Communication Authority Orders Pay-TV providers to Let Consumers Access Free to Air Channels

0

The Communication Authority (CA) has ordered all pay-TV providers to allow access to free to air (FTA) channels on their decoders.  The providers received licenses two years ago. Allowing them to broadcast free to air channels but some of the providers have since blocked consumers from accessing them.

The free to air local channels include, KTN, NTV, KBC, Citizen and other local channels that were to be aired on the Pay-TV platforms at no cost.

The CA director-general Mercy Wanjau in a letter addressed to all chief executives and managing directors of the Pay-Tv providers noted that. The pay-TV providers do not allow FTA channels transmitted from the Pan Africa Networks Limited (PANG), Signet, Bamba and Africa Digital Network (ADN). The authority notes that they have received complains from the consumers.

“Some digital terrestrial television (DTT) service providers have gone ahead to configure their platforms to bar set-top boxes to from receiving free to air signals from other platforms” She added.

Further, the CA has given 48 hours to give consumers access. Adding that their actions are contrary to the regulations which limit the pay-TV providers from denying consumers access to the channels.

The licenced DTTV providers have been ordered to unconditionally remove all the restrictions. And enable reception of all FTA broadcast signals from all other DTT platforms. A directive that will relief millions of consumers especially in these difficult times. At least, they will access news freely without being cornered to pay for access.

Is VPN Legal Illegal? Your Rights, Explained

0

In the age of electronic and digital invasion over confidentiality, data security has never before now been so insubstantial. Sophisticated services have been modified and updated to provide high-quality security and, most importantly, ensure safety. However, what does safe even mean nowadays, and is it illegal?

Virtual Private Networks, also known as VPNs, are the first services you basically go to for help in steering clear your private info on your private computer from traffickers, hackers, and even other network administrators.

This can be achieved by changing your main IP address, controlling your present location, having access to private content, and also downloading freely without any trace. Is it genuinely possible to stay untraceable, though? More importantly, is it legal?

How does it work?

Just put, a Virtual Private Network acts like a protector assigned to your personal data, 24/7/365. Everything you do while on the World Wide Web is visible to your Internet Service Provider since your network provider already has access to your internet activity via your IP address. This means you are totally vulnerable to intruders, snoopers, and hackers that have no significant obstacles in reaching your emails, bank accounts, contacts, and your life.

Also, an ISP typically has a digital portrait of all your data, which can be simply forwarded or sold to the government or those in need of your information.

Is VPN Legal?

Most nations legalize the use of VPN including the United States. This, however, comes with a few vital caveats:

  • VPN in the United States is legal; however, anything that is illegal without a Virtual Private Network remains illegal when utilizing one (example, torrenting copyrighted material.)
  • VPNs, however, are illegal in a few countries – Some countries, such as Russia, North Korea, and Iraq, ban or restrict the utilization of VPNs.
  • The use of VPN can breach terms of some service – It is not illegal to access services such as Netflix over a Virtual Private Network, although it actually breaches their terms of use.
  • Law enforcement can ask for information – Although most VPNs claim to sustain no logs, there is precedent for Virtual Private Network providers sharing the information of users with the authorities when asked for.

Which VPNs are Legal to Use?

As long as they are declared legal in your country, most VPNs are approved and legal to use. But, some may employ little suspicious business practice, which could put you at risk.

Watch out, especially for free Virtual Private Networks. These might look appealing from the onset, thanks to their free service. However, they can actually be giving out your details to third parties or sharing your bandwidth with other users.

Thus, it is essential you always use a VPN you are sure can, to the best of its ability to keep things private.

Where Is It Illegal To Use a Virtual Private Network?

Countries with a severe restrictive reputation around freedom of speech and civil rights are typically the ones that restrict or ban the use of VPN.

Citizens might try using VPNs to get around severe government supervision of online activities, or the restriction of certain online services or websites, for instance. In turn, the government tries to restrict or block their use.

Virtual Private Networks are illegal to use in Belarus, Iraq, and North Korea, and usage is strongly restricted in several other territories, including Russia, China, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.

Beyonce’s father invests into Nigerian music streaming startup MePlaylist.com

0

Beyoncé and Solange Knowles’ father, Mr Mathew Knowles, MBA, PhD, has invested into MePlaylist.com, a subscription and ads based On-Demand music streaming application founded by Olakunle Oladehin, a US-based Nigerian entrepreneur.

Mr Mathew Knowles’ invested into MePlaylist.com through his company Music World Entertainment Corporation joined Mr Michael Kay Kiladejo, Managing Partner of Music World International, and CEO of Track Record Entertainment LTD, UK to invest in MePlaylistTM.

“MePlaylistTM is Africa’s own answer to the popular music streaming platforms, but it takes streaming a step further by personalizing the experience for each consumer based on their consumption patterns and the technology available to them. This and the population of Africans both on the continent and in the diaspora is why I am proud to have invested in MePlaylistTM”, Knowles said in a statement.

MePlaylist.com presents music by African acts to the world and vice versa with unique royalty distribution models, multiple plan types and subscription currencies. The platform prioritizes commercialization efforts for African arts and as well reduces the gap artists and fans.

Investors Mathew Knowles and Michael Kiladejo

African consumers have also been left behind due to the high cost of subscribing to some platforms, other platforms have unresponsive and unexciting user interfaces and their catalogues are not as exhaustive as consumers would love. This has presented a challenge for content creators in Africa to earn suitable revenue from their work.

MePlaylistTM users will also be able to curate their own playlists and get followers to enjoy new music from all over the world.

According to Olakunle, “our focus is to put our users and their music consumption habits first; our platform has been designed with the understanding that people are mobile and constantly in need of new content, so from our interface to our catalogue options, we are making the MePlaylistTM experience the best in the market”.

According to a year-end report from the RIAA, revenues from streaming services grew nearly 20% in 2019 to $8.8 billion, accounting for 79.5% of all recorded music revenues, which means the streaming music services’ share of total music revenues is bigger than ever.

With the global music industry now worth about $19.1 billion, the African market is still largely untapped with its 1 billion-plus mostly young population and still accounts for a mere 2% of the global recorded-music sector and less than 1% of the royalties collected.

Artists on the platform include Diamond, Wizkid, Burna Boy or Tiwa Savage, Obesere and King Sunny Ade among others.

Microsoft Records 775% Increase in The Usage of Its Azure Cloud Services

0

Microsoft has this month recorded a 775 per cent increase in its Azure cloud services due to the ongoing CoronaVirus pandemic that has been continually accelerated cloud services usage.

Last week, through their Microsoft Azure page, Microsoft announced that following the global pandemic, its team is working to support its customers especially critical health and safety operations.

As of this month, most companies have resorted to working from home to embrace social distancing. Internet usage at the same time has surged. For example, Sony has lessened gamed download speeds to manage internet congestion. For instance, Microsoft has recorded a spike in Teams usage currently documenting more than 44 million users a day. Those users have generated over 900 million meeting and calling meetings for just a single week.

Further, Microsoft has recorded a 775 per cent increase in the usage of cloud services in regions that have enforced social distancing. North, West and South Europe. Other areas include UK South, France Central, Eastern parts of Asia, India South and Brazil have recorded high usage. Surprisingly, Microsoft is yet to record any downtimes due to the surge in usage.

Microsoft has increased the monitoring of services for certain key users. Noting that, “our top priority remains support for critical health. As well as safety organizations and ensuring remote workers stay up and running with the core functionality of Teams”.

Microsoft has as well implemented restrictions including limiting free offers, capping resources for new subscribers, and pausing some features of Teams. To help cope with the increased demand, there are plans to increase capacity.

“Concurrently, in this period we monitor support requests. And, if needed, encourage customers to consider alternative regions or alternative resource types, depending on their timeline and requirements. If the implementation of these efforts to alleviate demand is not sufficient, customers may experience intermittent deployment-related issues. Which if it happens,  impacted customers are informed via Azure Service Health.

Additionally, Microsoft is monitoring the impact of Xbox Live on its Azure capacity.

Safaricom pushes for M-PESA use to help reduce the spread of COVID-19

0

COVID-19 is a real threat to the human race and global economies as the pandemic continues to claim lives, livelihoods, and businesses every day, causing a frenzy and a global lockdown.

In a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Kenya and reduce infections, an initiative dubbed #Flattenthecurve, Safaricom is pushing for cashless payments via its mobile money platform M-PESA to allow Kenyans avoid the use of paper money.

With the ability to pay both offline and online retailers, Safaricom has zero-rated all person-to-person M-PESA transactions below Ksh1,000 allowing users to send any amount below Ksh1,000 for free over the next 90 (ninety) days. Safaricom says Ksh 1000 transfers represent 75% of all M-PESA transactions.

Working with CBK, Safaricom has also increased the daily M-PESA transaction limits from the current Ksh70,000 to Ksh150,000 allowing users to transact up to Ksh300,000 up from the current limit of Ksh140,000, and hold up to Ksh300,000 in their M-PESA wallets. Anyone with three M-PESA accounts can transact up to Ksh 900,000 in a day.

Last week, Safaricom announced it would powering payments in Matatus, Kenya’s public service vehicles in a bid to limit the spread of the Coronavirus from paper money. However, this is not the first time Safaricom is trying to do this. Matatu payments have proved to be the hardest to digitize in the country especially due to need for micropayments to cartels manning various bus stages in the city.

Safaricom has also partnered with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for monthly installments through M-PESA. The two firms seek to combat the spread of Coronavirus by providing the Scheme’s members with a cashless payment solution which helps them limit their movement and physical contact when making payments.

Due to the curfew and the governments request to have employees working from home, the move saves customers the trouble of traveling and queuing in a bank to make their NSSF payments by simply dialing *303*3#.

The partnership will primarily target NSSF Tenant Purchase Scheme members in Nairobi’s Nyayo estate Embakasi, Hazina, Kitusuru, Mountain View and Eldoret’s Kapsoya estate.

Besides payments, the new service also provides the Scheme members with the capability to reconcile and generate reports of their payments and standing.

The NSSF Tenant Purchase Scheme enables one to purchase a home over a period by making monthly installment payments to offset the cost. Besides installment payments, the Tenant Purchase Scheme equally serves NSSF Tenants and provides an avenue to make service charge payments too.

Starting March 2019, NSSF began the rollout of an entirely cashless system across its entire branch, providing for member benefit contribution through the Paybill 333300 or by dialing *303*1#.

In February 2020, NSSF extended its Haba Haba innovation to digital taxi operators, providing a one-stop-shop where digital taxi operators can make their member contributions, make NHIF contributions, get insurance and receive a daily, discounted data bundle. The solution is also available on *303*2#.

Going cashless is not just a Kenyan thing.

China’s central bank announced plans to destroy banknotes collected by hospitals, markets, and buses and issue freshly printed paper currency in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19. The government has also put some of the cash under quarantine for 14 days and disinfect it at high temperatures and with ultraviolet light before returning it to the public.

However, truth is there is no evidence that physical money, clothes or surfaces can help the virus spread.

According to the World Health Organization speaking to the Daily Telegraph : “it’s a good idea to use contactless payments” but that is not coronavirus-specific guidance, and that it has not issued any official warnings about cash.

Is this to say cash is great? No, because coronavirus varieties, can live on inanimate surfaces (pdf) including metal, paper, and plastic for hours to days. And they can survive on cardboard for a day, and on steel and plastic for up to three days. And laboratory-based simulations have shown (pdf) that other kinds of viruses can not only live on banknotes and coins for days and can also maintain their infectiousness. However, it is not enough for the germ to survive on an inanimate surface.

Joseph Eisenberg, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan added that for virus particles on a dollar bill to infect a human, they must follow the “primary route of infection.” That is if they are inhaled or coughed or sneezed into the air, or by contacting a virus particle with their hand and then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. Eisenberg adds that they are not sure if this virus can be transmitted to humans from inanimate surfaces of any kind.

“It may be possible that a person can get Covid-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads,” The US Centers for Disease Control said.

But like millions are asking for lockdowns, there are also cries that paper money should be banned for the time being when there is no tangible evidence that money in any form has ever been a source of any kind of infection as people are likely to catch the virus in a crowded theater, restaurant, supermarket than paper cash as the spread has happened more via personal contact, not by touching paper money.

The use of cashless forms of payment like M-PESA is great, but several governments will not be destroying banknotes and though users are asked to minimize the use of paper money, cash is still a legal tender.

The advantage of using M-PESA is that it offers customers a simple, efficient and safe way to settle offline and online purchases in an economy with few credit and debit cards. Cashless payments systems like M-PESA give users endless possibilities for convenient purchase and especially as movement has been limited in some counties across the country. M-PESA makes it easier for customers to pay offline and online without physical touch.

Because of quarantine, isolation, lockdown, and curfews, M-PESA and other digital payments are becoming the lifeline for homes and businesses as many businesses try to reach more people with basic supplies such as groceries, drinks, pharmaceutical drugs among others.

Though M-PESA merchant payments are growing by the day, the firm needs to make the system faster especially the Lipa Na M-Pesa option which can really be a nuisance at POS points, open up its new M-PESA one touch to Fuliza services and reduce SIM Swap fraud which is scaring people from using or storing money on in their M-PESA wallets.

Xiaomi Surpasses Huawei to Become World’s Third Largest Smartphone Brand

0

Xiaomi for the first time surpassed Huawei to become the third-largest smartphone brand as of February 2020 according to a report by Strategy Analytics.

Xiaomi made approximately 6 million shipments in January surpassing Huawei with 500 thousand units. Samsung maintained the lead position with 18.2 million units followed by Apple with 10.2 million units.

Oppo and Vivo took the fourth and fifth position with a shipment of 4 and 3.6 million units respectively.

By the end of 2019, Huawei was controlling roughly 17.7 per cent of the smartphone market share. The tech giant had shipped 251 million smartphone units while Samsung shipped 323 units and Apple 200 units.

However, the drop this was earlier predicted. After nearly narrowing the market share gap, Huawei has been in endless battles with the US government. The company has been on scrutiny and most companies were denied access to work with Huawei including losing its android license.

A number of US markets are prohibited to work with Huawei. With some presented with alternatives in place of Huawei equipment which has affected the brand’s general growth.

Earlier this month, Huawei shared its internal projection for 2020 among the group’s consumer electronics division which indicated a sharp drop in shipments. The company projected a drop of nearly 20 per cent representing over 50 million units.

Especially the new Hauwei devices P40 series come with a new operating system from the usual Android OS and iOS. Which there is a likelihood their market reception will be slower. Most users would prefer a number of users to review the products before they give it a try.

Lastly, the coronavirus pandemic has affected so many businesses including major events and launches that have been cancelled because of the pandemic. In this period, most businesses are performing poorly. Generally, global smartphone shipments have been falling considering 2020 is a slow year and people tend to use their phones for a long time.

The art and science of on-hold music – let’s face it everyone hates it

0

Silence is golden. Until it’s not.

When you keep your clients on hold at the end of the phone line, silence is anything else but golden. In the business world, silence is the sound of a lost client. The worst-case scenario is a client to call their insurance company or utility services provider and hear silence after the warm greeting message. Thank you for calling ABC Plumbing, our representatives are all on the line with other clients. Someone will be with you shortly. (blank) (silence) (creepy silence).

Music was created to fill the space. It works like a time killer. It mitigates the unpleasant no-man land of waiting for a friendly voice to pick up the phone and offer help. Or at least this is what it should be. But you can view on-hold music like an opportunity to engage your public. And prevent them from hanging up. Yes, at the start, on-hold music was a way to decrease the perceived waiting time, and get rid of awkward silence, but now companies use it to convey messages and connect with the public.

Why use on-hold music?

The traditional on-hold music is a flat instrumental track that plays on and on, until the customer gets sick of waiting and ends the call. The stereotypical tunes most companies use sound similar to musical wallpaper played in elevators. Muzak was the first company to cover popular songs using instruments only. Over the years, all workplaces and hotels played background mood music. But people became tired with wallpaper music and it wasn’t long until it faced backlash.

Even nowadays, hold music still has a negative connotation when companies opt for the same old instrumental tunes.

Dean Olsher, a New-York based music therapist ,states that hold music can negatively impact mental health because repetitive sounds have similar results to torture. Think about this the next time you visit a Sephora or Starbucks store because they have a short playlist they repeat over and over again. The poor employees.

But only because some companies fail miserably at using on-hold music, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it. The right tracks can calm people as they wait for one of your representatives to answer the phone. Engaging music can even encourage them to stay on the line for longer.

Don’t you dare play the same song one more time

Music has a highly personal nature, and it’s difficult for a company to pick the right tune for the hold time. It should be an innocent sound, but it has the power to provoke a strong emotion and response in the caller. Let’s picture the following scenario. One of your clients has to get in touch with your customer service daily, 7 days a week, 30 days a month. You play the same song for the hold time. It has 3 minutes, and the average client waits for 7 minutes. Sooner or later everyone will snap because they spend hours of their life listening to the same old tune. They’ll even start to hear it in their sleep.

But when choosing diverse, high-quality songs, you get another answer. You get them wanting to hear that song again. Have you ever get stuck with a melody in your mind, and you couldn’t wait to grab your phone and play it on YouTube? This is the response you should try to achieve in your clients.

Often, the problem with the on-hold music isn’t the sound itself, but the amount of time, people listen to it. The average individual spends 40 days of their life in a customer service phone queue. Should they listen to the same tune everyone plays? Or are you ready to bring something new and break the wheel?

Providing high-quality customer service is already hard enough without the agonising hold songs. How can you make it easy? Create a varied playlist with mesmerising on-hold songs royalty free websites offer. Your role is to shorten the waiting time, or at least create the impression it’s shorter.

I want thoughtful on-hold music

What music would you like to listen to when you wait for a call-canter operator to answer?

I want thoughtful songs.

Get creative with the on-hold music and embrace it as an opportunity to make your clients smile from the moment, they dial the number. Did you know that Ikea plays Abba songs, Admiral has a Star Wars soundtrack, and the Jamaican High Commission plays Bob Marley’s songs?

Listen to the sings before adding them to your hold playlist because you may end up with Elton John’s Rocket Man and “I think it’s going to be a long, long time…”. And you can bet your customers will immediately hang up the phone because no one wants to hear that they need to wait for minutes before someone answers their call.

And don’t interrupt the song with lines like Someone will be with you shortly. Let them emerge into listening to music.

Play it right

When you create the on-hold message, consider some aspects. Determine how frequently your clients need customer service, how long they’re put on hold, the caller demographic, and their gender. Bearing these things in mind, develop a plan to create an engaging experience. When the average waiting time is 6 minutes, it’s not ideal playing a 2 minutes tune on repeat.

Check the sound quality over the phone because not even Beyoncé sounds good on an old phone.

Some studies show that jazz and classical music relaxes people. Research also reveals that rap can fight depression, and pop music increases performance when exercising. But the truth is that the effect the musical genre has on the caller depends on their personal taste.

It’s wise to stay away from songs whose lyrics, people can interpret sarcastically or ironically. You may like Taylor Swift, but she isn’t the right artist to play in your clients’ ears when they wait for a plumber to fix their leaky pipes.

The bottom line is that on-hold music can calm your clients when picked right. But it requires extensive research and trial, to understand what tunes get the best response.

Huawei supports Kenya medical experts to share experiences with counterparts in China on COVID-19

Huawei is supporting Kenya medical experts to share experiences with counterparts in China on COVID-19 response.

Kenyan doctors and other health experts were able to use technology to share experiences with counterparts in China relating to the fight against the Coronavirus.

In a highly anticipated video conference on 18th March 2020, Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe and experts from the Ministry of Health exchanged views from Afya House with their counterparts in China to learn from their experiences in managing the response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

With video conference equipment supported by Huawei, this was the first time the Kenyan delegation held a video conference with the Chinese Ministry of Health and other experts  who have been handling the Coronavirus in Wuhan. The Chinese doctors were able to speak one to one not only with the Kenya doctors, but also with those in about 20 other African countries.

The Cabinet Secretary remarked: “This is an extremely important step in terms of knowledge sharing and it gave us a tremendous amount of knowledge which we believe will also go a long way to assisting our people.”

Stone He, CEO of Huawei Kenya, said: “Huawei is fully committed to supporting Kenya’s response efforts. I am delighted that the equipment was so useful; it is a good example of how technology can help with communications, collaboration and coordination which are a critical part of the response to the threat of COVD-19.”

The delegation in Kenya included more than 10 officials and experts. The purpose was to share information on the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic and discuss the best approaches for prevention and control.

Given the way the Chinese have been able to contain the virus in Wuhan, the sharing of knowledge thanks to technology is sure to benefit Kenya.

5 Best Apps You Can Use To Work From Home During The Pandemic

These are the best apps you can use to work home from home during the pandemic.

These are the apps you can use to work from home during the pandemic. Most people have been forced to work from home and that can be destabilizing however during these digital times you really don’t have to slow down operations. With this in mind, it’s important to consider the challenges of getting tasks done from the comfort of your own home – as well as any implications this might have.

Whether you’re an employer or employee these are the best ways to ensure that your employees are still working.

1. Serene

The biggest role Serene plays is blocking access to distracting websites and apps during work sessions while also silencing your phone. Separate studies find it takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds to get back on track after being distracted. This gives you an idea of how much time those email notifications can cost you throughout the day.

Serene asks you to set a daily goal, which can be broken up into multiple work sessions or tasks – as long as they all contribute to the day’s end goal. These sessions run for 20-60 minutes, another feature based on studies that show the human brain tens to start losing focus on a task after 20 minutes.

2. Slack

Slack is a massaging platform designed for teams and it’s the ideal communication tools for remote workers. Instant messaging is organised into channels, which team members can join and leave, as needed, so nobody receives messages or notifications irrelevant to them.

Team members can also chat outside of main topics in separate threads which prevents these messages from interfering with the most project-centric conversations.

3. Zoom

Group video meetings and voice calls are made easy with Zoom. Once again, there’s a free version of Zoom, which will be enough for a large chunk of smaller teams.

Crucially, paid versions only require hosts to pay a monthly fee rather than everyone who attends meetings. A host is someone who invites people team members to join meetings but up to 100 participants can join and you (or your company) will only need to upgrade to a paid version if meetings last longer than 40 minutes.

4. Chrome remote desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop allows you to access your computer securely from your phone, tablet or another computer.

Essentially, this means you can access your machine from anywhere, at any time without worrying about any security risks. You can access your computer by typing in an access URL into a web browser or download the mobile app for iOS and Andriod.

The other key function of Chrome Remote Desktop is to connect your device with fellow teammates. This means you can provide access to your computer and receive remote support, allowing colleagues to see your screen and control your computer – perfect for getting technical issues resolved.

5. Google calendar

While Google Calendar is a great free digital calendar, it doesn’t provide some of the advanced features remote workers typically need. A more feature-rich alternative is the aptly named Calendar, which connects all of your calendars into a single interface.

Aside from integrating all of your calendar apps, Calendar’s star feature is the way it handles meetings. Instead of arranging video chats or other meetings with arranging emails between multiple team members, Calendar allows anyone to choose and book meeting times during your availability hours while ensuring there are no conflicts with existing meetings or tasks.

Social Media Influencer Hospitalized After Licking Toilet And Getting Coronavirus

Social media influencer hospitalized licking toilet and getting coronavirus.

A California social media prankster claims he was hospitalized with the coronavirus — just days after posting a video of himself licking a toilet bowl for a nauseating online challenge.

The TikTok personality, known as Larz, reportedly posted footage of himself in a hospital bed on Sunday, according to the Daily Mail.

His account was suspended.

I tested positive for Coronavirus,” the 21-year-old from Beverly Hills tweeted on an account that has since been suspended, the outlet reported.

It comes just two days after the prankster, who goes by the social media handle GayShawnMendes, posted a video himself on Friday running his tongue across a public toilet as part of a bizarre — and widely criticized — “Coronavirus Challenge” on social media.

Mainly on TikTok.

The craze — seen mainly on TikTok, a video-sharing platform — spurs users to post footage of themselves licking everything from toilets to grocery store produce.

It wasn’t clear whether Larz’s apparent infection was linked to the stunt.

It comes as the number of infected Americans soared past 55,500 as of Wednesday afternoon, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The virus has also caused more than 800 deaths across the country.

The social media influencer has previously appeared on the Dr. Phil show, where he drew criticism for boasting about how he’d licked tubs of ice cream before putting them back in store freezers, and claimed he made “lots of money” from his online following.

Apple extends free trials for its pro creative apps

Apple will be temporarily extending free trials on the Final Cut Pro X, a video editing software, and Logic Pro X a music production suite from the previous 30 days to 90 days. A move that will give potential customers with limited access to also try out the software.

The extension is currently available for the Final Cut Pro X. And will be rolled out to the Logic Pro X in the coming days.

Following the current COVID-19 pandemic, there have been so many bottlenecks surrounding people, companies and businesses. Especially due to social distancing, most people are working from home or on self-quarantine. Which means businesses are slow or not in operation at all.

Apple joins other software companies that have resorted to extending free trials and offers on their products. For instance, Agora services, offering financial institutions cloud-based services have waived their set up fee and plans to defer payments for three months during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another case is Avid, which is issuing a limited number of free 90-day licences for Pro Tools.

This has been an ongoing trend among most companies especially service providers.

According to an Apple spokesperson, the company hopes the promotion will  greatly benefit creative Mac users,  especially to those students, who pride in creating and learning in new environments…”

At the moment, the Logic Pro X retails for $199.99 while the Final Cut Pro X goes for $299.99. Apple says that the extended trial is already live for Final Cur Pro X. Which will be honoured for recent downloads, while Logic Pro X should gain the extended trial in the coming days. However, they haven’t mentioned when exactly the trials will end.

How To Spot Fake News On WhatsApp

How do you spot fake news on WhatsApp?

In these times of Covid-19 where every person has some information about the virus, you need to be super weary about who you believe and where you source your news from. WhatsApp is one of the most misused social platforms because everyone tends to forward every bit of information they get. You need to be able to spot fake news and ask yourself relevant questions before spreading any information you get from your networks.

These are some relevant steps you should take to help reduce the spread of false information on WhatsApp.

1. Who wrote it?

Many fake messages (especially forwarded ones) don’t say who wrote the message. If we don’t know who wrote it, how can we trust it?

If you aren’t sure who wrote the message or where its claims come from – be careful.

Before you share: Ask the sender who the author and source is, and double-check the facts.

2. Can I verify the claims?

Many fake messages don’t give sources for their claims, or use unreliable sources like hoax news sites. Some fakes say they come from a trusted source, such as a real news site – but they’re lying.

If you aren’t sure a claim is backed up by a trusted source – be careful.

Before you share: Ask the sender if the same claim has been reported on any trusted news sites or other sources, and make sure these aren’t hoax sites. Even then, double-check the facts.

3. Does the info make me scared or angry?

Many fake messages try to make us scared or angry about something. They can be shocking claims about crime or kidnapping, about people from a different country or racial group, or about new government policies.

If a message makes scary or shocking claims – be careful.

Before you share: Ask yourself if the message is playing on people’s fears or prejudices, and double-check the facts.

4. Does it include shocking pictures, video or audio?

Many fake messages use pictures, video or audio to trick us. These could be edited to be misleading. They could also be taken from a different event in another time or place.

If a message includes shocking pictures, video or audio – be careful.

Before you share: Check if the media has been edited, and double-check to see if it’s actually from a previous event or different place.

5. Am I sure this is not a hoax?

Many fake messages can be checked out online. You can search reliable news sites or fact-checking websites such as Citizen.com, BBC, KTN news etc. Always verify your information before sending anything out because you don’t want to be the reason why someone believes that drinking garlic water will cure Corona.

So please, tell your aunties and uncles to stop sharing everything they get from their friends. Always correct their information without arguing and send them links to sites where they can get relevant and credible information.

How 5G can help the fight against Coronavirus – Deloitte

0

5G can enhance the effectiveness of pandemic prevention and treatment, and drive the digital transformation of healthcare systems in response to major public emergencies, such as the current pandemic of COVID-19, a newly released Deloitte report suggests.

The white paper titled, “Combating COVID-19 with 5G: Opportunities to improve public health systems,” was produced in collaboration with Huawei. During the outbreak in China, telecommunications operators collaborated with Huawei to rapidly set up a specific 5G network dedicated to COVID-19 treatment hospitals.

The white paper analyses examples of COVID-19 control and treatment measures in China and identified challenges that face epidemic management in terms of monitoring, quarantine and treatment.

Amongst its findings, the whitepaper notes that the effectiveness of communication and data exchange has been essential in screening for infected individuals and controlling the outbreak. This by enabling thermal imaging, continuous remote monitoring and diagnoses during patient transfer.

The research also highlighted the need to build and upgrade public health emergency response mechanisms, through which governments are able to make right decisions promptly and allocate resources more effectively.

In this regard, 5G can also promote collaboration by enabling connectivity, maintaining effective communication among hospitals, and enable medical data and reference sharing between hospitals and scientific research institutions, especially “in the rapid increases in data volume and mounting demand for remote and HD-video based treatment” scenario.

In addition, the report indicates that the success of 5G applications in the public health domain could also inspire new business models in other sectors. It finds as a result of 5G features such as high speed connection, high reliability and low latency, the healthcare system has benefited from improved response times, patient monitoring, data collection and analytics, remote collaboration and resource allocation. It also sets an example for digitalised, data driven and Cloud-based innovative major public emergency response platforms.

How To Use Social Media To Your Advantage During COVID-19

How do you use social media during COVID-19?

There are many businesses that have been greatly affected by COVID-19 and this is when many businesses have realized that an online presence is very important. Transitioning from the traditional way of managing your business to a digital way can be very challenging and almost impossible at the same time.

However there are plenty of things you can do to keep up your brand awareness and perhaps brighten someone’s day with your content!

Here are some of our top tips for things you should and shouldn’t be doing with your business’ social media for the time being.

1. Keep your customers up to date

There’s nothing worse than seeing fake news on social media, or things that are no longer relevant or true. It’s so important to make sure your business’ content is kept up to date with the latest news, and what’s going on. This is always key when it comes to social media, but it is even more important during the current situation with frequent changes and updates to the government’s regulations. As things continue to change and impact your business, make sure you keep your followers and customers up to date, whether that’s changes to your services, reductions in working hours, or even just letting them know what steps you’re taking to keep your employees safe.

2. How can your business be useful?

So many businesses up and down the country have had to completely stop trading and can no longer generate income. If you can continue trading and offering your services, please make sure you are being sensitive about it, be aware of others and be kind. It’s also important not to profiteer off the current situation, it can be tempting to try and capitalise on a sudden surge in demand for your services but this is a short term win and businesses seen to be doing this will feel the repercussions long after Covid-19 is under control. Companies such as Safaricom have completely changed their branding to “Safaricom stay safe” which is a really smart way of letting people know that they are not ignoring the situation.

3. Focus on brand love instead of just selling service

Instead, try to find a way that you and your company can help, in the community and offer your support. You can utilise this for your social media content to offer out your support and let people know the things you’re doing instead of running the business as normal. People can get really mad when all you’re doing is selling services and never mentioning the current situation at hand. This is why it is super important to break off creating content around selling and do more educative posts probably about your products or anything else that is fun and engaging.

4. Brush Up on Your Knowledge

While the world is collectively slowing down and adjusting to our new normal, it’s an ideal time to closely look at your social media efforts, and review or redefine your online marketing strategy. It’ll keep you busy and give you a sense of direction in these crazy days and will give you a competitive edge once normality resumes!

Why Facebook Ad Approvals Will Be Delayed Due To Covid-19 Impacts

Facebook ad approvals will be delayed due to covid-19 impacts.

Facebook shutdown their offices and asked their staff to work from home amid the COVID-19 outbreak. This meant that Facebook workers who operate on a contract basis are not able to work which has reduced Facebook’s capacity in several areas.

Facebook uses contractors for content moderation, and the company warned earlier in the week that this could lead to some delays and errors as it increases its reliance on automated systems to detect and remove rule violating posts.

So how has this affected Facebook Ads?

But Facebook’s contractors also conduct ad reviews, which, Facebook says, also means that there may be some delays in ad approvals, and incorrectly rejected ads due to the machines stepping in.

As per Facebook:

We use a combination of people and technology to review ads on Facebook and Instagram, and our automated systems already play a big role in that process. Now with a reduced and remote workforce, we’re relying on automated technology even more.

Facebook says that this could mean:

  • Delayed review for ads and commerce listings
  • An increase in ads being incorrectly disapproved
  • Delayed or reduced appeals
  • More limited availability of Facebook in-stream ads and lower delivery

That’s not ideal, especially as advertisers look to alternate ways to reach potential customers and keep their revenues flowing amid the lockdowns.

If you want to limit any potential impacts to your Facebook ads, Facebook Trust and Integrity Team Leader Rob Leathern advises that brands could look to extend the delivery period of their best performing ads instead of creating new ones – as new campaigns will, of course, be subject to a fresh review.

Facebook also notes that these changes will also cause delays in approvals for its monetized content options:

All monetized content goes through brand safety reviews. This includes Instant Articles and videos with in-stream ads. Since our ability to review new content is now limited, we won’t be able to approve all content for monetization. We’re working on how to support partners at this time.

This could be a big point of note for video creators who are looking to generate revenue from Facebook.

Of course, changes are being implemented across the board, and we’re all working to understand this new landscape, and how we can navigate it and minimize its many impacts. The changes to Facebook’s process are not ideal, but as with everything, we need to exercise a level of understanding and patience as we fill in the gaps and keep things churning through.

This will greatly affect e-commerce businesses that are looking to start fresh campaigns. However, if you plan yourself well enough and create your ads ahead of time you will be able to still have ads running.

54gene Launches a $500K COVID-19 Testing Fund to Beef Up Coronavirus Testing in Nigeria

0

54gene, the Nigerian genomics research, services, and development startup has launched a $500,000 Nigeria COVID-19 Testing Fund to expand Coronavirus testing facilities in the country.

54gene, which recently raised a $4.5M to build the world’s first African DNA biobank, will use fund to support the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC] to tackle the current challenges around testing for COVID-19 in Nigeria. The firm donated $150,000 and secured an additional $350,000 from several partners including Union Bank.

Dr Abasi Ene-Obong, CEO 54gene says, “With the Nigeria COVID-19 Testing Fund, we are working in sync with the NCDC to make Nigeria’s public health an absolute priority during this global pandemic, which has left thousands dead or fighting for their lives. We are extremely ambitious in our mission to expand the testing capacity for Nigeria, and expect to increase the present rate by at least 10X in the coming weeks. In order to contain the spread of COVID-19, it is essential for us to know who has the disease, so we can put in place effective measures around quarantining confirmed cases.

The money raised will help increase COVID-19 testing capacity in the country by up to 1,000 additional tests a day, by buying testing instruments and the required biosafety materials such as biosafety cabinets and personal protective equipment needed to keep frontline healthcare workers safe.

Several Nigerian institutions look to raise enough to accelerate and expand to up to 5,000 tests per day to help minimize the spread of the infection. The team is also making a call for a COVID-19 workforce trained in using qPCR instruments and other molecular diagnostics methods. The monies raised will be channelled towards recruiting these people for a period of time to support existing public laboratories.

54gene, NDC and other stakeholders expect to deploy the fund within days, purchasing vital testing equipment, to be used by medical professionals. All equipment will be installed in public hospitals and laboratories across Nigeria, and will remain in situ once the current COVID-19 pandemic subsides, to be used by medical researchers and clinicians in case of any future outbreaks.

The fund will also be used for training and support to medical professionals/ personnel and volunteers working in coronavirus testing sites across the country, ensuring the mass roll out of effective and robust testing for tens of thousands more Nigerians.

Nigeria has recorded 51 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and has imposed flight and travel restrictions, as well as producing stringent guidelines for mass gatherings and self-isolation. Support is needed.

“This is the kind of support we need. Identify a problem, run with it and include a sustainability plan in your solution. We are very grateful for this new partnership with 54gene at a critical point in our health security,” said Director General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu.

The medical data storage platform allows patients to store their health records such as medication, disease history among others in real-time giving access to both the patients, their doctors and health service providers . With the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, there is need for a centralized health management system to enable people to update their own records, anytime, anywhere, in multi formats.

Corona infections are growing and monitoring the growth in real-time is necessary. By collecting user-generated information from millions of users across multiple geographic locations the platform allows for sufficient data analysis in support of the global efforts to curb the disease.

“Afya Rekod comes at a crucial time when the world is experiencing one of the biggest pandemics of its generations and we need to monitor the movement and evolution of the virus very closely to determine the changing nature of symptoms among other things.” further stated Kamara.

The growing digitization of health care at a time when the world is required to isolate provides an unprecedented opportunity for the world to come together and unite in efforts.

Afya Rekod is currently in discussions with various entities across governments and developing partners to explore how their efforts can be accelerated urgently for Covid 19.

The platform presents a unique ability to address critical emerging health needs as it has a differentiated product that is centered around the most important entity in a health equation, an individual/a patient which presents a rapidly growing opportunity to launch an AI engine that solves and help the world prevent and monitor the spread of global pandemics like Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19).
