Local Telcos Waive Fees for Transactions Below Ksh1000

Three Kenyan Telcos Safaricom, Airtel and Telcom have waived transaction fees for customers across all their networks The telcos have waived fees on their mobile money transfer services M-Pesa, T-Kash and Airtel Money for transactions below Ksh1,000 ($10). Airtel went a step ahead to waive all transactions on mobile money across all bands using Airtel money.

The agreement was reached during a meeting with the Central Bank of Kenya Governor, Dr Patrick Njoroge, he encouraged telcos and all industry players to support the use of mobile money and other forms of cashless payments. The aim herein is to minimize the use of physical cash in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virus spreads from person-to-person between people who are in close contact with one another. Respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths. Through noses of nearby people or be inhaled into the lungs.

All the three telcos have waived all person to person transactions below ksh1000 will be zero-rated.

In a company statement, Telcom announced that the daily T-Kash limit per transaction increases from KSh70,000 to KSh150,000, with the daily sending limit being reviewed upwards from KSh140,000 to KSh300,000. More importantly, any transactions between KSh50,000 up to KSh300,000 will attract a rate of KSh100. All other fees remain unchanged.

While on Safaricom’s end, the Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph noted that “This means that from today Tuesday 17th March. M-Pesa users will be able to send any amount below Ksh1,000 for free over the next 90 (ninety) days,”

To add on, the CBK has also approved the increase of daily M-Pesa transactions limit from the current Sh70,000 limit to Sh150,000 for SMEs. Kenyans will also be able to transact up to 300,000from the current limit of Sh140,000. Customers will also now access an increased wallet limit of KSh 300,000 from KSh 100,000.

Airtel has further waived transactions for all the bands for the next 90 days. Increased daily transaction limit from Ksh70,000 to Ksh150,000. Daily limit from 140,000 to Ksh300,000.

The telco’s in partnership with the government. Have set up atoll free line 719 where customers can access information and updates on COVID-19. A move that will enable Kenyans has a better understanding and knowledge on how to prevent the spread of the virus. As well as manage suspected cases.

Uber will compensate drivers affected by COVID-19, which will be based on their average daily earnings over the last six months. Huawei is set to launch the P40 series the Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, and Huawei P40 Pro Premium Edition on the 26th of this month . The devices will be launched in an online-only event following the growing cases of the coronavirus pandemic.

Apple is Working on a Fitness App For iPhone Users

Apple is working on a new app for the iPhone codenamed “Seymour.” An app that will guide users through workout routines on their Watches and iPhones.

The app will provide guidance on a range of workout options and is connected to both the iPhone and Apple Watch. According to MacRumors. It includes a wide range of activity types from cycling to strength training. Users may be able to follow along with downloadable videos.

The app would be compelling for people who don’t know how to work out or want to get a workout in when they’re away from the gym, like in a hotel room during a business trip.

It’s set to launch in iOS 14 and the next version of the Apple Watch software. It typically announces its big new iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch updates in June before releasing them to everyone’s devices in September.

Seemingly, the company appears to be providing the workouts through its fitness app for free. As there are no in-app purchases or costs associated with the content at this time.

With the fitness app, users may be able to download fitness videos that cover a range of different workout options and activities. Jumia Nigeria has delisted 390 products belonging to 168 sellers of hand sanitizer and face masks from its platform amid price hikes due to the ongoing coronavirus.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) issued a warning to sellers engaged in an arbitrary increase in prices of protective and hygiene products in the wake of the recent outbreak of coronavirus. Following the rise in the number of victims across the globe. Sellers have taken advantage to increase product prices for consumers.

Especially on sanitizers and hygiene products. Which have been hugely recommended for people to use in on a daily basis to curb the spreading of the virus. Consumers have continued to surge the prices.

The FCCPC through the commission chief Executive Officer Babatunde Irukera. And Chairwoman, Nigeria and Head of Institutional Affairs, Jumia Group, Juliet Anammah. They on February 29, issued a warning to suppliers and retailers against increasing the prices of safety and protective apparel. For instance, face masks and latex gloves, as well as personal hygiene products including sanitizers and anti-bacterial wipes.

The statement further noted that “This unusual and inordinate practice of unreasonably increasing the price of these (protective and hygiene) products in an indiscriminate manner. On account of the national public health concern. It violates both moral codes and extant law,” added Babatunde.

Technology firm SWVL has today announced the appointment of Dip Patel as its General Manager in Kenya. In a move to add greater expertise and a deeper knowledge of the technology start-up space in the country.

Patel brings broad experience from the vibrant technology start-up space in Nairobi. Until his appointment at SWVL, he was the Head of Growth at Apollo Agriculture. Apollo is a Kenyan technology company that helps small-scale farmers maximize their profits.

Newtown Partners, a South African venture capital firm and logistics firm Imperial, have launched a corporate venture capital (CVC) fund to invest startups in the logistics industry, with an initial investment of $20 million.

Newtown Partners, founded in 2014 on the set of Dragon’s Den by Vinny Lingham and Llew Claasen, with investments in Bloomable, Civic, SweepSouth, and defunct Wala, will manage the fund focused on high-growth startups in the supply chain and logistics sector.

As an early-stage venture capital firm, Newtown Partners will support Imperial’s strategic investment in the key areas set to disrupt its business in the next five to 10 years.

“This programme will contribute to the long-term success of the organisation by identifying and leveraging startups deploying emerging technologies and business models in key geographical and logistics service areas,” says Vinny Lingham, co-founder and General Partner of Newtown Partners.
