Kenya Launches New Portal For Better Resource Allocation In Its 47 Counties

0

dataKenya’s National Taxpayers Association Monday launched a data portal aimed at collecting satellite information about counties for better resource allocation.

The portal developed by LocateIT Ltd and funded by Pact will map and track all natural resources available in counties and their priority needs. It will also capture county’s different priority needs as collected from residents using mobile phones across the country’s 47 counties.

Earlier on, the portal was piloted in Kakamega County where allocation of the Constituency Development Fund is guided by satellite information. using smartphones and desktops, the portal has up-to-date county maps, information on state of natural resources, public infrastructure, economic activities and social amenities.

NTA National Co-ordinator Martin Napisa told the Business Daily that,“The numerous cases where millions of shillings are being allocated to non-priority areas such as cars and governors’ housing indicate that devolution can only make sense if counties have timely information,”

The portal is expected to help counties develop independent strategic plans, increase public participation and boost county revenue collection.  Details like school enrolment, staffing, physical facilities as well as the state of sanitation in a particular institution can also be captured.

Users upload their needs into the web portal depending on their priorities such as water, roads, sanitation, health, energy, education, agriculture, environment and security among others.

The ministry of Finance in Uganda has received a directive from the government, ordering them to revise a law regulating financial institutions to include Islamic banking and mobile money transactions which are proving to be ever more popular. “The government has decided to increase on the monitoring terms of this service since the telecommunications companies are transacting large sums of money from the public,” said Rosemary Namayanja,Uganda’s  Minister of Information

The minister added that the introduction of Islamic banking was appropriate as it would meet both local and foreign request to the Bank of Uganda to come up with a good environment for Islamic Banking business.

Ad Dynamo, leading SA advertising network set to launch in Kenya

0

Ad-DynamoSouth African-based advertising network, Ad Dynamo, has announced its plans to launch in Kenya by September this year, after it signed up MSN Kenya as its exclusive publisher in the East African country.

“We are pleased to offer advertisers in Kenya a compelling solution that provides convenience, scale of reach, and of course the customer service that we’ve become legendary for”, said Sean Riley, Ad Dynamo CEO.

Claiming to be South Africa’s and Nigeria’s largest ad network alternative to Google, Ad Dynamo looks to launch its services in Kenya that include: mobile ad network, online ad network, Twitter advertising through sponsored tweets (where celebrities are paid to promote a brand) and Facebook advertising.

It was however interesting to note that the company has only 3,730 likes on its Facebook page and 2,450 followers on its Twitter account. It will be interesting to watch the strategy the company uses in promoting other brands on social media based on these numbers.

Ad Dynamo said that Kenyan publishers will enjoy a faster payment than any rival ad network worldwide, considering its offers its very own Visa Debit Card as a means of receiving income.

Back in 2011, Ad Dynamo launched a service dubbed Ad Dynamo Social, a product that allows advertisers to reach customers on the Facebook platform. The product is integrated with Facebook’s API, allowing advertisers worldwide to target specific audiences within specific locations and demographics.

Nokia & Airtel Launch Free Access To Facebook To Target East Africa’s Growing Youth Market

0

FACEBOOKAirtel  and Nokia have introduced free access to Facebook on Asha 501 in a move targeting the socially active youth in the region.

Nokia aims to grow the Asha user base, while Airtel its data users.

According to Nokia General Manager for East Africa, Bruce Howe, the partnership will see Airtel subscribers who purchase the new Nokia Asha 501 smartphone enjoy free access to Facebook for three months. The zero rated Facebook access, which needs to happen via the Facebook application, will start from the first access to Facebook from the Nokia Asha 501.

“The growth of Facebook in East Africa continues to be significant, especially amongst the youth. As a company we see the enormous opportunity in the youth market and we are committed to providing innovative products and added value in this space,” said Howe.

Launched last month Nokia Asha 501 is retailing at Shs7,999, UGX 279,900 and TZs 179,900 in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania respectively. The Nokia Asha 501 is available in a choice of striking colours. Its seamless design comes in just two parts: a durable, removable “shell” and the scratch-resistant, tempered glass display. The compact, easy-to-use Nokia Asha 501 weighs only 98 grams, for the ultimate in portability.

Commenting on the partnership, Andre Beyers, Chief Marketing Officer from Airtel Africa said, “By providing free access to Facebook on the new Nokia Asha 501, we are combining a beautifully designed smartphone, new UI with a simple swipe action and the value add for access to the most popular social network. This highlights Airtel and Nokia’s commitment to deliver great mobile products and services to our valued consumers.”

Internet access continues to grow in East Africa, driven primarily by high mobile phone usage and stiff competition among the service providers. The growth in mobile data consumption can largely be attributed to the popularity of social media. This craze, particularly amongst the youth market, is encouraging companies to enter strategic partnerships to offer attractive packages and incentives to consumers as they strive to stay ahead of the game.

According to the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), there are over 9.49 million Internet subscribers in Kenya alone.  Mobile access continues to dominate, representing 99 percent of the total subscriptions.

In the first quarter of this year, the estimated number of Internet users rose by 11.6 percent to reach 16.2million, from 14.5million users in the previous quarter. This increase is attributed to the growing demand for Internet and data services, including the use of social media, especially amongst the youth. Competitive tariffs by the mobile operators are also contributing to the growth.

Based on these market dynamics, the two companies are banking on the combination of colourful, affordable and fun smartphones with free access to Facebook to appeal to the vibrant youth market. These consumers are already active on social media, especially Facebook, which continues to be the most popular social media channel in Kenya. It’s estimated that Facebook in Kenya has over 2.2million users, while Twitter has only around 500,000 users.

Digital migration commences in Kampala Uganda

Uganda has began its migration to digital broadcasting, after the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) officially received the signal distribution equipment, marking the commencement of simultaneous broadcasting of the digital and analogue signals in the country’s capital.

Commenting on the migration process, Engineer Godfrey Mutabazi, the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), told East African Business Week that the migration process will come to a completion by end of 2014, implying that Ugandans have at least a year to purchase Set Top Boxes.

The Uganda Digital Migration Policy states that UBC is responsible in the supply of subsidized Set Top Boxes to the citizens, in a bid to make the gadgets more affordable to the people. Despite the policy in place, Pay TV operators Zuku, Multichoice and StartTimes still remain the main distributors of the decoders as UBC is yet to implement the guidelines.

Pay TV operators will however be required to carry free to air channels, with Eng Mutabazi saying, “The free to air channels must be carried on their platforms even if one’s subscription to the Pay TV has expired.”

This requirement to allow access to free-to-air channels uninterrupted has been a bone of contention in the neighboring Kenya, where the same Pay TV operators have been at loggerheads with the Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK). The operators have always argued that allowing the channels to air even after expiry of subscription period will kill their business.

Borrowing from the experiences and the challenges faced by communication regulators in Kenya and Tanzania, UCC should brace itself for more challenges in its bid to beat International Telecommunication Union’s migration deadline of 2015.

SMS in Africa far From Being Dead

0

sms-text-messaging

Analyst from Squire Technologies have noticed an increase in SMS usage especially in African countries in the last 12 months, giving great opportunity for businesses and enterprises to take advantage of.

This growth was especially seen in Squire Technologies’ SS7 to VoIP Media Gateway, that gives companies and organizations a way to use text messaging through the VoIP system.

“We’ve reported before that countries such as Ghana have experienced deregulation of the telecoms market, which has presented opportunities for telecom operators,” Squire Technologies’ regional Sales Manager for Africa, Zacc Couldrick, noted.

“SMS also enables mobile banking and the dissemination of news and marketing information to large audiences, which would otherwise have been impossible. These factors combined show that Africa has a great opportunity for growth and we have seen proof of this over the past few years,” he added.

Telecom companies in Africa though have seen the danger of free apps such as WhatsApp that could lead to the death of traditional SMS.

Knife Capital Introduces Grindstone Programme To Sharpen Company Skills

0

knife

Knife Capital’s manager has launched a new programme which is planned to help CEO’s of high-growth entrepreneurial businesses, take their companies to the next level.

It has introduced the Knife Capital’s nine-month accelerator programme, Grindstone which aims to guide business owners and managers through an thorough review of their strategies and provide them with the necessary support to scale their businesses and attract growth investment.

Grindstone is labeled as part-business accelerator, part-advisor, and part-investor and is believed to be the first programme of its kind in South Africa.

Created to draw the CEO’s attention to business areas outside of their central area of proficiency, the programme will also focus on strengthening the management skills as well as support structures of CEOs who have exciting products and viable businesses that can scale.

“Often, the reason that businesses do not grow and excel is not because they’re bad at what they do. Usually they are very good in their core business but neglect areas outside their comfort zone such as human resources management, finances, compliance or sales and marketing, which can inhibit growth and, in some cases, cause a company to fail,” explains Andrea Böhmert, director of Knife Capital and the person in charge of Grindstone.

Grindstone will help managers identify the strengths and weaknesses of their businesses and show them how to implement their growth strategy.

A recent study conducted by Stanford University,US found that an increasing number of top CEOs are seeking outside mentorship and coaching to deal with the fact that “it’s lonely at the top”.

“We see the same situation here,” says Böhmert. “But we believe leaders of smaller companies with potential to grow also feel isolated and deserve external help as well as an appropriate peer network. Grindstone fills that gap.”

To be considered for Grindstone, applicants need to apply before 23 August 2013. A preliminary 50 companies will be acknowledged, and 10 will be nominated for the nine-month Grindstone acceleration programme.

The on international Women’s Day set to be on 9th August 2013, the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust will introduce its Rape Information Portal on Mxit.

It will form part of Mxit’s “MySafety” app, which currently has 164 475 subscribers.

Lack of information and poor understanding of how the criminal justice system works prevents rape survivors from accessing justice, says a research report from Rape Crisis in 2011.

This portal will immensely improve the accessibility of information about rape to women, particularly in poorer and rural communities.

The app which they called RapeCrisis is currently available in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa, filters 30 years of experience working with rape survivors into a simple yet comprehensive information package. Users can access the app by typing mxitapp.com/rapecrisis into a phone’s browser.

RapeCrisis will endow women with the evidence they need to sail across the journey towards justice and recovery. This multifaceted process has many steps including disclosure, reporting to police, a forensic examination and medical treatment, police investigation, court proceedings and counseling.

“Our mission is to act as a bridge between the rape survivor and the criminal justice system. Rape Crisis is committed to offering survivors information that is clear, accurate and accessible. The value of the Mxit mobile social network is that it is an inexpensive, easily accessible tool with enormous reach as it can work on nearly any phone. Women in poor and rural communities might not otherwise have had access to this vital information,” said Kathleen Dey, Rape Crisis Director.

Andrew Rudge, head of Mxit Reach, had this to say: “The MySafety app was created earlier this year in response to the Anene Booysen tragedy. Including the information from Rape Crisis increases the value of this app immeasurably as a tool to inform and empower our users.”

LG Gives USD 1.3 Million In Support Of Underprivileged Schools In Nairobi

LG electronics has today handed over, Makina Self Help Primary, the last project of its three-year partnership with the World Food Program (WFP) Kenya that saw LG contribute about USD 1.3 million to provide meals and construction of schools facilities in Nairobi slums.

LG and WFP Kenya entered into a partnership in 2009 to provide school meals and infrastructure to “LG hope Schools” in the slums of Nairobi. The three faced programme saw LG provide school meals and construct school facilities to increase enrollment, hence pupil performance and promote good nutrition and health.

“The ultimate goal of the LG-WFP partnership was to contribute to sustainable development through the transformation of run-down and under-resourced schools into LGE Hope Schools, which would become community centres that promote opportunities and brighter futures for poor, disadvantaged children,” said Joseph Kim, Managing Director of LG East and Central Africa.

The partnership started with LG providing USD 403,920 to offer meals to 24,715 children in 15 schools in the slums of Nairobi. This donation was received at a time Kenyans were facing high food and fuel prices experienced across the world.

“Schools meals effectively keep children in school and help them learn, especially those who are sadly not getting enough to eat at home. WFP is therefore grateful for the support from LG which helped us provide school meals to children in slums,” said Paul Turnbull, WFT acting County Director.

This collaboration is aimed at alleviating short-term hunger and improve educational performance through providing of school meals by establishing good basic infrastructure for schools in order to ensure schools are able to provide proper hygiene, food storage, supply of water and low cost-cooking.

Makina Self Help Primary is located in the heart of Kibera slum, Nairobi. The school has 480 pupils from kindergarten to grade 8 of which many are orphans or from a single parent home. The school was chosen as a beneficiary because it is located in the poorest catchment area, had the worst infrastructure in terms of education facilities, and inadequate number of classrooms compared to the number of school children enrolled.

Africalegislation.com Goes Live To Help Payroll Authors In South Africa

0

Africa graphic dark smallSouth African Human Resource and payroll administration experts have today launched an information portal dedicated to help businesses across the continent with payroll and tax management.

Dubbed the Africa Employment Legislation Library, the portal is an international initiative that is focused on information share that will help users with challenges pertaining to the legal, practical and other considerations that form part of the payroll discipline.

It is hoped that the initiative will attract and secure the participation of recognised industry bodies like the Payroll Authors Group of South Africa (PAG).

Negotiations are underway with PAG to possibly offer the service to payroll vendors, which, as organisers of the portal explain, will help to ensure that everyone receives the same information and interpretation for development.

Initial funding for the development of the initiative was provided by Centric Holdings.

The key factor behind the establishment of the portal is to have in place a centralised location that will serve to facilitate information gathered from across the continent pertaining to payroll.

Legal specialists involved in setting up the Library acknowledge that this information is not always readily available and without an effective, reliable online channel, is often difficult to source.

“Our intention is to provide the user with relevant and up-to-date information. We source this data from different areas and the results of a thorough evaluation process. Documents are scrutinised, analysed and interpreted before it is incorporated into the offering. Revenue authorities and government portals are tracked for new publications and legislative updates,” explains Nicolette Nicholson, Head of Legislation.

In addition to the benefit of a single, reputable source of valuable information, the user also has peace of mind in knowing that what they are assimilating and applying has been ratified by seasoned legal professionals.

“This removes the burden of the user having to make sense of the maze of inaccurate or outdated interpretations within the employment market,” adds Nicholson.

The initiative is supported by the efforts of a dedicated team of researchers and staff who collectively ensure that the site is regularly updated.

Africa Employment Legislation Library is a membership-based initiative and offers all stakeholders in payroll the opportunity to join through either its Basic or Premium membership packages.

There are a host of services attached to each offer and payroll vendors can obtain additional membership to development requirement specifications, at an additional cost.

To date, the short-term objective of those behind the portal is to have 24 African countries fully documented by the end of 2013, with the longer-term aim of adding all 54 countries by 2016.

The project, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims at mapping out water sources and record test results using mobile technology, even as the Mwanza City Council tries to find ways to provide clean drinking water to its over half a million residents.

“In 2012, mWater and UN HABITAT collaborated with MWAUWASA and Mwanza City Council to conduct a study to demonstrate the scientific validity of low cost tests of the mWater applications for mobile smartphones, which maps out water sources and records their water test results,” said mWater in a statement.

The organizations will collaborate with the local authorities in the project in establishing demand for water quality information and also come up with ways of constant monitoring of water sources in the region.

mWater said that it will provide free smartphones, airtime and initial supply of test kits to spur participation by the locals.

mWater created an Android app that makes it easy for locals to  enter data from supported water tests which in turn provides a summary of previous test results for a particular water source. With the application, the user receives instant feedback regarding their own water sample while the data is uploaded to the cloud for mapping and sharing with others.

The mapping project was launched after it was discovered that there was need to come up with innovative approach to water development and supply in Mwanza area, currently facing a rapid urban population growth.

“The knowledge and lessons generated by this project will be used to expand the availability of low-cost tools for water quality monitoring and mapping in other regions and countries,” mWater added.

Uber Goes Live In Africa | Launches Secret Testing Phase In Johannesburg

0

800px-Johannesburg_Sunrise,_City_of_GoldTaxi hire mobile app Uber has today launched in Johannesburg and is doing a “secret testing phase.”

South African football legend and African Cup of Nations winner Mark Fish and his chauffeur Paul, were the fisrt in Africa to test Uber, an app that is set for a kill in Africa and probably be a pain to Cape Town-based Zapacab, which also has plans to expand across Africa.

Several reason can explain why Uber choose Johannesburg as their first city in Africa than Rocket Internet’s preference of Lagos Nigeria.

Firstly, Johannesburg is the economic powerhouse of South Africa,  is home to JSE Limited, the largest stock exchange on the continent and the 16th biggest in the world and over 70 percent of South African companies have their headquarters here.
With over 3,2 million inhabitants in the city with 42 percent of the population under the age of 24 and 49 percent under the age of 34.

Secondly, the M1 highway is not an easy ride for drivers and can an be crushing especially with the notoriously high speed limits.

Uber therefore wants to be part of the solution.

Mark-Fish-1024x739“That’s part of the reason we can’t be more thrilled to be here; so that Jo’burg residents and visitors have a safe, reliable transportation option where they can travel in comfort and style. No more waiting after a night out for a safe ride home, and no more trusting your car’s security with parking attendants on side streets,” Uber said on its blog.

Uber’s “secret testing phase”, is not for everyone but the firm said its working hard to make additional Ubers available every day.

The reported intention of the company is to use this presence to offer fixed and mobile services throughout the continent.

Ross Thomasson, Regional Director Africa for Vodafone Global Enterprise, is quoted as saying that most businesses want a single contract across multiple countries and that “companies are looking for ability and control.”
