers have a tendency to always see everything as nails to be hit?) Okay, just go a-hitting then (aka, a-executing). But wait. What will win the day in Africa? Idea. Strategy. Or execution? The Germans, like the hordes of Xerxes’ armies from Persia have arrived the Thermopylae of Africa, Nigeria, with huge and limitless resources and rocket-carrying warships to take over our frontier internet commerce landscape, seeking to capture the ?billion$ unicorns that are in plain sight. (Or so it seems.) They have landed via the Amazon river of the Atlantic, on taxis and cars, with shelters and hotels that have marketplaces in them, smoking delivered food. What should be our response to this economic onslaught? Should it be this, or this, or this. Or this—my personal favorite.

If they first came to you earlier as has been reported, carrying words of friendship and community (jumia, in Swahili) like they did to our fathers a century ago. And you saw through the rouse like Leonidas, in the YouTube embed above, did during his time. (Yes, some others did not.) And you had your well (konga, in Yoruba) well dug (pun intended) and have shouted like he did, “THIS…IS…NAIJA!!!” by taking some of their messengers captive into your well (konga, in Yoruba) like Leonidas did during his time. Should fairness still be an appropriate rallying war cry?

What will win this now OVERT wars in the many fronts of this battle for the African e-commerce space, where Nigeria is now the new Normandy? Is it

1.) Idea, or

2.) Strategy, or

3.) Execution (aka, Rocket), or

4.) Idea + Strategy, or

5.) Idea + Execution, or

6.) Strategy + Execution, or

7.) Idea + Strategy + Execution?

What do we need to win our respective individual battles? Personally, I believe it is mainly Africans with Jack Ma’s mindset, the mindset of a super excellent martial artist. People with the discipline, training, and experience of the US Navy Seal Team 6. People with the tenacity, formidableness and relentlessness of the 300 Spartan Hoplites that faced the hordes of Xerxes’ Persian armies and brought them to their knees. Personally, I don’t think we will win this war by trying to beat these German hordes at at their own game. No one beats the Germans playing their game. Not in business, not in football and, certainly, so will it not be in e-commerce in Africa. It is not for nothing that they are called The German Machine.

So who are those that will win these African Internet wars? Let me first borrow a quote from the introduction of the book Alibaba by Shiying Liu and Martha Avery, “Not everybody has set out to restructure the way business is done around the world by creating a new model for use of the Internet [like Jack Ma]…Almost everything about Jack Ma is counter-intuitive—he looks at the world from a unique perspective. His greatest delight is using small to conquer big, quick to conquer slow, and intuitive insight to conquer conventional wisdom. The abstractions by which he formulates strategic plans are based on moves of martial arts more than mathematical equations, and the mental discipline behind those moves informs his every thought. In Jack Ma we are looking at the incarnation of a traditional martial arts master.”

Personally, I think the ones who will win their battles are the ones who have peeled their eyes away from the conventional wisdom and models of how Internet Commerce has been played in the developed world. They will be the ones coming to these war with very fresh eyes knowing that Africa is not US or Europe—or even China for that matter. It is those who realize that the fact that a certain model of e-commerce worked and succeeded in US, Germany or even South-Africa, does NOT mean that model will succeed in Nigeria or Kenya. (Even mobile payments with a resounding success via mPesa in Kenya did not automatically translate to success of the same service in Nigeria!)

Dear aspiring African techipreneur, I think you need to go study the history of the Vietnam war to see why the US failed so horribly in fulfilling her mission for that war against a seemingly ragtag army, despite the wealth of resources at the disposal of the US, who eventually had to beat a shameful and painful retreat at the end. Or where else can we find inspiration that is fit for Africa and its unique terrain? Personally, my strategic inspirations come from the battles Leonidas and Hannibal fought—and won. Military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge once famously called Hannibal the “father of strategy.” (Sorry, I am a freak for military strategy because it is the simplest and purest form of strategy there is.)

What I find from my many studies is that advantage is usually rooted in difference. Advantage is usually rooted is a better understanding of the battle terrain where the battle will be fought. Advantage is usually rooted in a deep understanding of the psychology of the invading army and the people or king they left behind at home. From these spring strategic insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the competition. Battles are not necessarily won by which side has the greatest resources. Even the the wise King Solomon in the Bible made same observation, “I have seen something else under the sun: the race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned.” —Eclesiastes 9:11

So of the seven items I have listed above, to which do i cast my vote as to what will win in Africa? My vote is for 7 above. The challenge of a formidable African ecommerce general is not whether or not he will engage in war. No. He can’t run from wars. It’s his calling. (In fact, some other hordes will soon arrive to join this war in good time.) The main challenge he has is to choose which battles to concentrate his relatively limited resources and focused attention on in a war of attrition, what strategic ways and means to adopt to prosecute these, playing the strengths of his army against the weakness of the competition, while adopting an OODA approach to the execution of the battles he has chosen to prosecute. So, dear aspiring African techipreneur, Go Figure, Go Win or Go Home!

Workplace bullying requires focused, detailed and assertive response – Accsys

Employees who fall victim to abuse and bullying at the workplace have several options in terms of recourse action. However, experts in the HR field believe a systematic and focused strategy of documenting incidents with the idea of discussion at top level to hold those responsible accountable is the most professional and rewarding way to deal with the problem.

Teryl Schroenn is the CEO of Accsys, a member of the BusinessConnexion (BCX) Group and a national supplier of HR, payroll and Time & Attendance solutions.

Schroenn is of the view that both outside and in the office, bullying is about control and power.
She believes that if this scenario occurs to the point where the victim feels powerless and has reached the point where he or she stops believing in themselves, the aggressor has achieved their objective.

“The reality of low self esteem impacts every area of life. When it hits you in your skills and abilities, day-to-day effectiveness is a challenge, let alone applying for promotions. There is no “one size fits all” answer, and it really does require courage and commitment. If it is financially viable, therapy is a key part of rebuilding self-image. If it isn’t, there are steps that somebody who is being victimised can take. However, it is a reality that people in management often do not have the skill set to deal with entrenched bullying, and victims might be seen as wasting management’s time,” says Schroenn.

 To avoid this and to take the necessary control of the situation, the recommendation by Accsys, an established provider of solutions that empower decision makers, are focused on people development, is to be meticulous about recording events and incidents.

This involves setting a time frame to be documented and then taking action by keeping record of all relevant bullying behaviour including dates, times and facts. “If appropriate, enlist the help of a colleague,” says Schroenn. “At the end of the period, sit down and read carefully through the documentation. Ask a friend, mentor or trusted person in your private life to read through it, and give an honest assessment. Should you decide that the behaviour is so extreme that it is causing a serious drop in your confidence and ability to function in the workplace, set up a meeting with the relevant management to discuss your concern.”

 It is Schroenn’s experience this approach has the best possible results. It either offers the victim clarity in the situation, enabling them to take more decisive action and respond with more assertiveness, or it offers management a platform from which to take the necessary and appropriate action.

“Do ask for help quickly if you are feeling disempowered and ineffective at work. A company culture that builds a positive, motivated and empowered workforce has to be in everybody’s best interests,” Schroenn adds.

The alliance will ensure that Pamoja’s expanding channel and service provider ecosystem has access to these services, thereby enabling transfer of value to customers and add impetus to Pamoja’s objective of solidifying Africa’s Cloud community.

 

The company, established in 2011 by SEACOM’s founder Brian Herlihy and Stafford Masie, former GM of Google SA, is a provider of wholesale Cloud computing services via telecommunication companies, ISPs and other service providers in Africa.

 

Pamoja is focused on a wider market, incorporating the fast-growing Small-to-medium Enterprise (SME) segment, and leverages off SEACOM’s infrastructure, exposure to partnerships and Africa’s growing mobile and Internet market to entrench its services model.

 

Mark Smissen, Cloud Services Manager at Symantec, says the partnership provides Symantec the opportunity to address an exciting new route to market for its Cloud services. It is delivered by the next generation of specialist partners and service providers that are uniquely positioned to capitalise on the exploding demand for Cloud security services.

 

“It’s an opportunity for Symantec to address under served and unmet needs of customers and partners in Africa, and to do this quickly,” says Smissen.

What this means is that the reach and scale required in bringing security and compliance Cloud services to the SMB market is now possible. Through a new data peering arrangement between SEACOM and Symantec these services are delivered via the shortest and fastest route to the Pamoja cloud datacentres in South Africa and Kenya.

 

Both companies share the belief that the partnership will strengthen the value of service each offers the market.
