Kenya to install CCTV on its border with Somali to keep away Al Shabaab

0

Surveillance_cameras Kenya is set to install a CCTV surveillance system on its border with Somali in a move to curb insecuity and terrorism suchas the magnitude of Westgate siege, Interior and Coordination of National Government, Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Ole lenku has said.

Speaking to CNN’s Nima Elbagir on Monday, Ole Lenku admitted that the incredibly porous, 800Kilometres Kenya-Somali border was a major ‘panya’ route for terrorists especially the Al Shabaab drawn from Somalia and hence the planned technological measures to keep them out of Kenya.

“The border is a major security concern as the points of entry are far too many. We are working on a surveillance system to show what is happening in the entire borderline. We are also putting up a command and control system that provides CCTV surveillance for the cities and also the border,” Ole Lenku told Nima during the interview.

However, the somali border CCTV surveillance might be a miss.

When asked about the network that was behind the Westgate attack and how much it was regional network, Ole Lenku explained, “There are a number of theories that are being put together. There’s the Entebbe theory telling how there is a movement that came to Kenya, went to Entebbe and then came back.”

“Forensic investigations are underway to ascertain reports that the Al Shabaab network that attacked Westage originally landed in Entebbe and then came over the border from Uganda.”

Ole Lenku also blamed corrupt security officers as a major setback to security adding that integrity will be a major consideration when recruiting new police officers going forward.

“People are noticing that there’s a new requirement for service in terms of integrity and that those who will not meet that threshold will not be allowed into their service,” he said adding on that the vetting process for police officer which began last week, will see a number of corrupt officers removed from the system.

The vetting exercise for police officers is being carried out because corruption has been a loophole and an avenue for insecurity according to Ole Lenku.

Asked what he would have done differently, Ole Lenku said, “We have a number of lessons learned from this Westgate attack. One of it is to synchronise the activities of our intelligence, our military and our police: a common standard operating procedure for the forces of the country is being worked on.”

“We are strengthening our response to disaster, and we got a lot of support from well-wishers, some specific country like Israel, Germany, the US and British have come in,” he said.

standard bank

Banking has switched gears and there fewer queues in the banking hall because a good number of the customers are now using their phones as banking halls.  Well, one can be allowed to think that in years to come all bank building will be eliminated and banking will involve customer and phone.

Contrary to what is expected Standard Bank has launched its new Generation 8 branches in selected markets with new technology and a new look-and feel based on updated branch layout principles.

For any bank to engage in bank renovation could be making a dangerous risk because this facilities are to be faced off pretty soon, but standard bank doesn’t consider this as a risk, in fact the bank thinks that the traditional method of banking will still be alive in Kenya, therefore to make sure that their customers have the best of everything they are making a mega transformation in their banks.

This renovation the bank says will provide a new generation of services which give positive, smart, value-added experiences to “connected” customers.

“Branches are still vital for interacting with our customers and developing long-term human relationships,” says Hannah Sadiki, head of customer channels at Standard Bank. “So we’ve created a banking experience that will deliver on their expectations, improve their interaction with our staff and provide enhanced value-added services in-branch for them to interface with while they wait.”

The first Gen 8 branches in service include Woodlands Boulevard in Pretoria and Bedford Centre in Bedfordview. The Alice Lane Branch in Sandton, and branches at the V&A Waterfront and Constantia Village, both in Cape Town, are due to open this month. Another three will be open by the end of this year, and an additional two to three next year.

So what is it about this renovation;

  •  A modern, warmer look and feel
  • Smart positioning of furniture, equipment and signage
  • Better positioning of staff, who have been trained to visually identify clients in need of assistance and improve queue management;
  • Seating innovations in the waiting area;
  • Self-service banking in waiting areas that have wireless connectivity
  • Given the rapid evolution of technology, smart, modular design has been incorporated to allow for the integration of new devices without having to reconstruct the entire space.

nokia-lumia-pressNokia Asha 501, Nokia Asha full touch devices, and Nokia Lumia phones users in Africa have a reason to smile as more content is coming their way.

Today, online gaming platform Kuluya, has said it has entered an exclusive partnership with Nokia to bring its games onto the Nokia Windows store for Asha and Lumia devices begining with its popular game Oga @ The Top. which had an over 60,000 plays in just 72 hours of its release.

Oga @ The Top was developed in lightening speed in the wake of the viral interview and PR gaffe from a senior Nigerian civil servant who was unable to tell an interviewer the website he wanted to promote. The Oga @ The Top case resonated with millions of Nigerians and inspired spin-offs including video remixes, blog posts, t-shirts, as well as Kuluya’s online game.

The Nokia deal is a win-win for both as it will see Kuluya’s games reach more players and also strenghthen Nokia content offerings.

Speaking on the new Nokia partnership, Kunle Ogungbamila, Head of Kuluya said, “We know that gaming will explode across the continent of Africa, just as it has in the West, usurping other forms of entertainment to become a multi-billion dollar generating industry. We also know that mobile is the prominent platform for content distribution in Africa, be it movies, news, music and, in this instance, gaming, so we see this partnership with Nokia as the beginning of an exciting and mutually beneficial content / platform relationship of the future.”

Kunle added that Nokia users will have the same dynamic user experience on their Asha or Lumia devices just as its on its own platform.

Nokia believes that as Africa’s youth continues to come online, with approximately 65% of the population under the age of 35, content partnerships such as this one aim to connect with this burgeoning online community.

Emmanuel Oluwatosin, Partner Manager, Nokia, West Africa, said: “Africa is a continent with great potential across all sectors. We are excited at the fact that the youths are looking inwards and taking advantage of the opportunities that are in abundance. Kuluya is leading the way in this regard and we are happy to work with them in providing great games for our consumers.”

Launched in October 2012, Kuluya develops cross-platform games with African characters as the focus.  The firm has launched 55 casual games and five mobile games since then. Just six months after its launch, Kuluya received a seed round that raised its value to $2Mn.

The Oga @ The Top game is available to download for free on the Nokia Windows Phone and for the Nokia Asha

Uganda Forensic Lab in Near Collapse

Forensic lab

The Acting Commissioner Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory (DGAL), Eric Atalao Dradrio has said that the machines for forensic investigations have broken down or expired due to lack of maintenance on them.

An article appearing in New Vision has detailed that the country’s forensic investigations could come to a halt anytime soon if nothing is done to repair and maintain the machines.

The commissioner revealed this information as he appealed to the members of parliament to consider increasing funding to the laboratories.

“Sometime we don’t have money to periodically service these machines,” Atalao said.

One problem that faces the laboratory is having old equipment. Some of the manufactures do not manufacture their spare parts anymore as the technology evolves.

Such outdated technology has forced the forensic department to still send samples to other countries such as India and South Africa.

The story is similar to neighbouring country Kenya, where the project to set up a modern forensics lab was engulfed in the Anglo Leasing scandal. This has stalled progress on establishing a laboratory in the country. But there are still efforts to establish one in Kenya.

Nigerian SMEs save 50% development cost on U-Mall – Netplus Advisory

1

Nigerian small and medium-scale enterprises save about 50% of development costs when they are on U-Mall, a platform developed by Netplus Advisory in partnership with United Bank for Africa (UBA).

In an exclusive chat, Wole Faroun, Managing Director of Netplus Advisory said the platform was developed to provide comprehensive e-commerce solutions to Nigerian businesses.

“With the online channel becoming increasingly adopted by consumers in Nigeria, it has become a viable channel for business however most businesses are unable to effectively take advantage due to cost and technical know-how hence the need for a solution like U-Mall,” he said.

In addition to saving costs in development, he said the turnaround time is also shorter as the platform is set up immediately.

“On timing, getting them setup is immediate – matter of minutes versus weeks/months it takes to setup an e-commerce website. On marketing spend the savings is around N100K per month for anyone really trying to be successful online. There are similar savings for logistics/order fulfillment/customer service. These are all taking care of on behalf of the merchant,” he said.

He added that the number of businesses on the platform is increasing.

He said: “We got over 100 businesses in the first week of launch. It’s been increasing ever since – but because of KYC involved, it takes time for the actual site to be made available to customers. The bank needs to do verification of the businesses.”

microsoft-ces-boothFour schools and eight teachers from across sub-Saharan Africa have been nominated amongst the world’s best as part of Microsoft’s 2014 class of Mentor Schools and the Inaugural Class of Expert Educators.

The schools include the Government Secondary School Jabi in Nigeria, the Agha Khan Academy in Kenya, Gayaza High School in Uganda and SARM State Secondary School in Mauritius. The four were chosen from over 250 global applicants in 80 countries to participate in the one year programme which recognise visionary educators using technology to improve student outcomes and equip them with 21st century skills.

According to Djam Bakhshandegi, Director of Corporate Citizenship and Partners in Learning, West East, Central Africa & Indian Ocean Islands,“At Microsoft, we strongly believe in the role that well-prepared educators play in helping today’s youth overcome the emerging opportunity divide and guiding them toward the education, skills and opportunities they need to prosper in the hyper-connected era.”

Microsoft believes that investing in education of youth in Africa will improve the potential for economic growth and development as nearly one in three people in sub-Saharan Africa are between the ages of 10 and 24 and would double by 2050, according to the World’s Youth 2013 Data Sheet.

Teachers had to be creative to be selected. Microsoft in the early years picked teachers who were using interactive whiteboards as a teaching tool but at the moment the firm is using 1:1 interactive, online education programs through mobile devices.

This is nott he first time Microsoft is doing this.

The firm has been offering educator and school programmes for 10 years via its education initiative, Partners in Learning, (Global YouthSpark initiative,  Imagine Cup, DigiGirlz, and DreamSpark) which helps teachers and schools around the world improve students’ experiences and skills through technology. In sub-Saharan Africa over 13 million students have benefitted from the programme to date.

The company has also signed an agreement with the University of the People to offer 1, 000 free scholarships to Africans as part of the 4Afrika Initiative.

“At Microsoft we are deeply committed to doing whatever it takes to effect a holistic transformation of learning. This isn’t transformation for the sake of change. How Kenyan Electronic Shops Use Sales Gimmicks To Attract Huge Profits

3

Shopping for the latest iphones, laptops, digital cameras, TVs, DVD players to mention a few goods sold at exclusively electronic shops has often been an enjoyable experience for many but not to one concerned customer who discovered an old trick salesmen use to lure customers and attract profits.

While shopping all over in Nairobi’s busy town centre for a phone, Mary’s final option was not to buy her new phone from an exhibition stall, but rather, one upscale electronics shops so as to buy a Sumsung Young phone on special offer at the price tag “Sh9,999”. Curious about the special offer, a sales attendant draws the her closer to admire the phone.

“This is the offer for the month,” explains the attendant flashing the phone noting that other phone assets come at a fee. Impressed, Mary buys the phone, giving the cashier Sh10,000. But as she gets the receipt and warranty details, the cashier looks at her with a “sorry” look appologising for not having loose change of a shilling. Mary empathises, has no qualms and walks away exited about her new purchase and friendly service.

Surprised, one would ask, “Isn’t one shilling still valuable for cash change?”

Though not new, this gimmick has quite benefitted a number of electronics’ shops that have price tags of Sh999, Sh9,999, Sh69,999 and so on. While the figure seems less and more affordable, using fewer digits, customers are drawn to purchase the products without understanding the value of one shilling. Yet, more than three quarters of Kenyans live on one US dollar a day, meaning that if they were to save a shilling a day, they would have set aside Sh365 a year – a fete for primary school pupil to receive such an amount as a Christmas present.

Other than that, minimizing the value of a coin, would mean that if a shop would sell 10 phones each day, appologising for not having “change of one shilling” or even Sh50 cents, the profits made would translate to Sh60 each week; Sh240 each month and Sh2,880 each year.

Thus, if would be wiser to ask for “loose change” as the Commercial Bank of Kenya states that it has not withdrawn or demonetised any of these coins: 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents, Sh1, Sh5, Sh10, Sh20, and Sh40 and they remain valid. According to CBK Governor Prof Njuguna Ndirangu, they are also the Legal Tender in Kenya as per provisions of the aforementioned Act.

Kenyan Government Changes The Laptop Project Tender Rules

laptop

In a bid to cut down cost, the government of Kenya has resorted to making changes to the rules governing the tender for the laptop project.

One notable thing is that there will not be any middle men involved; it has been restricted to laptop manufacturers only.

The government has also left room to negotiate prices with the shortlisted suppliers.

It will also take the responsibility of moving the laptops from the point of entry to schools, be it the sea port or the airport to the schools.

The announcement came as the government extended from November 14 to November 21. The tender for supply of the laptops was re-advertised on October 16th after the previous one was cancelled in August.

As of Thursday, only 58 firms had bought the bidding document compared to 126 in the initial tendering exercise.

“This process is a bit different from the initial one because we have opted for a very selective process that allows the government to negotiate with the shortlisted vendors to arrive at a reasonable price,” said Prof Kaimenyi, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education.

The bid bond has been reduced to Ksh50 million from Ksh228 million and the performance bond to Ksh150 million from Ksh3 billion to increase participation.

The number of laptops to be bought had also gone down to 1.28 million from 1.38 million. 20,5337 laptops for teacher will be bought separately.

Some of the bidders include HP, Huawei, Samsung Electronics, Haier Technologies and ZTE Corporation who participated in the initial tendering process that was cancelled in August.

There are plans to spend Ksh17.4 billion annually for three years to buy the laptops, develop digital content, build teachers’ capacity and build computer laboratories for Class Four to Class Eight pupils.

Money has also been set aside to buy 20,637 printers and to distribute a similar number of projectors to each primary school. Some 150 trainers, mostly from secondary schools, have been selected for training.

Intelligent Energy Launches Upp in Africa to Charge Devices on the go

intelligent_energy_2012_highlightsLondon-based Intelligent Energy,  a power technology company has launched Upp – a personal charger for portable devices with USB ports such as smartphones, feature phones, eReaders, tablets, portable gaming consoles, as well as digital cameras.

Launched at the AfricaCom in Cape Town last week, Upp delivers at least one week of charge even to the most demanding, power-hungry smartphones. The device uses innovative fuel cell technology and has the ability to charge and power devices just like electricity.

According to Henri Winand, CEO of Intelligent Energy, “Upp represents a new category of energy device, and are excited about the transformational implications for the portable electronics market and the consumer. With the growing demand for portable devices, mobile and cloud services, consumers want the energy independence to keep their devices connected and powered-up all the time.”

Set to be available in shops in December this year in South Africa and Nigeria, the $200 worth Upp provides instant energy on-the-go. Its Intelligent Auto Shutoff feature conserves energy and protects battery life of the electronic device it is charging. It also comes with a free iOS and Android app for predictive usage statistics as well as user management.

UPP_11.11.13.jpg.700x600_q85Upp works simply, the Upp fuel cell takes hydrogen provided by the Upp fuel cartridge and combines it with air to produce clean electricity with water vapour as a by-product. Users simply need to connect the fuel cell to a replaceable fuel cartridge to experience instant energy for their devices. In addition to the fuel cartridge being replaceable, Intelligent Energy has adopted a socially responsible approach to fuel replenishment, by enabling the reuse of each cartridge multiple times.

Amar Samra, Managing Director of Consumer Electronics, Intelligent Energy said: ““Batteries need help: their capabilities haven’t kept pace with innovation in smart connected portable devices. Given that 75 percent of the global population relies on the mobile phone to stay connected, the more you want to do with your device, the more energy you need. Consumers need a reliable source of personal and portable energy, and Upp gives you that critical uptime when you really need it.”

Africans need to understand how to speak the language of technology – Francis Madojemu

0

Francis Madojemu, the head of Nigeria’s iBridgeHub and initiator of iCODE has called for a shift in the technology paradigm in Africa. According to him, the continent needs to understand how to speak the language of technology and not just remain consumers of products made elsewhere.

“Computer has got to speak to us, we also have to speak to the computer in order to accomplish things,” he said.

He added: “A lot of people know about Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. But unfortunately, they only know about the finished products and not how the products were developed.”

Madojemu’s organization through its iCODE initiative is introducing children to the basics of coding.

“We are just trying to introduce people to the behind-the-scenes of the technology that is running the world today so that they can apply it and use it to change the world,” he said.

On the reason they are focusing on the children, he said the goal is to invest in their future in order to fill the vacuum that current exists in Nigeria and the world.

“There is a huge need for people with such understanding in the world, talk less of Nigeria. Even the Computer Society of Nigeria (COSON) has revealed that we have the problem of lack of people who can code and understand how to build technology you can apply,” he said.

According to him, technology does not discriminate based on color or race as long as the right instruction is given.

He said: “When are we going to start having technology we can speak Yoruba to? Computer is not discriminatory; it doesn’t care if you are white or black, Yoruba or Igbo. If you give it what it needs it will give you back what you asked for.”

Does the Curtailing of Press Freedom affect Internet Connectivity in Ethiopia?

0

Ethiopia

A United Nation’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) report has recently placed the country at 151 out of 157 in terms on internet connectivity making it one of the least countries with internet penetration.

Ethiopia has around 100 million people second only to Nigeria in terms of population but has a meager 1 – 2 percent internet penetration.

“A lot of African countries’ ICT sector officials complain that they are not getting sufficient budget for ICT projects,” said Andrew Rugege, the ITU’s regional director for Africa. “Private investors in the sector must be encouraged and this can help to prompt the African countries’ status into a better position.”

Even so, the need of internet and broadband access is there in the country. But legislation has been seen as somewhat a hindering factor.

Is this due to the country’s policies on internet freedoms?

Recently the country is planning to put up a legislation framework that will be able to monitor activities on the internet. The Information Network Security Agency (INSA) will look to investigate ‘suspicious’ networks, computers, websites, television, radio and social media that would negatively affect the well being of the country.

Such piece of legislation usually deters those who want to use the internet to voice their concerns. So even in the event that the country would see increase in its internet penetration rate, will the users feel free to indulge in its use?

SEACOM’s Cloud business unit, Pamoja  has invested in a fresh new look website to reflect its growth and its value proposition to the market.

The construction of the new corporate website was outsourced to an experienced services provider with the main requirement to showcase Pamoja’s range of new services and an updated business model.

Syncrony Internet Services was selected as the provider of choice, based on its extensive experience in the market, its understanding of the corporate online environment and its level of service. The current website is in the first phase of a multi-phase design which will see partner portals integrated with the Company’s corporate site.

“We had to ensure that the project would not impact on operations,” says Albie Bester, General Manager at Pamoja. “We had to focus on our core business and having Syncrony on board allowed us to do that.” Bester points out that the new site, integrated with social media, is also mobile device friendly and can be viewed from all major mobile platforms. The website will become the primary communications channel for interaction with resellers. They will have secure logins which will allow them to gain access to software and marketing material.

In 2011 SEACOM incorporated Pamoja as its Value Added Services business unit, and the strategic arm in leading its entry into content aggregation and associated Cloud computing services.

Pamoja’s Cloud services business model is built on the growing demand for IT-as-a-Service from small and medium enterprises (SME), coupled with the need for service providers to increase the value of their existing offerings and grow broadband revenue. Pamoja is building a SME Cloud services marketplace which it offers to channel partners and service providers to on-sell under their own brand (white-labelled) to their customer base.

With access to dedicated SEACOM bandwidth, Pamoja will be able to deliver Cloud services from any of its datacentres in Africa, thereby bringing the Cloud to Africa.
