Africa Welcomes the Credit Card after a MasterCard & Ecobank Group partnership

Ecobank’s customers in over 28 African countries will from today enjoy access to MasterCard’s electronic payments solutions such as MasterCard prepaid, debit and credit cards, in a move that will see over 60% of Africa’s population access electronic payments after completion of MasterCard’s largest multi-country licensing project  in Africa.
This deal will also see Ecobank subsidiaries in 28 countries issue and accept electronic payments, a first in Africa. This MOU was first signed in  November 2011.

According to Patrick Akinwuntan, Ecobank’s Group Executive Director responsible for Domestic Banking, “The provision of convenient, reliable and accessible financial products and services forms the bedrock of Ecobank’s Pan African strategy.We also recognize that partnerships with leading global players such as MasterCard are key to accelerating the migration of our customers to a ‘cashless society’ throughout Africa.”

 

Africa has been lagging behind on card payments, even hindering electronic commerce.

Elated about the deal, Ecobank’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Thierry Tanoh said it demonstrates Ecobank’s vision to provide its customers with convenient, accessible and reliable financial products and services as part of our commitment to build a world class pan-African bank and contribute to the economic development and financial integration of Africa.

Ecobank will issue the cards in Burkina Faso, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea (Conakry), Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

“This is the largest multi-country licensing project completed by MasterCard in Africa and as such is a great milestone for us, as we aim to achieve our vision of a world beyond cash by bringing the benefits of electronic payments to an increased customer base in Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Daniel Monehin, Division President, Sub-Saharan Africa, MasterCard. “We expect that the 28 newly licensed Ecobank subsidiaries will begin to accept MasterCard credit, debit and prepaid cards at their ATMs and Points of Sale from early 2014, as we work with the Ecobank Group to complete licensing of the remaining Ecobank subsidiaries.”

Ecobank has over 1,200 branches across Africa and over 35.9 million acceptance points – including 2.1 million ATMs – in over 210 countries and territories globally where MasterCard cards are accepted. MasterCard is also working with governments to accept and expand usage of electronic payments.

MEST & UNICEF Ghana Launch Hackathon to Solve Sanitation Problems

MEST-Unicef-Hackathon-2014-logo-1024x361In a move that will see developers come up with web or mobile applications to solve local problems such as sanitation, access to information and water supply tracking, the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in partnership with UNICEF Ghana have launched a three-day competition to come up new technologies and win GHC 5,000, GHC 2,500 and GHC 1,000 for first, second and third prize respectively.

The event, which went live today January 15th  had the participants begin developing their ideas into ready for use applications.

The apps are expected to serve remote communities in Ghana and also nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth.

Ekua Odoom, Managing Director  – MEST said,“MEST is dedicated to supporting young and bright Africans to start their own software companies to create wealth and jobs in Africa. Our goal is that by setting this pace we can inspire generations that follow to achieve greatness in the continent.”

According to MEST, over 100 of Ghana’s brightest tech entrepreneurs were expected to join the competition.  Established in Ghana in 2008, MEST  gives training, seed investments and mentoring to upcoming tech entrepreneurs in the country through a fully sponsored two year  intensive incubation.

MEST’s partnership with UNICEF Ghana will help it pursue its vision of touching the continent in a phenomenal way- by helping find innovative technologies to serve the hard-to-reach in Ghana through this hackathon. UNICEF also believes that new technologies are needed to serve the hardest to reach communities in Ghana.

“Most of the problem statements presented by UNICEF are around how we, working with our partners, improve our ability to target resources and monitor and manage results,” Ngongi said. “We believe that this hackathon will come up with innovative concepts that can be further refined to improve the lives of children in Ghana.”

 

Mara Mentor Piloting New Mara Mentor App to Connect Mentees to Mentors

Africa-focused Uganda-based Mara Mentor has launched Mara Mentor app in a move to help young and ambitious entrepreneurs to connect with both experienced business people and peers in their fields.

The app will allow users to access the Mara Mentor community through their smartphone – anytime, anywhere and is free to download onto iPhone, Blackberry, Android and several Nokia smart phones. The app is already available in the iTunes, Blackberry, Google Play, Samsung Apps and Nokia Ovi stores.

To use the app, entrepreneurs just use their email address and password to log in while mentees without smart phones can continue to access the web platform here.

Mara Mentor, which is an online tool to help young and ambitious entrepreneurs connect with experienced business people and peers in their industry was launched in July 2012 by Ashish Thakar, the founder of Mara Group.
At the launch, Thakar told Forbes that the idea of the site started as an offline venture by Mara Foundation which had mentored 120 companies by then and him and the team felt the need to reach out to more youths in Africa and other emerging markets via the internet. The launch of the mobile applications makes takes it a notcher as most of Africa’s youthful population is accessing internet over smartphones.
UPDATE: The release is not a ‘launch’ per se, but a pilot of the app amongst a select group of registered users (nationwide) and a closed group of new users in Nigeria’s Imo State. The finalised app has not been launched.

Waabeh Hits One Year | Records Over 330,000 Streams & 10,000 Downloads

Africa’s music streaming and audio marketplace Waabeh has hit one year after launch, recording tremendous milestones in the now hotly contested Africa streaming market.

The music streaming service revealed to TechMoran that it had passed over 10, 000 downloads and was serving over 330,000 streams by January 14 2014.

“About a year ago we launched Waabeh, guided by a radical idea that African musicians could  finally control their destiny, reap from their labor of love all the while giving their fans a place  where they could listen  to and download  their favorite music, said Tim Rimbui, Waabeh co-founder and CEO.

“Our promise was a solution that empowered the artists with  simple upload and distribution over the internet and mobile apps, gave them a higher sales royalty as compared to the telcos that were keeping up to 85% [Waabeh keeps 30%]  in addition to  giving their fans  easy and  familiar  payment options such as mobile money [MPesa,] and credit cards,” Rimbui added.

Waabeh has expanded beyond it’s initial base of Nairobi,  Kenya  and is now serving musicians and their fans from all across the world in such varied places like The Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and even Japan. Rimbui says 2013 was a tough yet fruitful year and Waabeh is glad to be part of the larger African tech community offering working solutions to uniquely local problems.

Interswitch Smartgov to Raise New Revenues for Cross River State

GovLiyelImoke_2 Smartgov platform, an  identity management and e-payment infrastructure for state governments first deployed in Cross River State Nigeria is set to be used to raise new revenues according to an announcement during the 2014 budget presentation to the state assembly.

First deployed in 2011, Smartgov was developed by Interswitch in partnership with the Cross River State Government (CRSG) in amove to improve governance, accountability and access to social services for citizens.

Speaking during the 2014 budget presentation, Senator Liyel Imoke, Governor of Cross River State, has said that his government will expand ways Smartgov was being used. Smartgov helps state governments automate ministries, departments and agencies, identify all citizens and residents, track and monitor usage of social services, enhance internally generated revenue and automate disbursements and payments by government. This grows revenue, eliminates wastage, simplifies governance and increases access to government services.

According to Mr. Jonah Adams, Managing Director, Smartgov.CRSG Limited, “We are extremely proud of our achievements to date in Cross River State and the renewed commitment from CRSG to extend the use of the Smartgov identity management and e-payment infrastructure to eliminate wastage and grow revenues. It is our mission to help state governments to offer their citizens a more efficient service and better value for money.”

The Smartgov project has enabled CRSG to create a state-wide Identity Management System for residents and corporate in the state (the first state in Sub-Saharan Africa) while biometric-based Identity Cards have also been issued, providing cardholders with access to healthcare, pension, transportation, educational bursaries, social amenities and social benefits. Smartgov has facilitated the automation of key Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) revenue sources and services and the reduction of government processing cost.

Mr. Mitchell Elegbe, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Interswitch Transnational, said the success of Smartgov in Cross River State has given them a greater determination to roll out the solution across all state governments in Nigeria.

Epson Launches Next-Gen Augmented Reality Smart Glasses for Gaming & Video Entertainment

Epson-Moverio-BT-200-3Japan-based Epson Group, a manufacturer of inkjet printers and printing systems, 3LCD projectors and industrial robots to sensors and other micro devices has launched a sleek, light design, Epson’s Moverio BT-200 smart binoculars with miniaturised LCD-based projection lens system and optical light guide.

Showcased at CES the 88g Moverio BT-200 runs Android 4.0, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support and two transparent screens which work together to overlay an image in the centre of the user’s field of vision. They also contain built-in sensors including a gyroscope, GPS, accelerometer and microphone, as well as Dolby Digital Plus sound capability and a multi-touch track pad for controlling applications on the glasses’ 1.2GHz dual core processor. The glasses have a battery life of up to six hours.

The glasses have an advanced binocular optical system which projects see-through overlays of digital content onto the real-world with augmented reality apps for consumers and enterprises.

Aamito beat her fellow top 3 mates – Michaela Pinto from Angola and Opeyemi Awoyemi from Nigeria to emerge the winner.

She gets 1-year modeling contract with New York based modelling agency DNA Model Management, a product endorsement deal with P&G, a 1-year contact as an ambassador for South African Tourism, SNAPP, Etisalat, Verve, and a cash prize of $50,000.

After an emotional, 9-week contest, the final 3 were whisked away to New York City, where they had to impress the high-powered agents at DNA Model Management.

Microsoft To Reveal The New Windows 9 In April

In the verge of trying to merge mobile and desktop user experience, the software king, Microsoft, will soon reveal its latest OS in April, of course this year.

Windows 9 platform will also have to trounce user resistance to a more mobile style layout for desktop devices. The company’s current OS suffered criticism from users when it removed the classic Start menu, and spurred 3rd party software that restored it.

The prominent Microsoft blogger, Paul Thurrott revealed that the Windows 9 OS will be shown off in April, and will also see a return of the old desktop screen.

The new design, which has earned the name “Threshold”, will be unveiled at Microsoft’s BUILD developer conference in April, and will be in the market next year.

The company is also expected to have named its replacement CEO by the time of the conference, enabling the new boss to show off the new software.

MTN Nigeria Accused Of Selling Recharge Cards A Price Above Their Value

MTN Nigeria has no choice but defend itself over claims that the company was selling their recharge cards at a price above their actual value in some parts of Nigeria. The company has said that the values of the recharge cards are still the same.

The Corporate Service Executive, Wale Goodluck had this to say: “We have not effected a price increase and the retail prices of the various denominations of our recharge cards and recharge vouchers remain the same.”

Currently the recharge voucher are sold in values of N1,500, N750, N400, N200 and N100.

 “Any such hike is contrary to MTN’s wishes or knowledge. MTN has a well-established distribution structure and all our authorized partners within this structure are obliged to sell recharge cards at their face value. Any variance from the authorized face value of recharge cards is without MTN’s knowledge or authority,” added Goodluck.

The telecommunication company said that the subscribers have the option of buying airtime vouchers through recharge cards or recharge vouchers or through a virtual top up.

MTN further explained that the airtime recharge options were distributed through an extensive trade and distribution network, which has over the years, successfully enhanced accessibility to airtime and customer convenience.

He’s using a secure, Marshals-only channel. The bad guy or bad girl is somewhere on the flight with him. It could literally be anybody, but it’s probably the second or third most famous person on the cast. We’re looking at you, Julianne Moore.

How do you instantly crank up the suspense of a thriller? Take a bunch of people hostage. In “Non-Stop,” the texting buddy is holding the entire flight for ransom until he/Julianne Moore gets money wired to an off-shore account. “But how will the bad guy ever persuade the authorities to play along?” you ask. “That would take another thriller trot.”

Ticking Clock
That’s absolutely correct! When taking a group of people hostage isn’t enough, the bad buy has to threaten to kill people one-by-one in timed increments. “Non-Stop” gives Neeson 20 minutes between executions, and that would be bad enough if that was the only thing going on here.

He’s Being Set Up
“Something else is going on,” Neeson says in the trailer. And he’s right. That’s because the off-shore account the ransom money is supposed to be funneled to is in his name. That’s pretty suspicious, huh? You’d think that the government would start to assume he was behind it all based on that information, so the conflict of “Non-Stop” then becomes his struggle to clear his name.

“Non-Stop” is out in theaters on Feb. 28, 2014.

CCK HINT AT TEEN’S SIM REGISTRATION COMMENCEMENT.

The Communications Commission of Kenya yesterday hinted at the starting of Sim card registration among teenagers who will undergo the process using their parent’s identification card.

The move by the commission targets at weeding out mobile fraud among Kenyans and for the government to collect accurate data on subscribers as well. The teenagers who will have their Sim cards registered under their names will however have to be in the company of their parent/guardian who will  be rendered liable for all activities carried out using the sim cards.

At the press briefing, the Communications Commission also announced plans to institute a raft of reforms that are set to streamline the fast growing telecommunications sector.

The Commission of Kenya recently asked mobile operators to upgrade their service provision, which in an audit was termed inefficient having Safaricom lead with 50% -30% lower than the worldwide expectation.

This comes with heavy fines awaiting gazettement; Use of false information while registering will attract an amount of sh100,000 or jailed for six months contravening the new rules will lead to a fine not more than 5 million for mobile operators while agents will have to foot sh500,000 and 300,000 for persons against the regulations.

According to director general of the Communications Authority of Kenya Mr. Francis Wagusi, the penalties will instill responsibility from the mobile operator, agent and subscribers since they all stand to be accountable to an offense made.

Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears’ raunchy music videos have been banned from daytime television in France.

The country’s broadcasting watchdog Conseil Superieur de l’Audiovisuel (CSA) has ruled that channels can only show Miley’s ‘Wrecking Ball’ and Britney’s ‘Work Bitch’ videos after a 10pm watershed.

According to CSA, the ‘Wrecking Ball’ promo, which shows Miley swinging naked on a demolition ball and licking a sledge hammer is too sexually explicit.

The ‘Work Bitch’ video, which shows Britney in bondage dress portrays ”a sadomasochistic universe representing women in a way that risks shocking many viewers”.

The watchdog said that some French TV channels were showing the videos in the daytime without parental guidance warnings, according to Sky News.

At the end of last year, Miley debuted another controversial video for her track ‘Adore You’.

In the clip, the 21-year-old singer is seen writhing around in white bedsheets, and films herself licking and biting herself.

At one point the pop star runs her hands down her body before letting her fingers slide under the elastic band of her underwear as she bites her flesh and sucks her thumb whilst staring suggestively into the camera.

‘Wrecking Ball’ has now had more than 474 million views on YouTube, while ‘Work Bitch’ has amassed more than 70 million hits.

Altech Is Out Of Kenyan Market

South African technology firm, Altech, is officially out of the Kenyan market marked with the sale of a stake in UK Company Liquid Telecom that it acquired last year in exchange for shareholding in Kenya Data Networks (KDN).

Altech sold a shareholding which they acquired in February last year at 8.6 percent stake that it owns in Liquid Telecom for $55 million.

“Altech has exercised its put option and has entered into an agreement with, inter alia, Econet Wireless Global Limited to dispose of its 8.6 percent equity interest in Liquid for a cash consideration of $55 million, giving a profit rise of  $15.1 million before tax,” said Altech in a statement.

The filings with Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) value Liquid Telecom’s business across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho and South Africa at $640 million.

Altech also intends to clear debts with the chunk of money they have profited from.

“The cash consideration from the disposal will be used to reduce the Altron group’s net debt position following the scheme of arrangement between Altron and Altech, completed on 19th August 2013,” added the statement.

Liquid operates fibre infrastructure in the southern and central Africa and is partly owned by Econet Wireless Global, the company founded by Zimbabwean telecoms tycoon Strive Masiyiwa.

Altech was initially operating through KDN which it co-owned with businessman Naushad Merali. The duo reduced their shareholding after they sold a combined 80 per cent stake to UK-based Liquid Telecom, a year ago, in a deal that resulted in KDN rebranding to Liquid Telecom.

Should the board approve the sale it will result in Econet Wireless tightening its grip on the telecoms business at it is the largest shareholder in Liquid Telecom. Altech said that once the board approves, Econet is expected to pay Altech the cash by February 28.

Nigerian Society of Engineers Campaign For e-Voting Next Elections

 The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) wants the next election, which is next year, to use the electronic voting processes; this they say will ensure credibility.

NSE has recommended that the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) use the Nigerian Communication Satellite (NigComSat) e-Voting system; and is willing to offer technical support to INEC.

President of the Society, Eng. Mustapha Balarabe Shehu, said the country could save money by using an e-voting system.

“We have successfully used the NigComSat e-voting platform to elect our executive members twice and we believe that INEC could also use the platform in the coming election. Government is already tackling the issue of power and broadband penetration. Once that is settled, I believe the next thing is for INEC to key in into the e-voting platform. We have tested it twice and we believe that it is workable,” he said.

He explained how the society conducted its election using the NigComSat e-Voting platform.

“Prelude to the e-voting, an e-registration took place a day before where all eligible engineers had their data captured and saved on a database. Biometric details included photographs, fingerprints among others for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

“In all, 2,048 engineers were captured during the registration and 1,574 voted eventually. These figures surpassed those of previous year which recorded 1,313 on the register while 1,303 voted,” said Shehu.

He advised INEC to use the system on a small-scale for a pilot test and then eventually expand it to cover the entire country.

“The new vision of Nailab is to not only grow entrepreneurship in the Kenyan Nairobi tech scene but are now looking to stretch its footprint to encompass the growing counties,” said Josephine Mwangi, Nailab’s head of communications. ” We are also looking to help tech entrepreneurs develop products that will have recognized global impact on different nations.”

“The incubator seeks to expand its reach by targeting more entrepreneurs from other urban centers within different counties to enable the country have equal opportunity growth in the IT sector. We have also reduced our incubation time from the previous 12 months to 6 months. This will give a better chance to more entrepreneurs to  enroll and join into the program,” Mwangi said.
Founded in 2011 by Sam Gichuru, Anna Chojnacka and Bart Lacroix, Nailab has seen more than 30 start ups successfully go through its program. It graduated 4 of its November 2012-2013 entrepreneurs after successfully completing the program and also won a government contract in 2013 worth $1.6million to help map out the possibility of setting up incubation centers through out the country.

Though Nailab won’t be launching physical incubators in these counties, it will be working with different tech communities and hubs to establish contact and through use of county hackathons to see how well it can help drive entreprenuership in the counties. It expects the county-based entrepreneurs to utilize the mentorship programmes and hackathons to come up with solutions for their local problems affecting sectors such as farming, transport, security, health, education among others.

The initiative is not a one-weekend affair, Nailab keeps in contact with incubatees who have gone through the program to follow up on their progress and work with them further. The incubator in October partnered with Idesafrica.com, an aggregate platform for entrepreneurs across Africa, to host a pilot virtual incubation program for its over 750 entrepreneurs. It’s also set to launch campus incubators with universities in Kenya such as Inoorero University and JKUAT which  has had close collaborations with it.
In October Nailab held its first 2 day hackathon outreach program out of Nairobi in collaboration with JKUAT Mombasa which saw over 150 entrepreneurs and students formulate ideas and build prototypes.  A total of 15 ideas were developed and the 3 winning ideas were taken into the virtual incubation program.

Namibia has unveiled Citizen Connect a pilot project created to bring broadband access to the  Namibians.

This project comes under MyDigitalBridge Foundation in conjunction with the Millennium Challenge Account Namibia, and with the support of Microsoft and the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia.

The pilot uses white spaces technology to deliver high-speed and affordable internet access through unused television frequency, providing critical access to technology in remote and disadvantaged areas.

MyDigitalBridge is a Namibian not-for-profit organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of marginalized communities through equitable access to technology. The Millennium Challenge Account Namibia (MCA-N) is a development program funded by the United States government to help reduce poverty through economic growth. This collaboration was created between MyDigitalBridge, MCA-N, and the Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative.

This TV white spaces network in Namibia should come online in the first half of 2014. It will connect 34 schools and school circuit offices across the Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshana regions.

MyDigitalBridge says the network will also help further the goals of the Government of Namibia to bring universal and affordable broadband access and improved educational opportunities to its people. Additionally, MyDigitalBridge will make this infrastructure available to third party social entrepreneurs working to extend the reach of existing and new government e -services to currently unconnected citizens.

East African Data Centre Hosts Kenya Internet Exchange Point

Data center - 1East Africa’s largest Internet Exchange Point, the Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP) has chosen the East Africa Data Centre has beat other seven other firms to host KIXP to support its future growth objective of being the regional Internet exchange point for East Africa – and could guarantee connectivity, security and power supply.

According to Fiona Asonga, TESPOK Chief Executive Officer in a statement “This is an important strategic decision for the Kenyan telecom market as we herald a new future for Interconnection in Kenya and the region as a whole.  We are extremely happy with our choice of The East Africa Data Centre.  It has an excellent reputation for quality, reliability and service”.

Said to be East Africa’s largest and most sophisticated, the East Africa Data Centre launched in September in Nairobi and offers carrier-neutral, secure and reliable space for dedicated hosting, interconnect services, co-location, disaster recovery, network-based services, applications and cloud services to carriers, network providers and enterprises from across the continent.  Customers present in the building include banks, mobile network operators, ISPs and cloud solutions providers.

Nokia Appoints New Head of Communications to Ramp Up Its South East Africa Market Share

Leo McKay, the former head of communications for Nokia in South Africa started his career at Nokia in 2008 at the company’s Espoo headquarters. He handled a number of assignments while working in Finland, the last of which being in Nokia’s global press team as the head of global media strategy. McKay worked with many of the world’s most influential media and played a leading role in large scale global events and product launches. McKay also worked on the company’s financial communications around quarterly and annual results, did a large amount of executive speech writing for senior company executives, and served as an official spokesperson.

Prior to joining Nokia, Leo was a Vice-President at one of South African’s leading public relations agencies, FleishmanHillard.  He will be replacing Delia Sieff who has been promoted to head communications for Nokia in the Middle East and Africa.

“Leo has a great deal of experience at Nokia, both in Africa and globally,” said Gerard Brandjes, vice-president for Nokia in South East Africa. “He is a trusted advisor, a respected leader among colleagues and I am delighted to see him in this role.”

Kenyan Teenager Inspires the Launch of SwapKitabu.com, a Marketplace for School Textbooks in Africa

1451417_594583050588744_1178744311_nSteve Nguru’s daughter wanted school textbooks, she presented him with a list of 5 supplementary study books she needed at the beginning of 2013 when she entered class 8. The 5 books cost Ksh 2,590/(about $30). Nguru didn’t have the money.

“I thought that was too expensive for the average parent,” he said. Nguru did not buy the textbooks immediately but before long the teenage daughter came home with some of them. When he asked her where she got them from, she said they were abandoned by the previous class 8 class pupils.

“This is when I learnt that this is a common habit amongst candidates, not to mention the so-called “academic fires” where they burn all their books after exams. Aware that millions of homes in Kenya live on less than a couple of dollars a day, it hit me that I can use the power of technology to ease the burden of textbooks on parents, because there are a lot of such unused textbooks lying in many homes as well,” he told TechMoran.

Then Swapkitabu.com, an online market place for school textbooks was born. The site provides a platform for parents to exchange textbooks and takes off the cost, time, and hassle of looking for textbooks. It is based on the Hand-me-down model of sharing among families in Africa. It also enables one to sell the textbooks their kids no longer use, and to use the money to buy the textbooks the kids need. In effect, the parent spends little or no money for books each year.

Nguru says his target users are parents with school-going children who will sign up for yearly subscriptions, where he hopes to make some money.

His idea is driven by the fact that a good education is not an option but a must for the rich or poor. He adds that stats show that the present average book:pupil ratio in Kenya’s primary schools is 1:4. It is worse in urban-poor and rural schools at 1:7 or worse, according to Uwezo, an education research organisation. This means there is a yearly shortfall of millions of textbooks in both the public and private schools, greatly compromising education – a basic right.

In five years Nguru says SwapKitabu will be the go-to for textbooks for primary, secondary, and college/university levels in Kenya and beyond; and a place for users to get bargain deals on used textbooks. He expects to be the leading authority on data on textbooks: textbook ratios by area, textbook deficiencies by area and to assist potential individual/organisational donors of textbooks, as well as policy/decision makers on education materials funding at the local level.

Though without any external funding, Nguru says they welcome any angel investors to help them market and extend their reach countrywide, and to develop a mobile platform for the same. He is not afraid of the digital move as books remain important in people’s lives and people still buy hard cover books on Amazon. The startup is incubated at Nailab, a technology business incubator in Nairobi.

Now doing piloting in Kenya, for a March 1 public launch, Nguru says they are building up support among school administrations andd parents and introducing the platform to students across the country.

Kenyan Chess Club Launches New Website To Draw Potential Players

The Kenyan-based Westlands Chess Club (WeCC) has just redesigned its website, adding more features, backed with the mission to turn Kenya into a “mad-chess country”, drawing more players.

Months after the WeCC came to existence, its old website with the same URL has been quietly up for two and a half years. However, the new site opened on Friday is expected to attract at least 600 followers from its Facebook page, set to fuel more chess-loving fans.

Marking this year’s latest development, in the drive to ease navigation of which would to cater for the growing number of chess players in and out of the country, WeCC is not just launching a school initiative that would encourage youth to play the game, but is set cater for players keen on receiving news updates and game reports posted on the new website.

Yet, as one of Kenya’s newest and most progressive chess clubs based in the Westlands suburbs, WeCC has come a long way years after chess was introduced in the country as early as the 1920s, say British journal reports.  The board game was officially registered as a club for in 1958 by the Nairobi Chess Club. Years later, as the game emerged in the country, Paras Gudka and his supporters, felt the need to open Westland’s very own club.

Thus, the Westlands Chess Club was opened in August 2011 having its base at the Westgate courts beginning with one chess board and handful of players. And today, it now accommodates at least 40 players at the Slush Coffee World, Parklands Nairobi, in tournaments and even on busy Saturday afternoons. Its membership packages cater for a wide range of players including chess veterans, complete novices and a few occasional spectators.

According to the WeCC website developers, the new site is expected to deliver better user experience for visitors to find information efficiently. It has a design that makes better use of screen space accessing it through a desktop computer, laptop or mobile phone.

“This site works really well on my smart phone too,” noted WeCC Director, Paras Gudka.

Visitors can now post comments under each news item and event pages making it more interactive.

While adding PNGs of games played in the WeCC tourneys would be the club’s next mission, participants of tournaments organised by the Club would be assigned a rating of 1300 at the start of their first Blitz, Rapid and Classical tournaments, all of which would be expected to be posted on the website for further details.

Veronica Mars Movie Poster: Unveiled!

Fans of the movie have gone through great lengths to bring back the well-loved character, played by Kristen Bell. The movie is a continuation of a TV show of the same title which aired for three seasons. The Kick-starter project was created by series creator and now movie director, Rob Thomas. With a goal of $2 million, the project bursted at its seams at $5,702,153 with over 90 thousand backers.

Logan has been accused of murdering his current girlfriend and Veronica leaves behind lover Piz (Chris Lowell) to run to the rescue.
Aside from the main cast, most of the Veronica Mars series characters will be played by the original actors and actresses including Ryan Hensen, Krysten Ritter, Percy Dags III, Tina Majorino, Francis Capra, Ken Marino and Enrico Colantoni, says Yahoo.
