America firm Kuramo Cap to buy 12% of micro-lendor Pezesha

0

Kuramo Capital is expressing interest in purchasing 12% of Kenyan-based digital micro-lender, Pezesha African LTD. The firm had earlier this year (August) participated in a Pezesha seed-round through its Consonance Kuramo Special Opportunities Fund I.

Pezesha, founded in 2016, has since carved a niche for itself as a value-chain financial marketplace, designed to provide financial education to borrowers, as well as walk them through a seamless credit-scoring process, that ultimately qualifies them for loans.

A guide on cable management

0

If your home or office is plagued by cables, you’re going to want to consider undertaking cable management. It takes minimal effort, but the benefits it can deliver are huge. Here, you’ll discover why cable management is important and how to incorporate it into your space.

What is cable management?
Cable management is the process of correctly storing and managing cables in order to improve safety and make it easier to maintain them as and when it’s needed. There are several ways to manage the cables in your home or office and there are also a number of reasons why it’s important. It takes much less effort than you might think too, so what benefits could it provide?

What are the benefits?
The two main benefits of cable management include:

No risk of switching anything off.
It removes a potential tripping hazard.

At some point, you’re going to need to access the cables, whether it’s to upgrade your existing connections or to repair faulty cables. If they aren’t managed correctly, there is a good chance you could end up pulling the incorrect cable out, accidentally disconnecting some of your devices. This can prove disastrous if it’s a cable to your computer system! Cable management can help you to prevent this from ever becoming a problem.
The fact it removes a tripping hazard is also a great benefit too. A trip or fall over a cable could prove particularly nasty. So, it’s worth investing in good cable management for these two benefits alone.

How to manage your cables
Managing your cables is a lot easier than you might think. You can pick up everything you need from a company such as RS Components. Then, once you have the correct tools, you can focus on getting the cables off the floor and under the table.
There are lots of ways to do this including running them under the floor, ensuring the cables are separated with cable ties and labelling them so you know which cables go where. It’s also recommended that you manage the cables within the actual computer system, as well as outside of it.
Not only does cable management enhance safety and reliability, but it also looks better too. So, if you’re looking to create a safe, clean working environment, cable management is crucial. It costs little to set up and could save you a lot of time, money and stress in the long-term.

Careers you can pursue in the e-sports industry

The world of work is changing. We all know this. To a certain extent the world in which people entered into a trade at 16 and stayed in this job for the rest of their life are gone, for better or worse. However, due to the rise in technology and the changing world we now have huge opportunities in emerging fields to look forward to in our work life, as well as the chance to constantly update our skill set. One of these new fields is Esports. You may be wondering what kind of careers are available in this relatively young industry.

First of all, you could work on the games themselves. This section of the industry includes but is not limited to gamer, those who play the games (yes it’s the stuff of dreams to be a professional gamer), and it also involves developing the games. For example, you may compose the music for the games, or develop and create the games, or even create the artwork. These jobs can be quite lucrative, and obviously require you to be creative and to have technical knowledge of games or some other form of specialist knowledge. Another dream job within the industry is to be a games tester. Just think, you could earn around £60,000 for playing games!

Aside from actually working on the games themselves, the other main sector of the industry involves organising and hosting the events in which people play the games. For example, you could organise the gaming events, including hiring the venues and marketing them. For this, you would need events and marketing experience. Likewise, you could be in charge of developing the merchandise for such events, for which you would need a similar set of skills.

As we said, the world of work is changing. To say you worked in the Esports industry only a few years ago would be akin to saying you had just arrived from Mars! However, now there are real opportunities in this industry if you have the right skills and qualification.

To find out more about these exciting careers, see this infographic.

6 tips on selecting the right ERP for your business

0

ERP is the abbreviation for Enterprise Resource Planning. Even with this definition, it is still not clear what ERP is, and what the applications for it are. If the information about it on the internet seems overwhelming, fret not, we will explain it to you in the simplest language possible.
The central processes required to run a business effectively are human resource, finance, sales, marketing, customer service, inventory management among others. An ERP system integrates and, streamlines all these core functions of a business into a single system. The automation and computerization of these processes help to increase efficiency. Improved efficiency in a company almost always results in profits.

Integration is only the primary level. Most ERP systems can provide intelligence and analytics that informs the various decisions the business undertakes. An ERP system is also capable of facilitating the flow of information across departments in real time.

Here are 6 tips on selecting the right ERP for your business:
1. Business needs

Every business has its own specific requirements that must be met for the business to continue growing. While it is true that ERPs generally integrate all the company’s core processes, they are highly customizable and can be easily adjusted to suit the business needs.
Always inquire if the ERP you are looking to purchase can meet the specific needs of your business. It would be best if you never altered your business needs, and goals, because a new system has been introduced.

2. Budget
Every investment should be carefully thought out. Crunching the numbers to determine the return on investment (ROI) is something all business people do. For ERP software, you need to factor in implementation, installation, and maintenance costs.
Choosing cheaper software may not always be the best idea. For example, you may find that cheaper ERP software requires intensive training that may be costly to obtain.

3. Customization
As earlier stated, ERP for manufacturing systems are highly customizable; different industries have unique requirements. Those in retail will require a different ERP to those in education.
Therefore, if you have highly complex processes, you will need an ERP that can be customized to support all those processes.

4. Easy to update
Let’s face it. The technology world is constantly changing, and so do their products. In fact, these companies have departments dedicated to this very task. Thus, an update to a system is almost inevitable.
You will never be able to get the maximum potential out of an outdated system. Also, you may experience errors trying to complete common actions. It is, therefore, critical to know the procedure of updating an ERP system whenever an update is released. Ensure that you also find out if there is a cost involved.

5. Accessibility on portable devices
ERP software that can only be used on a desktop is very restrictive. Many companies have embraced mobile devices that can be used by employees on the go. This accessibility on different devices makes the use of new systems seem less daunting as it is generally a pleasant experience using tablets and Smartphones.
It is imperative that you find ERP software that can be used on multiple devices. The system should be device friendly.

6. Company size
Some ERP systems are better suited for larger organizations, while others are better suited to smaller organizations. Most solution providers often have a list of companies currently using their services.
You can explore this in detail to determine the sizes of the company, and then make the decision based on that information.
Use these six tips on selecting the right ERP for your business to make an informed decision!

Is technology leading us towards De-urbanization?

0

What is Urbanization?
Urbanization is a process where the population from a rural area moves to the urban area which causes the city to grow. People move due to the notion that they will get better job opportunities and have better living standards in the city compared to the rural area.

Urbanization is due to the occurrence of the industrial revolution. Due to the outbreak of plenty of jobs in the city, people decided to relocate. However, due to too much of urbanization, the living standards in the city are deteriorating. Many cities are overcrowded, there is no clean air due to thousands of vehicles and many industries and a shortage of water due to too many people. Space constraint is also a big issue in the city as spacious houses are too expensive. With so many issues of living in the city, people are dreaming of escaping to the rural area again and the latest technologies have made it possible for them to start a new, peaceful and healthy life outside the city.

Work from Home:
Urbanization mainly has occurred due to the concentration of jobs in the city. But with the advancement of technology, you do not need to go to the office to do your job. You can work from the comfort of your home itself. Cloud platform lets you store your documents online for sharing with colleagues. Online video conference and meetings can be held. This way the entire globe can become your office and you can connect and work with anyone across the world. This makes physical location not significant at all hence people do not have to move to cities to work in good companies and people who are already living in the cities get a chance to move to the comfort of rural spacious homes.

Companies Outsourcing the Work to Rural Areas:
Companies have started to take advantage of outsourcing their work to rural areas where the cost of living is less hence the companies need to pay less. The ‘work-from-home’ facility is being used to finish off the job. Local offices are also being set up which are cheaper than renting an office in the city. This way people don’t have to relocate, and the company has financial advantages too, it is a win-win for all.

Online Shopping:
One of the bonuses of living in the city used to be visiting shopping complexes. However, nowadays consumers can buy anything online and get it delivered to the doorstep. These services are expanding to rural areas too. Hence rural living is preferred by many people as it provides them with fresh air, clean water, wide space, and a calm surrounding.

Online Education:
In earlier days, we have heard many people dislocating from rural areas to the city for better education of their children and the city side had the best schools. Technology has led us to the path of online learning which can be done from any place of the earth, you just need an internet connection and a laptop.

There are still certain limitations of living in a rural area, but technology is rapidly advancing and very soon there could be major breakthroughs which will lead to mass migration of people from the city to rural areas causing De-urbanization.

Meet The Nigerian Woman Who Is A Market Leader In Smart Card Technology

0

Meet the Nigerian woman who is a market leader in smart card technology.

It is usually unheard of when a woman takes interest in technology. Most women have been brought up believing that tech and Science are for men. However, we are lucky enough to have women like Kofo Akinkugbe. She is globally recognised for her entrepreneurial success story and strong business track record. She is founder & CEO of SecureID Nigeria Ltd a market leader in smart card technology and digital security. SecureID is a world-class manufacturing facility with the only smart card production plant in West Africa and one of only six on the continent. This company serves 16 countries across Africa and is fully certified by VISA, Verve and MasterCard.

secureid

Kofo started her career in a bank then left to start her business 12 years later.

She left to start Interface Technologies, a security management and biometrics technologies company.  With a mathematics major and an MBA from the University of Strathclyde, she successfully ran Interface Technologies Ltd. (ITL) for nine years, before establishing SecureID Nigeria Ltd., an offshoot from a small department in Interface Technologies and the first VISA certified plant in sub-Saharan Africa.

kofo

As chief executive of Secure ID, which is still a relatively young firm creating MasterCard and Visa and operating in 16 African countries was obviously challenging.

Kofo is an excellent example of a chief executive that is building a successful company based on innovation. From her company, she has shared her journey with the public and gave a few tips from her own experience. For starters she cautioned against engaging only family members, urging the need to employ people with untapped talents.  She urged people to test and try new things and see what would work.

She managed to be creative even if at the time when she started her company her business venture was new but her determination paid off.

But recently, girls have also been challenged to try something new and they are astounding.

Meet The South African Techpreneur Who Is Providing Professional Health Care Online

0

A country with no health care system is basically a lost one.

This is why when we get people who create an easier way to access a healthcare system we tend to be impressed. The chances are that in our increasingly busy lives, we will need to get health advice and information at short notice and potentially outside of usual medical practitioner hours or without having to wait for clinic appointments, meaning that an alternative is required. South African techpreneur, Gaby Lobban, founder of Zumbudda, knows this scenario only too well as a busy working mother of three children. Her website offers real-time e-chats with expert healthcare professionals is providing a great and innovative solution.

Image result for Zumbudda

Her company is a unique one and a growing one in the market.

Zumbudda is a technology company which has launched a website offering REAL-Time eChats with healthcare professionals (Experts) to people looking for advice. More personal than a Google search and more specialised than a helpline. The technology used is proprietary software which allows the Expert to charge a set rate per minute and anyone can sign up to chat using credits purchased through an approved payment gateway like PayPal. Practitioners know their limits of care so they are very wary and conservative in their approach to eVisits but they often consult on the phone for minor problems so all this does is move the call to an online text chat which is billed per minute. This also ensures both parties have a record of their conversation which they can keep on file for future reference.

Image result for Zumbudda

Where does Zumbuda usually come in?

Many people are worried about receiving a diagnosis over the internet, but this is not the purpose of the website. Advice could include questions about a health issue or to get clarity on a medication or even confirm if you need to go seek a face-to-face consultation urgently. When your own practitioner is unavailable often there isn’t a relationship with another Expert so Zumbudda could be a plan B or a second opinion.  A lot of working mothers and single fathers would benefit from this website but it could be for anybody, young or old seeking healthcare advice.

Why is such a site an accomplishment?

The reality is, it’s better to have an expert to communicate with than even Googling symptoms online. This has obviously created jobs in the healthcare industry and it’s great because experts are selected through a quality assurance process and they also have to sign up and become members which ensures that they are registered with the relevant regulating body or council. Experts can work more flexible hours and manage their office hours more efficiently by being available online to their clients after hours or during non-peak periods.

Meet The Woman Who Is Connecting The Nigerian Elderly To Professional Caregivers Using Technology

0

In Africa getting adequate help for the elderly is quite a challenge.

Many people fear to leave their loved ones with caregivers because they are usually underqualified. Many families end up complaining that when they leave elderly people in homes they tend to be mistreated. However, Chika Madubuko is changing that with her company, Greymate care. Greymate care has an online platform that connects specialist carers to those in need of care, giving both patients and families the peace of mind they are looking for.

Screen Shot 2017-09-17 at 1.06.01 PM.jpg

While we may have figured out how to move around and get food delivered to our doorsteps, we haven’t really done enough to make technology useful.

Greymate Care is the uber for home care. It is the online platform that connects the elderly to a vetted and insured caregiver/doctor/nurse at the click of a button. They take the stress of care off busy professionals using technology. Greymate Care not only solves the problem of finding a companion right in the comfort of one’s home but they also have the potential of providing 10,000 jobs within Africa.

Screen Shot 2017-09-17 at 1.05.37 PM.jpg

So what inspired Chika to start this company?

Every startup has a story behind it and as for Chika her company was started as a result of a highly personal experience. They found it difficult to find someone to provide care during the last days of her diabetic grandmother. At a point, they took turns in the family to spend time with her and this made their school work and jobs suffer. Even when they opted for a paid caregiver, there was no regulated marketplace and they were worried about the quality of the caregivers they found as none of them was background checked or trained. She eventually lived the rest of her life with less care and attention than she truly deserved. She decided to solve this problem for other families by getting some training in the UK and started Greymate Care in Nigeria.

Obviously, the reason why anyone would use this platform is rather obvious.

For starters, who wouldn’t want their loved ones with caregivers that are actually qualified? Greymate Care differentiates itself from other home care services due to their highly mechanised processes and equipment as opposed to the regular manual handling methods that are currently available. They thoroughly check their caregiver’s backgrounds and make sure that they are well suited for the job.

I think this is a phenomenal woman and this is a very useful and selfless way of using technology.

Free Wifi Service Launched in Surulere, Lagos by Governorship Elections candidate, BabaJide Sanwo-Olu

The people of Surulere, a community in Surulere, Lagos got a big surprise on Sunday night with the launch of a free wifi service by BabaJide Sanwo-Olu, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State. The initiative was launched two days after he spoke about how “technology is changing the way people live, work and socialize” at a technology event at the Vibranium valley in Lagos.

According to tweets from his campaign organisation, the free wifi provided at Leisure mall in Surulere is the first of other locations they will be activating in the coming weeks.

Lagos which boasts of a vibrant technology ecosystem requires quality internet service to truly tap into the abundant human resource available. Internet access is a big world leveler and any government that is serious enough about changing the socio-economic status of its citizens  will need to borrow from the BabaJide Sanwo-Olu playback and look to provide this sort of service.

Early indications show that understanding technology will play an important role in the coming elections in Lagos, and we will be following how candidates respond to questions around technology and access.

Lagos Governorship Elections Candidate, BabaJide Sanwo-Olu Speaks on Technology at Vibranium Valley

Technology growth in Lagos, Africa’s seventh largest economy is about to get a boost according to Mr BabaJide Sanwo-Olu, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu made the pledge on Friday during a Digital Lagos event hosted by Vibranium Valley, a digital technology hub for innovation and collaboration owned by the Venture Garden group, where he addressed the tech community of start-ups, developers and tech innovators.

He promised to provide institutional and infrastructural support for the growth and development of the technology sector in the State if elected as Governor in 2019.

The candidate who early indications favour his win said technology is changing the way people live, work and socialize adding that social and governance problems are also solved with technological innovations especially in a city-state such as Lagos with a Gross Domestic Product of more than $136b dollars.

He promised that when elected, his government will work in partnership with the technology sector to solve social issues such as creation of employment opportunity, mentoring, entrepreneurship, education, health, transportation and to also improve the revenue profile of the government.

In his welcome address, the Co-founder/Chief Executive of Officer of Venture Garden Group, Bunmi Akinyemiju identified how technology and innovation are critical to create economic opportunities and social inclusion in Lagos adding that the facility currently employs over 1,500 Nigerians and the 5 years plan is to generate 45,000 employments.

Akinyemiju highlighted the challenges tech start-ups face in Lagos in areas of power, funding and tax which government must address adding that with right partnership with government in Lagos and Nigeria will have exponential effect the economy.

“Digital Lagos is about digital economy that will create innovators solving problems and improving the way we live and work. With what we have here and at Yaba innovation hub we are empowering the next generation of wealth creators in Nigeria. We are driving investment. You need to imagine the amount of foreign interest we get here from around the world. We need more campuses like this across Lagos.”

It’s an informal name from the United States, for the fourth Thursday of November, which has been regarded as the beginning of the country’s Christmas shopping season since 1952, although the term “Black Friday” did not become widely recognised or used until the early 2000s. What happens on this day is that most major retailers open very early, as early as overnight hours, and offer promotional sales. But Black Friday is not an official holiday.

In 2018, Black Friday will be on Friday 23th November, 2018. However, here in Kenya Every Friday is Black Friday with Jumia in November.

Just in case you didn’t know, Jumia is currently the top downloaded App on Playstore Kenya, thanks to Black Friday. This happened when Jumia announced two weeks ago that it would be driving app only deals to its customers and so this pushed people to download the app instead of visiting the website directly.

So do not wait for November 23th to start your shopping because you’re assuming that many sales will start on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday.

Jumia Black Friday is different from all the others marked by other retailers because it runs for one month, 2nd – 30th November, with up to 70% discount on 3.5M products.

Something unique about Jumia’s Black Friday is that there are:-

  • 10 Mega Flash Sales every two hours with limited stock on all Fridays,
  • 5 Treasure Hunts every day,
  • 7 flash sales daily and
  • free vouchers to top up shopping

Jumia expects 12M visits to the site because shoppers are guaranteed on the best prices for items they look to buy since there are over 3.5M products to choose from. Mind you, from their 10,000 vendors online, the products are of the highest choice online and offline.

Jumia Black Friday went Live on Thursday night at 12AM with a great improvement on traffic to the site compared to last year. They had 6 times more traffic as compared to last year’s Black Friday.

Their day 1 sales were 2X bigger than last year’s launch day – with strong performances in Appliances, TVs, Phones and Groceries. Plus there was a huge surge on the Jumia App for App only deals where by it’s cheaper to shop with your phone. This is because you use less data as compared to using laptops.

But I’m sure we are all wondering how Jumia comes up with the big discounts?! Well, their vendors absorb price reduction because of expected volumes.

Both the Vendors and the Jumia Logistics teams are better prepared for the massive orders that will be made during this period thanks to their training department. Plus there is a shorter return and refund process, thus lesser complaints come up as vendors have upped their game.

Sales from Black Friday can contribute to the betterment of e-commerce in Kenya because the Increase penetration on awareness causes more visits and sales, more confidence in online transactions, talkability, and growth of products thus giving people a wider choice online.

Offline retailers are Jumia’s main competition because Kenyans still embrace brick and mortar – touch and feel, while Jumia offers convenience, quality and choice to drive offline traffic to online and match the same offline experience.

Cash on delivery has been a big factor in beating offline retailers for Jumia because of trust issues. (I’ve been there, you really want to buy a pair of shoes, but you aren’t sure of the material, make and feel, so you’d rather not pay before seeing them and  better yet trying them on). Meaning, the ecommerce pie is still small and Jumia’s need is to grow the pie first.

As a Jumia Customer some of the surprises to expect this Black Friday period are:

  • Jumia could sell more Mbuzi for 1000 bob you never know!
  • Unga for 20 bob! (Remember, Millers are set to increase prices soon)
  • Free orders on coke; to try Jumia for Free (new customers can order coke for one bob, with free delivery to help them gain online trust, cool huh!)

And you have no need worry about online security in terms of payments, Jumia knows that Kenyans prefer cash on payment + Mpesa of course which is the highest used mode of payment. Jumia delivers, you pay. In addition to that, Jumia have partnered with Visa for free delivery and up to Kes.250.00 off on visa payments.

To avoid disappointment this Black Friday, customers are advised to:

  • Download the Jumia App to access app-only deals and vouchers
  • Visit Jumia site daily at 9AM check out the deals of the day. Especially during the biggest days – each Friday of November!
  • Pay Jumia a visit Jumia’s offline stores in Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nakuru & Kisumu for any enquiries and get a free voucher
  • Or place your orders over the phone by calling 0711011011

Meet Stephanie Cowper A Techpreneur Who Is Helping The Visually Impaired In South Africa With A Mobile App

0

Meet Stephanie Cowper, the woman who is helping the blind with  the power of mobile technology.

Her main goal is to obviously make a difference in the world. This South African entrepreneur and the startup team of BeSpecular Ltd. have created an app to help visually impaired people identify objects and situations and lead more independent lives. With many impaired people in South Africa it has become a challenge for some of these people to lead a normal life.  They developed a mobile application that enables visually impaired people to lead more independent lives.

How does it do so?

Visually impaired people often have to rely on those around them to help them identifying everyday objects and situations. There is not always someone around to help and it means they are always dependent on having someone around them. The Specular app is an innovative, simple and quick way for a visually impaired person to ask their question and have it answered by someone sighted anywhere in the world.

The Specular app enables sighted people to get to know their greater community and put their knowledge and skills to different use. On a monthly basis, sighted people will be rewarded for the number of questions they answered. Rewards will be tailored to the locations of the sighted people so that they might enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant as a token to say ‘Thank You’ for their assistance.

With subscriptions to the app, Specular, visually impaired people can take photos of the object/situation that they need to be identified and ask a sighted person to answer with a reply via a text or voice message. The Specular app will grow in the future to include machine vision functionality, as well as host events for both communities to get to know each other.

Such apps are obviously the key to solving many world apps.

We do use social media to connect people all over the world, so why not use apps to help the vulnerable? It clearly reduces many challenges that many people go through. All it takes are people who are willing to make apps that are actually helpful.

Meet Ugochi Ugbomegh The Nigerian Techpreneur Who Is Improving Nigeria’s Mobility Service

0

Ugochi Ugbomeh is not your ordinary woman.

She started a world-class transport company known as Tranzit in attempt to deal with the mobility sector in Nigeria. The problem and question was how would people move things and people effectively? One of Africa’s biggest problems is mobility, moving from point A to B is not as easy as it may seem. Women like Ugochi believe that powerful technology can be used to solve such issues in Africa.

So what is Tranzit about?

Tranzit was taken from the English word ” Transit” which basically means  “the conveyance of people and things from one place to another. Having this in mind, Tranzit is an IT based mobility service provider. Currently they offer two products:  TaxiPixi Africa www.taxipixi.com, which is a taxi e-hailing and booking service, that helps you book a taxi in 30 seconds. Secondly, TranzitIT, a technology based delivery service that serves both e-commerce and brick and mortar merchant owners, as well as regular consumers .

Tranzit claims to be different from other taxi services.

Ugochi says that one of the key strengths of their company is the fact that they are quite affordable in comparison to other taxi companies. They also offer quality and most of their customers are left happy. As any other growing company Ugochi’s vision for Tranzit is to make it grow and eventually expand to other countries even in other countries.

So what has she learned in her entrepreneurial journey?

Patience is key in every step you take when it comes to a business. Ugochi had to understand her market before venturing into this particular business. She became better at it the more she did her research. She also learned that there’s room for failure and it will come, when it actually does make sure you succeed anyways. Last but not least, always have a mentor that will guide you and will save you a lot of grief and time.

Kwese TV shuts down operations just 2 years after launch

0

Kwese TV is, or should I say was a subscription-based Zimbabwean satellite and broadcasting network owned by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, under Econet Media.

The service was officially shut down on the 1st of November, 2018, barely 2 years after its initial launch. Parent company, Econet Media, is shifting its focus to the latest digital and satellite broadcasting trends.

Kwese, which has been available in several African countries will now focus on three other brands; Kwese Free Sports, video-on-demand business Kwese Iflix and streaming service Kwese Play businesses.

Group President and Chief Executive of Econet Media, Joe Hundah, says the business’ is repositioning in response to market trends. “We believe these changes will safeguard the future success of our business as we continue to make an indelible impact on Africa’s media industry. The revised business strategy will also ensure that Kwesé TV continues to remain competitive within the industry,” said Mr Hundah.

In a statement, the firm said it will be reviewing its operational structures across all markets where Kwesé TV has a presence and the move may lead to changes on the firm’s various departments.

“Refocusing our business offering across markets, is a strategic move which aligns our business to Over The Top (OTT-streaming services) and video-on-demand trends which present significant growth opportunities for Kwesé. This renewed focus on digital services will see us provide new compelling offers for our customer’s enjoyment,” added Mr Hundah.

Subscribers of Kwese satellite TV will access free-to-air (FTA) stations only after the firm did away with third-party channels.

Cameroon based Zuoix enabling offline automobile tracking

0

For close to a year Cameroon has been in a tense state on the political front. The government has toggled the internet on and off in the country in order to keep misinformation and animosity in check. Despite the adverse situation, Cameroon-based Zuoix developed an innovative offline tracking mechanism for use by vehicle owners. The tracking system, Zoomed, has since won a prestigious award in the country for innovation and is currently in use by several individuals and companies. TechMoran spoke to Zuoix CEO Zuo Bruno about the company, its journey so far and plans for the future.

Tell us about yourselves; your team, your educational and professional backgrounds, and your journey with Zuoix so far
Firstly I want to thank you for inviting me into this forum. It is a great pleasure for me and the entire Zuoix team to be with you. Well, my name is Zuo Bruno, Founder and CEO of Zuoix which is an Offensive Information Security Company based in Limbe, Cameroon I am 34 years old today, happily married too. My team is made up of young and talented people, I work with Fergus Assam, Numfor Bridget, Tabot Ebai, Zuo Patience (My Wife), Dieter Trapp and Blaise Amadou amongst others, we work with a number of local electricians too.

How would you best describe Zuoix briefly, what does it do? Tell us about your product Zoomed?
ZUOIX is an Offensive Information Security company found in Limbe, Cameroon. The company quickly gained grounds in Silicon Mountain Ecosystem where it offered free Cyber Forensics Classes and other training mostly for free. Just like ZOOMED, we have other successful projects like RAfrica (listen to free radio stations across Africa via any smart device), GCE Helper (facilitates students writing the Cameroon Government Common Entrance Advanced and Ordinary Level pass with good grades), SOS (Smart Office Security ; a home/office building security system based on SMS) and ongoing projects like Crime Line and Motrix.
ZOOMED stands for ZUOIX Object Oriented Motor Electronic Device. It is a car security system that makes use of the SMS platform, GPS technology, Bluetooth and many modern technologies to secure cars. ZOOMED works solely by sending SMS commands from your existing mobile device such as your mobile phone (Any Type) Smart Watches, laptops, Fixed Phones or tablets, to your fleet of cars. ZOOMED makes use of specific SMS commands to carry our different functions on your fleet or car which include the following:

GPS Location
Geofencing
Voice Surveillance
Two-way Calling
Overspeeding Checks, alerts and analysis
Immobilisation
Ignition Alert
SOS Alarm with Artificial Intelligence
Accident Prediction and Prevention
Fuel Management / consumption Analysis
Location History
No Internet Required
Each car is secured with a password allowing only the car owner to carry out specific functions. Our team is constantly working on the clock to make ZOOMED a better service for use in Cameroon and across Africa.

What market gap did you spot that motivated you to start this company?
Honestly, I was motivated to create this application because of the disconnection of the internet from the English speaking regions of Cameroon, during this time a lot of people I knew lost their cars even though they had subscribed for Car security companies, some paying up to $500 just for installation fees and as high as $50 USD for monthly maintenance fees. However, when these cars were stolen, the owners could not recover them, the reason being that these systems relied entirely on internet connectivity, and once they were taken out of the country, the internet settings would change making it impossible for these cars to connect back to their owners. So, I immediately recognised that this was a problem and I wanted to solve it with technology. Another reason was the high cost of securing cars which excluded the average Cameroonian from enjoying the service, I thought that an SMS based system will be cheaper and also the internet services were difficult for some people to understand and use but SMS is easier and covers a wide area of the territory across the country and Africa at large.

Who is your target market?
Our target market is anybody who needs to secure any Automobile (Vehicles, Yacht, Ships, Motorbikes, just to name a few.). Anybody who wants a very good security system on their Automobiles. This includes but not limited to logistics companies, transport agencies and motor taxi operators even delivery companies and governments

How does your company make money?
Well, for now, we make money from selling our products to our loyal customers. We charge very low (since SMS is cheaper in Africa than the internet) we charge an installation fee from $100 USD and a monthly maintenance fee which can be paid daily of 17 US cents or monthly from $6

Who would you say is your major competition in this space at the moment?
We have a lot of competitors, all car tracking companies in Cameroon and Africa are our competitors. The difference though is that while all of our competitors secure cars using the internet (which is available to only 13% of the African population) we are making use of SMS which is available to more than 76% of the population and by extension we cover more territory just by using SMS.

What is your vision for the company in the next 5 years? What is your plan for expansion? Any new products coming soon?
Definitely, expand. Move to a much bigger office and employ a lot of people. We plan to make not only Africa but the world a better place. We want to have a major influence on the development of Africa as a whole and the world at large. Currently we have Four (04) projects we are currently working on and we hope that in a short while we will be able to put them in the market, The first is SMS Office Security (SOS) which will secure homes and offices using SMS, We are also working on a Fishing application which will allow local fishermen to locate fish in rivers, lakes and coastlines using SMS. We are also testing out Crime Prediction with SMS with an Application code-named CrimeLine and Lastly Motrix, a custom-made device for convoy security.

At the moment, how do you measure your own success? What are your metrics?
Well, we are doing quite well at the moment and if we are to scale we need to do even better. We currently have 105 paying client of which 90 are champions (Clients really dedicated to the product) we have a total of 612 individual installations and currently available in Cameroon, Ghana, Congo Brazzaville, Congo Kinshasha, Benin and hoping to scale even more to other markets, we have a 2% churn rate which is pretty good for a startup like us.

What advice would you give to upcoming entrepreneurs?
Failure is not a crime and it should not stop you, you have to be self-motivating, pushful and never give up. Like they always say; Good Things Takes Time, and I will tell them to always remember that they owe their innovation to Africa, it is their responsibility.

MPesa and Western Union partnering to make overseas cash transfers easier

0

In the wake of mobile money interoperability, MPesa has found more ways to expand its reach and tighgrab a larger share of the money transfer market. Safaricom has partnered with Western Union to make cash transfers overseas easier for MPesa users. This new deal was signed this Tuesday.

MPesa subscribers will be able to send and receive money from their mobile phones to individuals across the world, an expansion from the previously select 45 countries established in 2011. The firms had been working on the deal since July of 2017.

The partnership will see the more than 21 million of the globally-acclaimed mobile money service subscribers send a maximum of KES70,000 daily to family, friends and business partners abroad through the 500,000 plus Western Union’s agents in close to 200 countries.

Western Union’s regional vice president for Southern, East and Anglophone West Africa Richard Malcom said, “This is real a game-changer, a first one in the world for us,” Mr Malcom said. “Kenyans who have children studying abroad can now send them money directly from M-Pesa in case of an emergence such as medical.”

“M-Pesa is one of the greatest export. It has become part of our social fabric with 17 million customers now transacting on M-Pesa daily,” said Safaricom’s Chief Customer Officer Sylvia Mulinge said during the launch of the service in Nairobi.

Smartphone users on Android have to refresh their M-Pesa app to access the service under M-Pesa Global, while it may take up to four days from Tuesday for iPhone users to access it, Ms Mulinge said. Those with feature phones can access the service by dialling *840#.

The service will cost between a minimum of Sh100 for a transaction of up to Sh5,000 and Sh500 for remitting offshore more than Sh35,000, Safaricom said.

KRA to enhance tax administration using blockchain

0

In light of the Presidents recent crackdown on tax evaders, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced its search for areas where it can apply blockchain technology for tax administration with the help of the Blockchain and AI Taskforce.

The authority’s Commissioner for Strategy and Innovation, Mohammed Omar, said at the 2018 Tax Summit in Nairobi, that KRA is in talks with a various stakeholders including telcos, the National Transport and Safety Authority and Kenya Power to work out a strategy to create a data pool that will be used to nab tax evaders.

A recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) notes that while blockchain is not a solution to all the problems in the tax system, it could potentially be applied to reduce the administrative burden and collect tax at a lower cost, helping to narrow the tax gap.

Blockchain identity platforms have several uses, among them tax filing and regulatory enforcement. Corporates, government tax administrations, and tax advisory organisations could all be potential beneficiaries of this revolutionary technology.

BeBlocky simplifying programming and robotics for kids

0

BeBlocky is a gamified programming learning app for children between the ages of 6-13. It sets out to teach children the basics of programming and robotics in fun and interactive way. BeBlocky harnesses the power of Augmented Reality(AR) to project a programmable friendly robot, BlockyBot(left on the picture), into the real world. BeBlocky uses a drag-and-drop blocked based programming language which enables the children to creatively stack together programming components, such as actions, events and operations, and program BlockyBot. TechMoran spoke to BeBlocky to learn more about their business and their vision towards steering kids into technology in a fun-fueled way.

Tell us about yourselves; your team, your educational and professional backgrounds, and your journey with BeBlocky so far
My Name is Nathan Damtew. I was born and raised in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. I’m a 21year old recent graduate, class of 2018, from College of Natural Science, Addis Ababa University with bachelors in Computer Science . Ever since I was a kid, I love playing digital games, usually on my computer. But I never had the chance to learn programming until 11th grade in my high school, Saint Joseph.

Back when I first joined college in 2014, it has always bothered me why most of my classmates had trouble programming a simple “Hello Wold” app. Then later in 2017, 3 years into college, I’ve realized ,on a family holiday gathering, my cousins, who were only 10/11 by then playing Clash of Clan, a game that confuses me to this day on. So I thought if kids can understand game as complicated as Clash of Clans, they can also understand programming. That was my eureka moment. That’s when BeBlocky was born.

How would you best describe BeBlocky briefly, what does it do?
BeBlocky is a gamified programming learning app for children. It’s sets out to teach basics of programming in a fun and interactive way. It will enable kids to creatively stack together puzzle like graphical programming blocks to program BlockyBot, a friendly programmable robot. This way kids will grasp the basics of programming and also develop new ways of thinking and advance them in valuable skills.
My journey with BeBlocky . . .
It’s been almost over a year since I started working on BeBlocky. Ever since then I’ve been wearing different hats and played different roles. While BeBlocky was still at it’s early stage, I had some trouble finding the right partner. Later on I’ve decided to proceed solo hoping the right partner will come as time goes on. Now our team ranges from, 3D motion designer to programmer to business developer.
Within the past few months BeBlocky has been gaining a lot of attention. So far, BeBlocky has been nominated by World Summit Award as the best and innovative digital solution in Learning and Education from Ethiopia and recently BeBlocky made it among the finalists in AppAfrica Innovation Awards. I’ve have been accepted in Reach for Change incubator program and Tony Elumelu Foundation program.
BeBlocky has been demonstrated for over 2000 individuals on different occasions including in the Ethiopian National ICT expo 2018. It’s currently available on our website and soon to be launched on Google Play Store.

What market gap did you spot that motivated you to start this company?
There is a growing understanding that knowing how to program is essential, especially for younger generations. According to code.org, the number of jobs requiring basic programming skills within the next 5-10 years will reach 1.5 million. Yet coding is an invaluable skill that not enough people in the workforce master in Africa. Less than 1 percent of children in Africa currently leave school with basic coding skills. Ethiopia is among the least represented countries in this digital world. One of the main reasons for Ethiopian’s under-representation in the digital field is the absence of opportunities for its youth to learn and equip themselves with the skills to contribute to the digital development. Neither Ethiopia nor the rest of Africa is ready to this digital shift.
Kids now a days are growing up in a very different world than it was few years before, with cellphones, tablets, digital games embedded in their daily lives. We’re living in a digital world and it’s only going to grown in the future. So if math and science are taught to children to help them understand the world we’re living in, coding should be taught too. Although it is one thing for them to know how to use this technologies, it’s another, however to understand the logic behind them. These children must be able to not only passively consume these technologies but also become innovators and creators of it.

Who is your target market?
BeBlocky is essentially made for primary school children (aged between 6-13), but anyone who’d want to learn basics of programming can use it. It’s designed to look attractive and interactive for children and it’s not gender specific.

How does your company make money?
We believe learning programming shouldn’t be only for lucky few. Therefore, BeBlocky will be available for free for everyone. Since children don’t like to play with just only one toy, we’ll offer them different characters to switch too. The characters will be available on our in-app toy store with prices ranging form $1-$5. This would open an opportunity for 3D artists and motion designers to upload their characters into our toy store and get 60%-75% commission on every purchase.

Who would you say is your major competition in this space at the moment?
There are a couple for free web only platforms to introduce children to programming, but there are only few platforms mobile devices. Among the web platforms. Our biggest competitors are Scratch and code.Org. Both have a larger number of user basis, reaching over 40 Million worldwide. Other companies include Tynker and Pixels.

What is your vision for the company in the next 5 years? What is your plan for expansion? Any new products coming soon?
On our next update we’ll integrate Augmented Reality into BeBlocky. Kids love their smartphones and tablets, but still they enjoy playing with their toys. We believe adapting AR technology into our app gives them the best of both digital and physical world. This feature will make the the learning process more fun and more interactive. It will be available on our January update. Consider it as New Year gift.
We’re currently establishing a learning center here in Addis for primary school children. Learners will work on with a platform that’s intuitive and easy to use. It’s a child friendly environment in which children collaborate on given tasks and work on their own pace with the support and encouragement of an instructor. We’ll enroll our first batch on November 2018.
Within the next 3-5 years we expect to reach 7-9 Million children within Africa and the rest of the world as well. Our scaling strategy includes bringing more local characters in our app and translating BeBlocky into different languages.

At the moment, how do you measure your own success? What are your metrics?
I would consider my failures as my success. If I ever find a way to overcome my failure, which I usually do, it definetly means I’m Succeeding. It shows me am progressing. The more I keep failing, the more I learn, hetheore it wouod increase mu chance of succeeding. Of course I’ve set a road map where I would want myself and my company to be, but if it wasn’t for my failures I know I wouldn’t make it to any of my milestones. Whenever I fail, I belive it’s helping me get ready for a much bigger success. I don’t regret any of them. I just make sure I learn from them. So, everytime I fail it indicates me am on the right track and there is a success ahead, I just have to keep going.

What advice would you give to upcoming entrepreneurs
It’s never too early or too late to start, you just have to start. Once you decide, whatever idea you have on, being only passionate about it is not enough. A lot of things will change, people you hang out with, places you frequent, books you read, working hours, vacation days and the list goes on. You have to be willing to make this sacrifices. It’s basically a new lifestyle, entrepreneurship is a lifestyle. Things will get worse before they get any better. You just have to be patient and persistent all the time. Of course there will be a couple of times you’ll hit rock bottom but that doesn’t mean it’s over. You probably are exhausted. Take a break, go on a vacation, spent some time with your family and friends or if you are still a student as I was, am sure you are way behind on school work and you have a lot of caching up to do. Either ways, take your mind of it, take all the time you need and once you feel recharged or energized get back to work. Look for a good partner or co-founder. How do you know they are good ? Trust your gut! Surround your self with good support system. I have to say I owe everything to my parents and my family. Get your self a mentor, some who can guide you trough the journey. Build your self a team. A good team gets the job done quick. And make sure you are having fun through the journey. Last but certainly not least, be grateful for everything.

Design: What’s on the outside?

Straight out of the box, the Y9 2019 certainly doesn’t look and feel like a mid-range smartphone.

I don’t have a complaint about Y9’s design. It looks sleek and stylish with the huge 6.5-inch screen wrapped around it. The back panel on our model is Sapphire Blue with a shiny texture with a plastic metallic like build, and its design gives it a premium touch. The back houses 2 camera lenses, the flash, along with the fingerprint scanner and “Huawei” etched at the bottom. On the front, you’ll see 2 more cameras and the earpiece on the notch.

Everything looks good and in place and it’s so impressive that the Huawei guys were so generous to pack the phone with a free screen protector-already fit on the screen, you don’t have to worry about purchasing that.

I did use the plastic transparent cover provided in the box because the back panel is a grease and fingerprint magnet for those with sweaty palms, wasn’t so impressed by this. But, the phone is comfortable to hold, looks good on the hands and slips into pockets very well.

According to smartphone trends it seems like the “less bezels” trend seems to catching on with Huawei phones as well. This day’s most smartphones don’t come with hardware keys any longer, thereby making the screens bigger for media consumption, and it’s a good thing especially for those into phones for productivity and entertainment.

The phone is running Android 8.1 Oreo under Huawei’s own EMUI 8.2. – that’s the standard Huawei-made software made to make the entire Huawei family of phones unique in this ever-changing industry of Androids.
The dimensions of Huawei Y9 (2019) are 162.4 x 77.1 mm x 8 mm in size and it weighs just 173 grams.

The display

The Huawei Y9 2019 has a 6.5-inch Full View FHD+ 3D curved design display @ 1080 x 2340 pixels with a notch on top. This translates into 396 ppi density with an overall 82.8% screen to body ratio. The notch houses the two selfie cameras and other sensors and right on top of it is the earpiece.

You might think that the viewing experience is excellent. You’re not wrong. Although I’m not really one for playing games on the phone, the Y9 2019 will make me change my thoughts on that. However, I do spend my time reading a lot and the big screen and the Full HD+ resolution was quite the welcoming experience.

That’s not all though. The phone also boasts of being the first to be TÜV Rheinland Certified to ensure a gentle visual experience. With TÜV Rheinland, users can now stay up as long as they want because this mode will filter out harsh blue frequencies and reduce blue light damage, as well as give their eyes comfort in low light to provide extra comfort with Huawei Reading. Basically, this is when you can set the screen settings to avoid visual fatigue. If you do a lot of reading on your phone like me, I’m pretty sure you’ll find this feature helpful.

Other than that, the viewing angles, color accuracy and contrast of the display are good and it also provides ample brightness for you even under sunlight.

The camera

Let’s be frank with each other. What you all really want to know about is the camera, right?  I was quite curious about this as well.

There are a pair of dual cameras on the Huawei Y9 (2019) a 13MP + 2MP at the front and a 16MP + 2MP on the rear positioned vertically on the upper left corner. The 2 MP shooter is for background blur and Portrait Mode effects in both instances. In layman’s language, users are getting 4 cameras in total, 2 at the front and 2 at the back.
The Y9 2019 camera app itself is packed with a variety of features and modes. The camera app comes with different modes such as light painting, panorama, AR lens (Snapchat filters aren’t handy now), time-lapse, etc. If you’re picky about settings, the camera has a pro mode too.

What we know for a fact is that Huawei is taking their camera game pretty seriously, even with the budget/mid-range phones. The Y9 camera serves well for the average user. Plus, if you enjoy trying out different shots with various modes and features, you can certainly up your creativity game with the Huawei Y9 2019 Smartphone.

Taking pictures with a mobile phone is an essential part of our daily life. To get a perfect picture we need some skills as well as an excellent camera phone. Huawei Y9 2019 features both front dual camera and rear dual camera for hardware level Bokeh effect. Most of the phones with a single camera creates Bokeh effect only with software, while Huawei improves the technology with numerous research and accumulated knowledge.

The primary camera helps to focus while the secondary camera adjusts the distance to simulate DSLR performance, creating pictures with clearer layers and sharper edges. And with the help of AI optimization, you can take professional pictures easily, anytime anywhere in all conditions;

HDR mode:

Selfies:

AI mode:

The Huawei Y9 2019 integrates AI machine learning algorithm which improves with use and creates 22 different category labels including Portrait, Blue Sky, Snow, Ancient Building, Fireworks, Greenery, Cat, Dog, Text, Food, and Car. With intelligent image identification technology, AI photography helps to select the optimized background and adjusts all the parameters after analyzing the scene (up to 500+ scenarios), so your pictures always look the best.

The phone also features AI stabilization and Night Mode to create 6 seconds long exposure, to capture all the details and adjust the brightness in the low-light environment; Photography is also the art of light, and appropriate lighting can add aesthetic effects to the picture. Y9 2019 integrates AI 3D lighting to create different effects such as soft lighting, stage lighting, butterfly lighting and split lighting; and with the beautifying algorithm, you can produce studio-quality portraits in seconds.

Although, I noticed that the AI mode doesn’t enable the zoom feature when taking pictures.

Security

Getting on to the security aspect, the Huawei Y9 2019 ships with 2 extra security features apart from the normal security code. The fingerprint sensor and the Face ID. The fingerprint sensor is snappy on use but I have used it only a few times because I got used to using the facial unlock. Although, I was a bit skeptical about the Face ID.

Surprisingly, this feature performs pretty well and is fast. It took me less than three seconds to unlock my phone. Also I could choose which apps needed such kind of security, especially confidential photos or work documents and emails. When wearing my glasses or not my phone managed to recognize me easily; but when it’s dark, it may not recognize you sometimes, but other times, it’s swift.

Audio & Call Quality

Speakers are on the lower portion and are decently loud. But the fact that they get covered most of the times while playing games ruins the fun, I had to be careful to avoid covering them while using the phone when music is playing. Other than that, call quality and network coverage are good.

Battery and performance

I must say that I am satisfied with the massive 4000mAh battery, it makes the need for fast charging quite minimal. The big battery handles my daily usage quite well. I can comfortably get through a day’s work that includes mostly surfing or working on social media, listening to music, a bit of reading and gaming, and of course, capturing moments for the gram.

The Y9 2019 is equipped with the latest Kirin 710 octa-core CPU, which has tremendous improvement on gaming performance. Huawei’s unique GPU Turbo technology is also supported by Y9 2019. GPU Turbo re-architects how graphics are being processed at a system level. With hardware-software integrated solution, GPU performance is improved dramatically- enabling greater graphics fidelity and gaming performance while improving efficiency. By supporting GPU Turbo, Huawei Y9 2019’s GPU efficiency has doubled and its basic performance increased by 1.3x, providing consistent and reliable gaming experiences for endless fun.

The Uninterrupted Gaming Mode 2.0  on the phone helps to stop all the interruptions during the game time; it can filter unimportant notifications while incoming calls and text messages will only be shown as silent notifications so you can focus on your game. The phone also provides a Zero Interruptions Mode for serious gamers which temporarily turns off the voice call functions of both SIM cards, only keeping data connection available

I’d say almost every graphics intensive game performs without a glitch. Plus, I I’ve also multitasked on the phone quite often. So far, the Y9 2019’s Kirin 710 processor and 4GB RAM have worked smooth for me. But in the long run, this is also when the battery drains a little faster too.

At light usage, like for social media, clicking pictures and the like, users get a life of nearly two days on a single charge. I know the inclusion of fast charging support is necessary in this day and age, but I think the addition of a battery this large in capacity is a very balanced effort by Huawei.

As a high-quality entry-level phone, HUAWEI Y9 2019 is a must for all the gamers. The Kirin 710 chip works together with Huawei’s unique GPU Turbo technology, allowing smooth and high-quality gaming performance. The Game Suite can keep you focus on your games; and Karaoke mode, Party mode and Histen 5.0 bring users more wonderful entertainment.

The One-click Transfer is something else I liked on the phone. Huawei Phone Clone is an app that allows users to copy and transfer information from one device to another conveniently. The application is compatible with almost all Android devices including copying and transferring contact list, data, videos, audios, pictures, SMS, documents and third-party applications as well as messages contained in WeChat and SMS. For iPhones, the app can copy and transfer pictures, videos, contact list and event schedules (text messages and third-party apps are currently not supported)

Music

The Huawei Y9 2019 features Party Mode for playing the same track synchronously on a number of interconnected phones under the same WLAN, to create the live-band effect and bigger volume. It also supports 5.1/7.1 surround sound, so the device can be used as a speaker in the 5.1/7.1 surround sound system.

The phone also adopts Histen 5.0 technology to simulate surround sound effect, and with enhanced bass and optimized headphone performance for both live-streaming and gaming, you can enjoy immersive sound effect for movies or music.

Y9 2019 features the latest Karaoke Mode which can realize real-time headphone sound feedback, while the feature is also optimized for various karaoke, video and live-streaming apps.

Conclusion:

Firstly, The Huawei Y9 2019 is an affordable Smartphone for the young generation of gamers and photographers.

The build of the body and design makes the phone feel a like a flagship phone. But it also means that the phone can get quite slippery and have fingerprint markings on hot days. I didn’t pay too much attention to this initially, but I found myself preferring to have the transparent casing on it. So you might want to get a case for your phone if you plan on getting one.

The camera, for the most part works perfect, especially when considering the price range and the features it offers. Although there’s room for improvement in the low light photography department. This sometimes takes a toll on the Face ID feature too when there’s not enough light around the face.

Summing up, the things I have liked on this device are the display, design, and the most certainly the Battery life.

Should you buy the Huawei Y9 2019?

If you ask me, getting this phone is a good decision. I would say that if storage and gaming performance is a concern for you, the device pretty much lives up to your expectations.

Remember that it is still a budget/mid-range smartphone. It’s not looking to offer everything you would expect out of a flagship phone. But it sure packs more features at a cheap price. With that, the Y9 2019 does itself justice if you’re keen on getting a new smartphone that works smoothly. You might want to check this out.

The Huawei Y9 2019 is currently priced at Ksh. 24,990 and can be purchased at Huawei retail outlets, Telkom shops and on Jumia Kenya.

What are your thoughts on the recently launched Huawei Y9 2019? Will you be getting one? Do let us know.

Paris-based NEoT Offgrid Africa invests an undisclosed amount into Nigeria’s Rensource Energy

0
Rensource Energy, a Lagos-based distributed energy services company has received an investment of an undisclosed amount in its first microutility project Sabon Gari Energy by Paris-based NEoT Offgrid Africa.

NEoT Offgrid Africa, which is managed by NEoT Capital, is a platform investing in distributed renewable energy projects in Africa and is backed by infrastructure development giant, Meridiam, and France’s electric utility, Électricité de France (EDF) Group.

NEoT takes control of the board of Sabon Gari Energy Solutions, joining existing investors Rensource, Solad Power Holdings, Sissli, and System Trade Services.

The investment will be used to complete the purchase and installation of solar panels, power electronics, batteries and smart meters for the microutility, expanding energy provision to all merchants in Sabon Gari market.

“The Sabon Gari energy project is a perfect example of what we are looking to accomplish in Africa: deploying distributed solar energy solutions at scale to provide clean, reliable and competitive energy to customers. We are excited about this partnership with Rensource and look forward to replicating it in other markets,” said Pierre Devillard, CEO of NEoT Capital.

Launched in February 2018, Sabon Gari Energy is providing power to micro and small-and-medium enterprises at Sabon Gari Market in Kano, one of the biggest commercial centers in Nigeria’s second largest city.

Founded in 2015, Rensource, the developer and manager of Sabon Gari Energy, is rapidly transforming the status quo of energy provision in Nigeria. Rensource works with project sponsors to develop, finance, and manage decentralized energy projects that address the energy deficit in Africa’s most populous nation, providing reliable energy to consumer, small-business and industrial clients.

“NEoT’s investment is a critical validation of Rensource’s thesis that a decentralized model is the most sustainable and cost effective approach to solving Africa’s energy deficit. Not only does such a strategy tailor energy provision to end-users, it also reduces the strain on existing power infrastructure,” says Ademola Adesina, founder and CEO of Rensource.

This latest round of investment cements Rensource as the country’s market leader in decentralized energy provision and will serve as a springboard for rolling out more distributed energy projects to close Nigeria’s energy gap.
