Avatar Sequels to be filmed in New Zealand

0

Avatar 2

Avatar fans you need not wait any longer, just 2 years, it’s finally here and production will be done in New Zealand.

James Cameron, producer Jon Landau and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key have announced that all three Avatar sequels will be filmed in New Zealand. The Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce had this to say about the announcement.

“The Avatar sequels will provide hundreds of jobs and thousands of hours of work directly in the screen sector as well as jobs right across the economy.”

The director reveals that he originally wanted to explore other worlds in Pandora’s solar system, but now he just plans to show fans more of Pandora itself.

“It’s going to be a lot of new imagery and a lot of new environments and creatures across Pandora. We’re blowing it out all over the place. At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary. I mean the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it.”

He also cleared up a rumor that Avatar 2 will be set entirely underwater, which is not the case.

“There’s a fair bit of underwater stuff. It’s been inaccurately said that the second film takes place underwater. That’s not true. There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films.”

It isn’t immediately clear when production will begin in New Zealand, but it was revealed that production on Avatar 2, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 will take place over a nine-month shoot. The budget for all three movies combined is expected to exceed a whopping $1 billion.

Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Avatar 2 comes to theaters November 2016

Avatar 3 comes to theaters November 2017

Avatar 4 comes to theaters November 2018

The original Avatar won three Academy Awards and is the highest grossing film in history, bringing in more them $2.7 billion worldwide. Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment will be producing the sequels. Can’t wait to watch the sequels, all excited.

M-Shwari Increases loan accounts In Just Six Months

0

 mshwari

Safaricom’s M-shwari has increased the number of loan borrowers by 1.7 million in just six months, which is from January to June; according to the latest data issued by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

This is a 82 percent increase in number of bank loan accounts which makes a total of 3.8 million, compared to only about 95,000 new borrowers enlisted in the whole of 2012; and M-Shwari is the reason behind this.

M-Shwari allows Safaricom subscribers to open a bank account with CBA through their mobile phones, save money and borrow based on their M-Pesa usage records.

The report also ranked CBA the second after Equity bank as the number of deposit accounts in the country had crossed the 20 million mark boosted also by M-Shwari.

CBA said that some of M-Shwari subscribers can now access loans of up to Sh8,000 based on their savings trends on their M-Pesa accounts.

Other lenders have also been looking for ways of tapping into Safaricom’s more than 20 million subscriber base with mobile phone based products.

It seems that involving the Mobile Phone in banking is the way to go, as other banks that have embraced mobile banking have seen a remarkable increase in banking. Some of them include KCB with M-Benki, Family Bank with PesaMob and very recent Equatorial commercial bank with GoMobile.

Linkage of mobile phones to bank accounts has enabled access to financial services and credit by low-income earners who have for a long time been excluded due to a lack of collateral and banking history.

“In July the lending to households surpassed loans to manufacturing, which shows banks are rolling out more loans to individuals,” said Standard Investment Bank’s Francis Mwangi.

The Central Bank did not give data on the sectorial distribution of loan accounts, nor whether the short term bank overdrafts were included in the number of accounts. A recent survey by the World Bank showed that most people borrow to meet short-term cashflow needs and not for investment.

“Kenyan firms cite working capital shortages as the primary reason for approaching banks. The distribution of loans may also reflect banks’ assessment that long-term loans are too risky,” said World Bank in a report dubbed Reinvigorating Growth with a Dynamic Banking Sector.

All unregistered SIM card owners in Zambia will now not have any measn to communicate because the  Zambian government has ruled out any extension to the deadline for mobile phone users to register their SIM Cards.

They have until the 31st of the month to make amends, after which unregistered SIM cards will be disconnected by the mobile networks.

The country’s Minister of Communications, Yamfwa Mukanga said that there will be no extention to the deadline saying that the process had started 18 months ago, and that the telecommunication operators had stopped selling unregistered SIM cards to new customers last month.

Rwanda & Republic Of Congo Sign An ICT Development Deal

0

 ICT

Rwanda’s Ministry of Youth and ICT and the Congo-Brazzaville’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that provides a cooperation framework between both institutions.

This agreement provides for cooperation between the two governments on ICT development and serves as a basis for promoting trade relations through information exchange on ICT products, capacity building, and market and business opportunities.

It also covers IT, telecommunications, cyber security, ICT capacity building, private sector investment, incubation centres, innovation promotion and local content development, and regulation of the ICT sector, among others

Jean Philbert Nsengimana, the Minister for Youth and ICT, told local media that the agreement open the ICT market opportunities between the two countries.

“About 22 Rwandan ICT companies presented their ICT products to over 50 firms in the Franco-phone state with the aim of creating strong partnerships in ICT,” said Alex Ntale, the director of ICT Chamber at the Private Sector Federation.

Ntale said the ICT chamber has been working with several institutions in Congo-Brazzaville since 2012.

In June, South Korea’s largest telecom company, Korea Telecom, signed an agreement with Rwanda to roll out 4G Long Term Evolution broadband network across the country.

The high speed wireless broadband technology builds on 5,000KM of fibre optic cable that is laid out across the country.

Early this year, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD), 2013 report ranked  Rwanda among the top 10 countries in Africa that are in  a good position to benefit from new information and communication technologies.

The survey that assessed the capacity of 144 developed and developing economies to leverage ICT for growth and well-being, highlighted  several aspects, including a country’s market and regulatory framework in advancing ICT for inclusive development.

grinch

5. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas

That small-hearted villain from Mt. Crumpit goes down to Whoville for some seasonal spoiling—only to discover that Christmas cheer can never be stolen. Spooky thespian Boris Karloff is the inspired narrator for this delightful TV special, a faithful rendition of the rhyming classic that will have everyone singing “Da hoo doray.”

christmas carol

4. A Christmas Carol

Humbug! Deliciously malevolent Alastair Sim plays Ebenezer Scrooge, the grouchy miser who endures various visions of Christmases Past, Present and Future during one marathon night of soul searching. Film Noir lighting gives visual flair to Charles Dickens’s yuletide yarn, but the film still leaves enough merriment to make this the ultimate holiday ghost story.

rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer

3. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town (1970) and The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974) all came from Rankin/Bass, the genius stop-motion company behind the Island of Misfit Toys, the Burgermeister Meisterburger, and sibling rivals Snow Miser and Heat Miser. Their funky riffs on holiday myths are irresistibly witty fun and a must-see during the Christmas season.

home alone

2. Home Alone

Macaulay Culkin holds down the fort against bumbling burglars while his family accidentally flies to Paris without him in this massive hit that’s every kid’s fantasy—and nightmare. While his Rube Goldberg booby traps and Edvard Munch–inspired visage deliver the laughs, it’s the warmer moments with negligent parents (as well as a mysterious shut-in neighbor) that give heart to this comic evergreen.

wonderful life

1. It’s a Wonderful Life

The reigning king of Christmas movies, Frank Capra’s poignant fable stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a man with big ambitions (and a bigger heart) who defers his dream of leaving small-town Bedford Falls, but makes personal sacrifices that create a staggering ripple effect of inspirational goodwill on earth—a great message for young viewers watching at home. He even helps an angel get his wings.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!!!

Kenya’s Soccer Story & Automs.gs Fighting For Top Position At the Appstar Challenge

0

appstar

Two Kenyans are still in the running to become the winners of the Safaricom and Vodafone Appstar Challenge, whose winners will take away $22,000.

The challenge, which is the second since the two telecommunications started, aims  to give support to the mobile App developers in emerging markets.

Kevin Oti’s Soccer Story is an app designed to help a football manager move a team from the lower leagues to the national league while Joe Njeru’s Automs.gs is an SMS scheduler App that allows the automatic sending of personalized text messages on pre-scheduled dates.

The two will be competing against developers from Tanzania, South Africa and India. The winning App will take home $12,000, while the second and third placed apps will each be awarded $6,000 and $4,000 respectively.

In last years challenge, Kenya’s Gerald Kibugi and Gilbert Rono emerged the top two winners in the Appstar Challenge finals held in South Africa.

“Safaricom looks at this and other similar competitions as milestones towards creating a vibrant Apps development economy aimed at providing thousands of jobs to the youth,” said Safaricom’s Chief Executive Officer, Bob Collymore.

A total of 2,200 apps developers registered for this year’s Appstar challenge which commenced in September. Out of these, 1,070 apps were developed out of which, the top 8 apps were selected following a rigorous mentorship and judging exercise.

The Appstar Challenge is designed to provide developers in emerging markets with a platform through which to showcase their applications to a larger audience while at the same time affording them the opportunity to interact with developers from other countries. The competition also allows developers applications to be made available across the participating countries appstores.

South Africa’s Going.co.za Acquires Fashion eCommerce Site Diligo

0

online shopping

South Africa’s Going clearance marketplace has made its first acquisition,  fashion eCommerce site Diligo in undisclosed amount in a move to consolidate its market position. The firm is set to make more acquisitions next year said Paul Greenberg, its Chairman.

This move will work pretty well as it has been recorded that more south Africans are shopping online; making the percentage grow from 44 percent in 2009 to 58 percent.

“We saw the same thing in Australia and the United Kingdom three years ago, where there was a proliferation of e-commerce spending big money building loyal customer following, but as private equity funds dried up the lack of profitability caused a speedy market consolidation. The smaller players struggled to find momentum and either closed down or sold out to the bigger ones,” said Greenberg.

He said that his various acquisitions are as much about the talent as they are for the companies’ infrastructure and customer bases.

“I think there is a shortage of talent in this space and these guys are showing they are very nimble and have some great knowledge with them. We are still using some of the pearls of wisdom that were brought in from the acquisitions we made years ago,” said the chairman.

The purchase comes at a time when Going is strategically focusing on growing a customer base that is now demanding wholesale opportunities.

“There is a convergence of B2B and B2C when it comes to sales and we are looking at more acquisitions to bolster our customer bases,” says Going Managing Director, Neville Bear.

Going.co.za, launched in July of 2013, achieved exceptional growth in the first few months of trading and this strategic move follows a growing demand from customers seeking bargains in the form of excess stock, returned inventory, aged ranges and liquidation stock.

Diligo, founded in 2010 by Lauren Graham and Kimberley Wood, will now operate under the Going name where users will have access to lifestyle products at up to 70% off current retail prices.

Lauren Graham said: “it’s an exciting time in the e-commerce space and after working with the Going team, I’m confident our customers are in good hands. I have no doubt Going will continue to offer users exceptional deals, in multiple categories, and continue to provide great service and delivery with their extensive logistics and sourcing experience.’’

In as much as internet connected thermostats aren’t a new idea, Google is working on a similar system, at least the software part of it.

It is currently a basic temperature control all that ha presets for when you are away from your home, or asleep. The automation and predictive features will be integrated at a later stage.

This app could be of big help and a money saver for many by simply setting up schedules of when temperature changes are needed for example heating up the house 5 minutes before wake up time would ensure you don’t wake up cold, or if you forget to switch off you heat, you can do it through your mobile app wherever you are.

No hardware is being made by Google for this app at the moment but there is a third party hardware that works optimally with it by the name Ecobee. This will make it even easier if you already have a smart thermostat.

KENYANS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT OVULATION STRESS AND NUTRITION.

0

At least according to Google’s Zeitgeist report- annual look at collective eyes of the world on web, Kenyans search on ovulation, love and kiss have topped the list.

Kenya Television News’s (KTN) Jicho pevu an investigative show emerged top among searches since presenters Mohamed Ali and John Alan Namu go out of their way to get to the bottom of issues affecting Kenyans socially, politically and even economically.

Unlike last year’s abortion that topped Kenya’s top searched health topics, ovulation, stress and nutrition have been on the rise Cancer and HIV/AIDS remaining top ten queries on Google search.

Emmy Kosgei among paul walker late Ruhila Adatia was also ranked top ten searched people, her wedding also appearing among the top ten trending events in it also being IEBC results and Westgate attack.

In the politics category, Kenyans searched on devolution which showed how interested they are on the new system of governance, IEBC also ranked top in the politics category following the march 4th election showing its significance to the state. Issues on policy, democracy, revolution, obamacare, security, nomination, Biometric voter Registration (BVR) and county also appeared under politics category.

Apart from local productions Jicho pevu and Tujuane appearing  among the top trending TV programmes, telenovelas graced the list with a search of Abyss of Passion, Amor Bravio, Punar Vivah and La Fuerza del Destino this showed the great love for soap operas among Kenyans.

Among exciting searches were “Kidero slaps shebesh”, Mike Mbuvi Sonko was among the top searched people and this being for the wrong reasons in politics and social circles.

Brooklyn Nine Nine (Season 1): Cops Prepare to be Mocked!

0

brooklyn nine nine 2

Season 1:

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is a police comedy with smart mockery and sharply defined characters in very well diverse company, led by (former Saturday Night Live member) Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, the precinct joker who’s actually a first-rate detective; and the admirable Andre Braugher proving to be a smart hand at restrained comedy as the Nine-Nine’s straight-faced new captain Ray Holt, whose intriguing back story makes him much more than a party pooper.

Dampening the fun would be a tall order indeed with characters as immediately engaging as Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris) as Sgt. Terry Jeffords, a shaky hulk who lost his edge after becoming a dad to twins; Stephanie Beatriz as the fiercely intimidating Detective Rosa Diaz, who nevertheless is being wooed in vain by Joe Lo Truglio’s miserably nerdy Detective Charles Boyle; Chelsea Peretti as the persistently gossipy civilian administrator Gina Linetti; and Melissa Fumero as the ultra-competitive Detective Santiago, whose rivalry with Peralta becomes an office obsession and distraction.

There’s considerable cast chemistry, but also nice touches as the cops go about their business, when in the middle of tense stand-offs and criminal pursuits they encounter stubborn Brooklyn-ites who refuse to get out of their way. And in what might become a running gag, you’ll see a familiar face in an inspired cameo as the detectives bitterly perform door-to-door canvases. In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the tendency is to laugh before you stop and frisk. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if that were true?

This show is hilarious and the perfectly timed come backs with by Braugher and Crews are classic. It’s the low key lines that make it hilarious, and the over-the-top cheap laughs are something all shows have to do to please the masses that are slow. Pay attention to the underlying comedy, its priceless and “Terry does love yogurt” is the best line if do say. I give this series 7.5 stars for the comical effect.

Nigerians express dissatisfaction over high cost of internet access

0

internetIn spite of the recent reduction in the cost of internet access by Globacom Nigeria, many Nigerians believe the cost of internet is still high and are enjoining the telecommunications company and others involved in provision of internet services to expedite action in ensuring that the cost of internet access is within the reach of all Nigerians.

On the most visited website in Nigeria, Nairaland.com, visitors said the reduction by Glo is not good enough. They also expressed concerns over other forms of internet access, especially broadband.

Visitor with the username ceo4eva said the networks are stingy, inconsiderate and are battling with misplaced priorities.

He said: “Glo being an indigenous company should have done better but they are too Stingy and Inconsiderate. We only hear of Glo Fibre Optic Cable, Glo Submarine Cable, Glo SAT 1, etc over the media and nothing more. They only invest huge funds on rich Celebrities for adverts instead of improving on their Network and Service Delivery.

“Thank God we have better alternatives!
“GLO…We’re Not Interested In This Sort of Thing. Thank You.”

Another commenter, freebreezeyz said the downtime periods on the networks are on the rise.

He said: “The downtime I experience aint funny at all! and wen I complained to them, the call center lady advised I switch off and switch on my phone. now consider how many times you would have to be doing that.”

In a swift move to improve the quality of services, the regulatory body in charge of the communications sector in Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said as from January 1, 2014, it would not hesitate to slam defaulting networks with fines, sanctions and jail term for falling short of expected service quality.

Broadband is powerful enough to transform Nigeria – Comm Tech Minister

0

Mrs. Omobola Johnson, Nigeria’s minister of communication technology has declared that connectivity via broadband is transforming lives in Nigeria. Speaking today in Lagos at the inaugural telecoms stakeholders’ summit organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the minister said there are several real life stories about how broadband is helping Nigerians in their daily lives.

“This is not fiction or day dreaming by a passionate Minister. These are real stories. I could go on and on about how lives have been transformed by the presence of broadband,” Johnson said.

She added that the power of broadband is in its ability to transform the lives of the citizens on an individual basis and the nation as a whole.

Johnson said: “The often quoted statistic of a 10% increase in broadband penetration delivering a 1.3% increase in GDP is not an empty statistic. Broadband can increase business productivity, can lead to the creation of new businesses and jobs, can save lives, can deliver much needed skills in a developing nation.”

By increasing broadband penetration from 6% to 30% by 2017, she said the nation could record a 3% increase in GDP.

“This is what makes up the GDP of a nation-and the most powerful and compelling pat of these stories is that this is GDP growth with jobs. Today the ICT sector contributes just over 8% to GDP- if we achieve our targets of a five fold increase in broadband penetration by 2017- from 6% to 30%, we will deliver through broadband, a phenomenal 3% increase in GDP,” the minister said.

MTN Uganda Pulls a Safaricom, Launches ReadyPay; a Pay-As-You-Go Solar Power System

0

ultraMTN Uganda and Fenix International have launched an ultra-affordable Pay As You Go energy solution in a move to bring safe lighting, phone charging and more to those living off-grid across the country.

Dubbed ReadyPay Power, the Ush 40,000(about Ksh 1,500) system is available on a Pay As You Go basis using MTN Mobile Money and buyers can pay as if they are topping up their mobile phones. Users of the  7 days power kit  have to top up payments from Ush 1,000 per day (about Ksh 40) to unlock the power until their kit is paid off.  After that, owners get power for free.
Kenya’s Safaricom’s launched a similar platform last year dubbed M-KOPA Solar.

1383096_535704063175623_1119871576_nMTN Chief Marketing Officer Ernst Fonternel said,“The amount one pays determines how long one can access the power. For example, on the most affordable kit, a payment of 1,000 UGX will provide power for a day, whilst a larger payment of 30,000 UGX will provide power for a month.”

The ReadyPay Power System provides bright, safe, reliable lighting without the risk of using kerosene lamps, and secure phone charging without leaving your own home. It’s easy to set-up, no technician is needed, and comes with an 18 month warranty. Due to integration with MTN Mobile Money, customers can make small, affordable payments until they own the system.

ReadyPay has a solar panel, battery pack featuring 2 USB ports & 2 car lighter adapter ports plus a range of lights and phone charging accessories. Larger kits include radio or TV accessories and additional accessories like hair clippers or torches are sold separately.

Today On The Tech-tionary

 tech-tionary

Today we will take a dive in the internet area of technology, some know some don’t know what this words mean even though we are soon shifting into to digital world this words are still jargon to some; some other will be seen or rather heard after we have successfully migrated, digitally of course.

  • Broadband – This is a way to spread data through a single medium that carries many channels at the same time. That is how people can surf through the internet each on different computers and every person looking for something different. More  like a tree with fruits many people can feed on one tree with different branches and be satisfied.
  • Spectrum – This is a range of frequencies which wireless devices can use to transmit and receive information. In simple terms we can equate it to a telephone line, they are invisible connection lines that enable wireless devices to transmit and receive information.
  • White space – Television is transmitted in mass of radio signal which have space in between them, this is the space that creates a difference between stations. In between this stations are spaces that could be used as stations yet they are free. That is what we call white space. To bring the point home; it is like a new building with few occupants the empty rooms are what we would call white spaces
  • Digital television – This is a way of receiving television signal in a digital format in that there will be better and clearer pictures as well as good sound; this also gives more space in the frequencies unlike the analogue which occupies a lot of irrelevant spaces. Switching to digital means that there will be more space for other broadcasting stations, and will be broadcasting better pictures as well as audio. No more fixing of the Ariel.
  • Digital migration – this is the process of moving from the analogue signal to the digital, meaning clearer pictures and audio releasing empty frequencies that the analogue occupy to create more space for other broadcasting channels to fill.

Top 5 Breakthrough Performances Of 2013

0

One of the great pleasures of being a movie fan is the discovery of new performers. So here we go:

Paulina Garcia

5. Paulina Garcia – “Gloria”
The Chilean actress—best known for her theater work back home—plays a fifty-something divorcee, still glamorous, but deeply lonely after her children have left home, who immerses herself in the world of singles dances, and becomes drawn to an older man still tied up in his own family. Like a sort of South American Mike Leigh heroine, Gloria can be maddening in her self-deception and repetition of past mistakes. But you also love her from the first frame to the last (particularly after her glorious late-in-the-game revenge), with Garcia giving a performance of tremendous warmth and vivacity. Quite rightly, she won the Best Actress prize at Berlin in February, and if there was any justice, she’d be nominated alongside Bullock, Streep, Blanchett, et al. at the Oscars. Still, with Chile currently putting out some of the most exciting cinema around, we sincerely hope there’s more to come from Garcia soon.

Lupita Nyongo

4. Lupita Nyong’o – “12 Years a Slave”
We heard that one of the standout performances of the film came from someone called Lupita Nyong’o. And they were absolutely right, because now, the Kenyan raised actress, cast in the film soon after her graduation from Yale last year, is on her way to an Oscar nomination after a truly extraordinary performance. Nyong’o doesn’t really register in the film until almost halfway through, but once Patsey, the tortured slave so beloved by Michael Fassbender’s cruel slave master, arrives, she’s not quickly forgotten. Other characters get far more screen time, but every second of Patsey is truly wrenching, from that unforgettable whipping scene to her desperate plea to Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Solomon for him to kill her, rather than let her live any further in the world she can never escape. It’s a performance of fierce anger and compassion, and if Nyong’o can pull something like this off at her first time at bat, imagine what she can do a decade from now.

Barkhad Abdi

3. Barkhad Abdi – “Captain Phillips”
If necessity is the mother of invention then perhaps desperation is the bastard offspring of survival and necessity. In Paul Greengrass’ kinetic snapshot of the pirating of the Maersk Alabama cargo ship, Barkhad Abdi plays Muse, a Somali man forced to turn hijacker because of his dire economic circumstances. Starving literally and figuratively, Muse claws his way to the top of his dismal food chain, dispensing one of his rivals to become the pirate leader. However, we get the sense the Somali man isn’t violent by nature, but that his grim situation has transformed him into the zenith of desperation. Naturally, Abdi plays Muse like a wide-eyed starving rat; all raw nerves, skeletal psyche and false sniggering ego. But his puffed up, inflated self-worth, belies what’s underneath: a scared human being forced to suck up what wicked reserves he has inside to pull off this heist and feed himself and his family. What’s more Abdi goes toe to toe with Tom Hanks in what is one of his strongest performances to date. Not bad for an unknown first-time actor who has to somehow inject some sense of humanity into a character who would otherwise be seen as a one-note villain.

Brie Larson

2. Brie Larson – “Short Term 12”
Brie Larson’s been around a long time and she’s built up quite the roster of credits and respect in shows such as Showtime’s “United States of Tara” and in films like  “Greenberg,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” and “21 Jump Street.” But 2013 was the year of Brie, with impressive turns as Miles Teller’s ex in the Sundance hit “The Spectacular Now,” and as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s sister in his directorial debut “Don Jon.” But it wasn’t until SXSW when Larson got to show off her leading lady chops in that festival’s big winner “Short Term 12.” Often cast in the blonde mean girl roles, Larson is decidedly dressed down as Grace, a supervisor at a foster care facility who is dealing with her current life challenges as they collide with the ramifications of her troubled past. It’s a role that demands a lot of Larson, as she has to demonstrate all sides of Grace: her strength as well as her weakness, her deep mourning for herself and others, and her joy in the small victories; her fear and her fearlessness. It’s a deeply physical role that she inhabits fully, whether she’s biking out her anxiety, chasing down a wayward kid, or unleashing her rage on the windshield of a car.  It’s an incredible emotional and physical performance. She’s stunning in this role, proving her might, her vulnerability and just how darn watchable she is. She’s been here all along, but she’s proven she’s got talent to last.

Adèle Exarchopoulos

1. Adèle Exarchopoulos – “Blue is the Warmest Color”
Seemingly moments after “Blue is the Warmest Color” won the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the discussion turned from the relative merits of the film to just about anything else—the prolonged lesbian sex scenes, the original comic book author’s displeasure with the adaptation, the endless infighting between various members of the creative team. Exarchopoulos’ performance borders on the miraculous; she’s able to portray a teenager consumed by a fiery love affair with a blue-haired girl (Léa Seydoux) and, somehow, an older version of that same girl, one who has loved and lost and matured greatly along the way. Part of that transformation is physical; in earlier parts of the movie she’s less a personality than an engine, eating and fucking and throwing herself around. In the later sequences she’s more measured, nuanced, and exacting, even her posture becomes more rigid. The sex sequences are feats of infinite bravery, as well, but Exarchopoulos is even sexier in one of the movie’s non-sex scenes, where she’s sprawled out, nude, a cigarette dangling precariously from her upturned mouth, her arty lover sketching her nearby. Exarchopoulos perfectly captures, in a beautifully rendered performance full of wit and grace, the sensation of falling in love with someone and knowing that, no matter how much you try and fight and wish it to be true, that you’ll never, ever, as long as you live get over that person.

Nigeria’s iROKOtv Receives $8 Million Series D For Africa Consolidation | Round Brings the Total raised to $21Mn

Njoku and Gotter
Njoku and Gotter

In a move that makes it among the continent’s most funded companies, Nigerian movie platform for Africa iROKOtv, has received $8 million series D funding led by existing investor Tiger Global, with further participation from Sweden-based Kinnevik and introducing new investor to this round, US-based Rise Capital.

This funding round brings iROKO’s total money raised to $21Mn, and will be used to build and transition the company’s audience from a primarily Diaspora base to an African base, as well as migrating from a largely ad supported model to more subscription service. iROKOtv’s 50% audience is located in the UK and US alone, this is OK but as Africa moves online, there’s a gap for homegrown multi-platform video content. iROKOtv will use this funding to focus on its African audience, monetize its catalogue through its SVOD service, iROKOtv PLUS, as well as through its strategic distribution partnerships with global airlines and TV channels. The firm will also use the cash to grow traffic, curate more content and build a platform-agnostic distribution system for its 1Mn monthly users.

According to Jason Njoku, CEO and co-founder, “The $8Mn raised by Tiger Global, Kinnevik and Rise Capital will further fuel our expansion and help us to realise our long term goal of becoming one of Africa’s preeminent media companies. We started life three years ago as a Nollywood content aggregator on a YouTube channel and today we find ourselves with a VC-backed dedicated VOD platform, watched in 178 countries around the world, with one million unique visitors a month. These metrics were achieved with hard work from a great international team and today’s news allows us to continue in the same vein and accelerate our growth.”

iROKOtv has been raising money, and if you are wondering, they have been using that cash to acquire content, expand the London-based tech team, develop mobile websites and applications and open offices in London, New York and Johannesburg, alongside the company’s Lagos headquarters. This money has made it the owner of the world’s largest online catalogue of African content, with over 5,000 movies.

US-based Rise capital will join the firm as the new investor while its its managing partner Nazir Yasin will become an active member on iROKOtv’s board. Yasin is not new to iROKOtv as he previously worked with Tiger Global. The funding is a faith in Africa’s growing media businesses according to Mia Brunell Livfors, President and Chief Executive Officer of Kinnevik.

With a $5 month subscription service dubbed iROKOtv PLUS, business is not so bad as the firm says its their largest single source of revenue, beating advertising,  but with over 95% of their content accessed freely, the ‘Netflix of Africa’ will use the firms to firmly grip the continent’s movie programming as several players start to launch.

Bastian Gotter, COO and co-founder confirms, “ This additional capital allows us to consolidate our position as VOD market leaders for Africa, invest in tech, content and infrastructure and, importantly, we are now in a position to become profitable by 2015, which is an extraordinary feat for any start-up, let alone an African VOD one like ours.”

The Family, It’s brutally funny

0

A mafia boss and his family are relocated to a sleepy town in France under the witness protection program after snitching on the mob. Despite the best efforts of Agent Stansfield to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni, his wife Maggie and their children Belle and Warren can’t help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems the “family” way, enabling their former mafia cronies to track them down. Chaos ensues as old scores are settled in the unlikeliest of settings.

The family dad

The family’s love for each other is unconditional and treats challenges with a baseball bat rather than diplomacy. If a Frenchman disrespects Americans, he might find his supermarket in flames. Its throwaway stuff packed with corny gags about rich French cooking and annoying Gallic manners, in which light relief is offered by the sight of our hero torturing a plumber. Eventually De Niro winds up at the local film society watching Goodfellas – presumably leaving him wondering (as do we) what the hell happened.

the family daughter

If this sounds like a story to turn the nuns’ heads completely around, don’t worry; it’s an ultra “black comedy,” equal parts Italian-American gangster satire and laughable domestic shenanigans. It’s pretty much territory owned by Scorsese and De Niro. Additionally, the use of the “f” word has never been so cleverly played in a comedy. After a few times of “things” happening they came to be expected. But I still couldn’t help laughing. And really the only time I didn’t laugh was because the script decided to have a couple serious moments.

Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t just stupid laughs. There is a plot, there is acting; there is everything that makes a great comical movie. Some people really hate this movie, but I say if you love humor, this is for you. Comparable movies are Law Abiding Citizen and Donnie Brasco without the corny comedy, 6.3 stars for The family.

The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) has today reviewed downwards tariffs for digital signal distribution; this move is aimed at facilitating a smooth migration from analogue to digital television broadcasting in the country.

According to Determination No. 1 of 2013 on Cost-Based Terrestrial Digital Broadcast Signal Distribution Tariff issued today, Digital Signal Distributors shall charge broadcasters at Ksh. 125,990 per MB for Nairobi and Ksh.93,202.75 per MB for other sites in Kenya. This new tariffs will take effect from today.
Before the review, the Pan-Africa Network Group (PANG) had proposed to charge broadcasters a monthly signal distribution fee of Ksh. 1,135,312.50 per channel in Nairobi. Kenya Broadcasting Corporation-owned SIGNET on the other hand had proposed to charge Ksh. 248,141 per MB for signal distribution services within Nairobi.

For other sites in Kenya, SIGNET had proposed to charge a uniform signal distribution fee of Ksh. 248,141.45 per MB, while PANG had proposed to charge a flat monthly fee of Ksh.378,437.50 for signal distribution services in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldoret, Kakamega, Kisii and Meru.  For Malindi, Webuye, Garissa, Narok, Kericho, Isiolo, Kitale, Bungoma, Embu, Voi and other regions, PANG had proposed to charge broadcasters a flat monthly fee of Ksh.126,145.83 to distribute their digital signals.

The Regulator further requires the two Digital Signal Distributors – Pan African Network Group (PANG) and Signet, to publish a Reference Offer three months from today in order to ensure that there is access, transparency and non-discrimination on the terrestrial signal distribution platform.

According to the determination, digital signal distributors are also expected to prepare separate accounts for each commercial subsidiary including the appropriate allocation of central overheads within six months from today.

In arriving at the afore-cited tariffs, CCK adopted a consultative approach where the signal distributors were involved.

Text Sharing Apps Violates Mobile Operator’s Terms & Conditions

0

 Android

The android text-sharing apps have proven popular due to their ability to send unlimited numbers of text messages, as well as reward phone owners for each text they relay.

This has however raised complaints from mobile operators who claim violation of their terms and conditions since routing text messages through a phone makes it cheap to deliver text message to its destination including across boundaries worldwide.

The sheer number of text messages passing through phones could cause phone owners problems as well since the operators have the capability to block the number.

“There is a huge market in sending text messages as cheaply as possible around the world; you cannot resell your message plan operators have terms and conditions for a reason.” said Cahal McDavid from mobile security firm Adaptive Mobile.

Bazuc one of the message- relaying Android apps spokesman said it told participants to ensure that the daily limit of messages they send is not set too high. “We are fully aware that mobile operators are not going to be a big fan of this app, we’re simply trying to help people out there make some extra money.”

Mobile owners receive $0.001 for every text relayed therefore a customer using multiple phones uses the app to cash in. The act is breach of terms of the mobile operators contract which could easily lead to service suspension.

Tanzania’s Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service Hits One Year | Reports Over 21 Million Messages Sent

0

Mobile phone users receive SMS from their friends and family and even work mates everyday. Though this SMS text messages are important, one organization in Tanzania has decided to use the simple format to reach pregnant mothers and their husbands with messages of life.
The The Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service, an initiative of mHealth Tanzania Public Private Partnership Tanzania and Text to Change, is helping give advice to mothers and fathers to be in a country with over 22 million mobile phone subscribers. With over 21 million messages sent, the service is looking forward to a greater 2014, and more partnerships to help reach more Tanzanians.
Khalifan Ramadan, is one of the 300,000 Tanzanian registrants who signed up for the Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service which has been promoted across the nation and offers a large range of maternal health and early childcare topics via SMS directly to his phone.
gI_65990_Preggie-phone-focus-bellyRamadan says he receives about 3 or 4 messages to his phone every week with a lot of maternal health advice.
“This is our first pregnancy. It is easy to do something wrong, but these messages inform us how to do it right. Also, I don’t need to pay for the service,” he said.

The simple service has now send over 21 million messages to pregnant women, mothers with newborn babies (up to 16 weeks) and supporters of women, like this father to be.

Those who are just in need of general healthy pregnancy information can also sign up. The objective of the service is to offer men and women – located in every corner of the country and from any income level – healthy pregnancy advice and early childhood care information. This information includes time sensitive reminders for such events as antenatal clinic visits and taking of malaria prevention medication. This information is carefully timed and relevant to the specific registrant, like pregnant women or their supporters. The carefully targeted large range of healthy pregnancy topics, from ANC visit reminders to birth planning and ‘fun’ informative information for all these types of audiences, makes this a unique service. However, there are other important aspects that make this service so special.

According to Muttah Saulo, mHealth Tanzania Public Private Partnership project manager of the Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby – Text Messaging Service,“The service is truly an example of the perfect implementation of expertise sharing and pooling of resources. It is important to understand that the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) Reproductive Child Health Services (RCHS) section is the overall leader of the service. Together with many technical partners in the maternal health and early childcare fields the RCHS team provided key input to the development of the messaging service and content and will continue to do so when the service expands with information reaching beyond the age of 16 weeks of a baby.”

The Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service was launched in November 2012 with the Wazazi Nipendeni (Parents Love Me) Safe Motherhood multi-media campaign and funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and US Presidents Malaria Initiative, through the United States Agency for International Development.

Also using radio, TV, billboards and posters to promote the free short-code (15001) and the registration keyword ‘mtoto‘(‘baby‘), the campaign directs the public to register and receive the information for free.

Now with over 300,000 subscribers on the platform, the Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service is free to use with subsidies paid by the US Government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With a two-year partnership with Airtel Tanzania, the SMS service reaches a large number of registrants who access it for free.
