Google launches Second Android 11 Developer Preview

Google has launched the second Android 11 developer preview that rolled out on Friday. The preview comes with hinge angle detection support, call screening improvements and new ops in the Neural Networks API.

The preview comes nearly a month after the first preview was released. In this new release,  Google will be pushing an over-the-air (OTA) update. The new preview includes a preview SDK with system images for the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3. And Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL. And an additional official Android Emulator.

The second preview comes a set of features that include a 5G state API to see if a user is currently on a 5G network.

The new features give better support for foldable devices. It comes  with a new API that can read data from a hinge-angle sensor so that apps can adapt to the angle of the hinge. There also are new APIs for screening robocalls and support for variable refresh rates.

For developers who use neural networks in their apps, Android  11 will include a new “hard swish-op” function that will enable faster and more accurate training for on-device models.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has unveiled a $1M grant-information hub to fight coronavirus rumours. The WhatsApp Coronavirus Information Hub is in partnership with WHO, UNICEF, and UNDP who will together offer simple and actionable guidance, general tips and resources for users around the world to be better informed about the virus.

WhatsApp has more than 2 billion users who are at high risk of getting fake news. The platform continues to face issues with how it is used to spread false information worldwide.

The Information Hub will also reduce the spread of fake news concerning the virus. Internet users are using this pandemic to spread fear to a majority of social media users. The fake news revolves around unverified home remedies to tackle the virus,  fake advisories asking people to avoid foods such as ice cream and spicy foods or drinking lemon water to taking hot chilli to kill the virus.

The partners are working on messaging for people around the world to use directly. The hotlines will provide information on the WhatsApp Corona Virus Information Hub.

The messaging firm said it is also donating $1 million to the Poynter Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). The $1 million grant will help in fact-checking for the #CoronaVirusFacts Alliance. Which spans more than 100 local organizations in at least 45 countries.

“We are happy to partner with the Poynter Institute to help grow the amount of fact-checking organizations on WhatsApp and to support their life-saving work to debunk rumours. We will also continue to work directly with health ministries around the world for them to provide updates right within WhatsApp,” said Will Cathcart,  Head of WhatsApp, in a statement.

In a statement, Baybars Orsak, Director of IFCN, said, “the timely donation from WhatsApp will help the fact-checks published by the CoronaVirusFacts Alliance to reach wider audiences and, in consequence, help people sort facts from fiction during this avalanche of information that WHO called an ‘infodemic.’”

Mastercard recently launched its first 2020 Girls4Tech programme in Kenya attended by 68 girls aged between nine and 12. Girls4Tech attendees will be encouraged to consider careers in science and technology through hands-on activities.

Though the country is currently ranked 109th out of 153 countries in the 2020 Global Gender Gap Report and women represent only a third of university students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses, the growing demand for STEM skills in Kenya’s workforce means increased opportunities for women in future.

The hands-on, inquiry-based STEM program incorporates Mastercard’s deep expertise in payments technology and innovation. Mastercard employees serve as mentors and role models and guide participants through practical and fun exercises covering topics such as encryption, fraud detection, data analysis, digital convergence, cybersecurity and AI.

It also emphasizes important skills such as collaboration, creativity and communication to enable young girls to apply their technical knowledge to solve real-world challenges.

Major companies in Kenya have taken the initiative to waive their transactions in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Just this week,  major telcos in Kenya scrapped off transaction charges from person to person transactions below 1000 to minimize the chances of spreading the virus in Kenya.

This announcement comes after a meeting hosted by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday. That brought together banking industry players. KCB has set aside  KShs. 30 billion in a stimulus fund for onward lending to KCB M-PESA customers during the next 90 days.

KCB has more than 22 million customers who borrowed KShs.212 billion in 2019 on its KCB-MPESA mobile lending platform. Which more customers are set to benefit from the plan.

The fund will allow for higher borrowing limits for qualifying customers and extended repayment periods for borrowers with existing facilities.

Further, the bank and Safaricom will allow customers blacklisted at the Credit Reference Bureaus (CRBs) but have since cleared their facility.

“We shall open credit limits to those customers listed for defaulting on small amounts. But to those who are now repaying their loans. Customers who need relief will get in touch with us to work out the respective support areas,” said Mr. Oigara.

Other relief measures available to individual customers, and small business owners will include renegotiations of the loan contracts. This will either allow repayment postponement or extending the repayment periods up to one year. The Bank will foot the legal costs associated with loan restructuring.

“We stand with Kenyans and all our customers at this time as our country and the world grapples with the pandemic. Our firm priority remains ensuring that our employees, customers, business partners and the entire population remains safe and free from the virus,” said KCB Group CEO and MD Joshua Oigara.

“We have a role to continue supporting the economy and stimulating growth. The best remedy as our economy starts to slow down is to support our customers to get along with their lives and to protect jobs by providing additional lending. We have been in crises before, but if we pull together, even in this environment, we will get the solutions Kenya needs” he added.

These measures are additional to the zero-rating of the bank to mobile and mobile to bank transactions. In order to increase the usage of digital channels as opposed to cash. This will reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.

“Our goal remains ensuring that our customers and our nation comes out of this storm strong together. To continue the work of nation-building. This is the time to stand shoulder to shoulder. To ensure that no one is left behind when all this is over” said Mr. Oigara.

Ecobank Group has announced the 2020 edition of fintech challenge which will take place in Togo where  All Finalists will be inducted as Ecobank Fintech Fellows. The fair consists of a business boot camp followed by an Awards and Innovation Fair.

the fair Launched in 2017, it has run two editions and is now on its third edition. This year fair will be held at the headquarters of the Ecobank Group in Lomé, Togo in June 2020.

 Ecobank fintech challenge submissions are ongoing and they take submissions from all start-ups and developers in any of Africa’s 54 countries.  The Fintech Challenge gives African start-ups the opportunity to promote their fintech solutions. And potentially partner with Ecobank to roll-out their solutions across Ecobank’s 33 markets in Africa as well as France.

the Challenge is in partnership with the advisory firm Konfidants. A move supported by several partners across Africa and globally. Applications for the competition will close on the 12th of April, 2020.

  • Multinational product roll-out: an opportunity to pursue integration with Ecobank and potentially launch products in Ecobank’s Pan African footprint
  • Service provider partnerships. Ecobank may select start-ups as a pan-African service partner within the bank’s ecosystem.
  • Access to Ecobank’s Pan-African Banking Sandbox. Fellows will earn access to Ecobank’s APIs to test and improve their products for the pan-African market.

Samsung Galaxy A41 Unveiled With an Improved 48 MP Triple Camera

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy A41 series and it comes with an improved triple camera adding to other Samsung A series mid-rangers a successor of the A40 series. The device according to the leaks will be out by June 2020.

The leaks first appeared on Geekbench, one of the prolific device leakers. According to Geekbench,  the Samsung Galaxy A41 will run on Android 10 OS out of the box with the company’s One UI 2.0 skin baked on top of it.

Galaxy A41 Specifications

Samsung Galaxy A41 features a 6.1-inch full-HD+ Infinity-U Super AMOLED display with 20:9 aspect ratio and 89 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The screen has a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and 422 ppi pixel density.

It comes with a  25MP f/22 selfie camera inside the notch. At the back, It houses a 48-megapixel + 8MP + 5MP  a triple camera setup. The camera encompasses such features as Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Face detection and Touch to focus.

The Galaxy A41 flaunts an Infinity-U Display design with a waterdrop notch, much like its predecessor. Also comes in three different colour variations: Black, Blue and White.

It also comes with a  rear-panel design from the Galaxy A51 and is an IP68-rated phone, which means it is dust and waterproof

The Galaxy A41 comes equipped with a 3,500mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging. The phone also has an in-display fingerprint sensor for authentication. Connectivity is handled by 4G LTE as well as NFC for contactless payments.

It comes paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage and runs on the MediaTek Helio P65. The phone is powered by Octa-core (2 GHz, Dual-core, Cortex A75 + 2 GHz, Hexa Core, Cortex A55) processor. It operates on the MediaTek Helio P65 Chipset.

However, there is no further mention of price and global availability. The leaks didn’t mention any expandable storage space.

Your digital presence to raise capital online will become your main and most important presence. This should not be mistaken for an appeal to save a business from closure but as a preparation to raise capital, by allocating a percentage of equity shares for investment by the crowd online. 

You have less risk with equity financing because you will have no fixed monthly loan payments to make, especially with the current negative cash flow during this pandemic and into its aftermath. However, the risky side of it is that equity investors should not expect to receive an immediate return for their investment as they have a long-term view and face the possibility of losing their money if the business fails.

We would advise by starting off with asking friends and family to make an equity investment to finance your company and caution them to only invest what they can afford to lose.

Retaining your retail investors 

Normally, investors would be skeptical during a pandemic such as coronavirus, but a savvy investor knows that after each crisis, the market not only rebounds but also rises to new heights. Meaning the hardest hit sectors may offer the most potential to bounce back.

Make that clear to the retail investor and those who may be your loyal customer or client. Overtime investors can win owning well-managed businesses that provide products and services that consumers need and love. 

One thing is clear: there will likely be volatile markets over the next few weeks and probably months, and you have to remind your investors that you are a great business that has long-term prospects and are currently open to investments.

Microsoft has announced that it will avail its hub for teamwork in Office 365, Microsoft Teams, for free to the public to enable remote working with COVID-19 continuing to impact people and countries around the world. Many companies have been in the recent day’s are exploring remote work options. 

In a statement announcing the free service, Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365 said, “At Microsoft, our top concern is the wellbeing of our employees and supporting our customers in dealing with business impact during these challenging times. By making Teams available to as many people as possible, we hope that we can support public health and safety by making remote work even easier.”

Microsoft Teams which is Part of Office 365 is a chat-based collaboration tool that provides global, remote, and dispersed teams with the ability to work together and share information via a common space.  with teams, users are able to utilize features like document collaboration, one-on-one chat, team chat, and more.

Facebook is taking the challenge to keep people and small businesses safe and informed by making sure everyone has accurate information. The company is focusing on supporting global health experts and stopping misinformation during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“These are unprecedented times, making things incredibly challenging for us all. Especially the small businesses which are the lifeblood of our economies. In EMEA, we know that the measures being put in place to keep everyone in our communities safe. Which is particularly challenging for smaller businesses. Especially those who rely on custom in their local area. However, the grants and ad credits are eligible for small businesses in over 30 countries where Facebook has operations in.

Keroche Breweries to Pay Half a Billion to Lift Urgency Notice by KRA

The High Court has ordered Keroche Breweries Limited to pay Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) KShs500Million for the Authority to lift the agency notice issued to the company’s banks. The notice was to enable KRA to recover Kshs 9.1 Billion following the orders given by the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT) on 9th March 2020.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) was allowed to collect over Sh9 billion from Keroche Breweries after winning six appeal cases filed by the firm. In the three appeals before Tax Appeals Tribunal. The contention was in the manufacturing process of Vienna Ice Brand of Vodka. Which the brewer argued that  Ice brand of Vodka was produced by diluting Crescent Vodka, a process that did not amount to manufacturing.

Later on, Friday  13th, Keroche Industries through the court secured temporary orders stopping the taxman from recovering Sh9.1 billion in taxes from its accounts. The court certified Keroche’s application as urgent and the brewery was issued with a temporary stay of the tribunals’ order pending the hearing and determination of the application for stay.

The court further ordered that Keroche’s application for a stay mentioned yesterday on 16th March 2020. During the mention, KRA requested to be heard in opposition to the application for stay.

The  court further made the following orders; 

  1. There shall be a stay of further enforcement of any collection of taxes ensuing from the decision of TAT in Tax Appeal Tribunal, Tax Appeal Number 137 of 2017as consolidated with TAT number 138 and 139 of 2017 and Tax Appeal number 214 of 2015 as consolidated with TAT number 38 of 2017 and 97 of 2017
  1. The stay shall be on condition that the appellant pays KShs500Million within the next 30days in default of which the order of stay shall lapse without any further order.
  2. The TAT was directed to furnish the typed copies of the judgement to all the parties within 48 hours and typed proceedings within seven (7) days from the day of the court hearing.
  3. The appellant was also ordered to file and serve its record of appeal within 30 days from the date of the court hearing.
  4. The order shall apply to Tax APPEAL NO. E012 of 2020 and tax appeal number EO13 of 2020.
