Nakuru County’s Controversial Wi-Fi Project ongoing

0

Nakuru County’s KSh200 million-worth Wi-Fi project will be rolled out to all areas around the central business district in August, the county’s government has said.

The project faced unprecedented network coverage hitches that hindered its roll-out last month.

The new development comes after several interest groups filed a lawsuit against the county government for misappropriating funds allocated for the Wi-Fi project. The groups demanded that the county government comes clean by accounting for the funds.

Nakuru County residents have also complained of poor speed and absolute negligence in ensuring that the Wi-Fi covered the 10-kilometre radius within the expected time frame. Poor connection, equipment and expertise have been largely blamed.

The project is intended to simplify governance in Nakuru and its environs by facilitating public participation through the social media or the county government’s site. Still, State House digital team Project and the county government have not provided any funds for the roll out.

Other reports indicate that State House’s Digital Media, which is headed by Dennis Itumbi, has plans to involve experts from Canada to install Wi-Fi in several Kenyan towns.

Popular dating app embroiled in Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Popular dating and hook-up app Tinder is embroiled in a court case over sex discrimination and sexual harassment.Tinder Dating and hook-up APP

Whitney Wolfe, the company’s co-founder, has filed a lawsuit accusing her fellow senior executives of sexually harassing and discriminating against her.

Wolfe claims that Justin Mateen, the Chief Marketing Officer, is verbally abusive and controlling. She accused him of calling her a “whore” and “slut” repeatedly, including in front of Sean Rad, the company’s chief.

According to CNN, Wolfe and Mateen had a romantic history. As their relationship turned bad, Wolfe says that Rad and Mateen informed her that the co-founder title was to be taken from her. She also claims that Rad and Mateen told her that she is a “24-year-old girl with little experience” and that she made the company “look like a joke.”

Mateen is also said to have told Wolfe that both Snapchat and Facebook have no such thing as ‘girl founders’ , hence she makes Tinder look like ‘some accident’.

Wolfe presented her resignation after Mateen called her a whore at a company event. According to Wolfe, the resignation is in exchange for severance in addition to vesting of her company stock. Rad rejected Wolfe’s offer and fired her.

IAC, Tinder parent’s company that was also named as a defendant in the lawsuit, stated that it suspended Mateen due to an ongoing internal investigation.

An IAC representative also said in an emailed statement that throughout the whole process, it became clear that Mateen sent Wolfe private messages containing inappropriate content.

He further stated that the company unequivocally condemns such messages, though believes that Wolfe’s allegations regarding Tinder and its management are baseless.

The lawsuit describes Wolfe, the former face of Tinder, as responsible for marketing the dating app to fellow young women, which acts as a tool for empowerment.

Tinder has a large user base in Kenya.

OurHood Wants to Connect & Secure Neighbourhoods in South Africa

0

background-pathSouth Africa’s OurHood, a free private social network recently secured seed funding from a small consortium of international investors who see the enormous potential in it in a mission to promote safer and better connected neighbourhoods– by linking the digital and physical worlds in the country and beyond.

“Funding was secured post us having built a great product and us having made significant progress in developing marketing and distribution channels. We will soon be looking for a Series A investors,” said Bruce Good, co-founder Our Hood.

The platform provides a digital platform for residents of clearly-defined neighbourhoods to engage with one another via mobile phones, laptops or tablets by allowing them to instantly communicate with one another, post notices, report any suspicious or criminal activity and as well buy, sell or lend things.

The site also allows users to get recommendations for tradesmen and other services in a community, report issues relating to hood upkeep (Faulty street lights, potholes etc), buy electricity, milk, or other basic goods and have them delivered, share rides, advertise events and organize activities and take advantage of unique deals available to clearly-defined communities only.

Co-founded by Bruce Good and William Mellor, the two had in 2010 founded Name Your Hood (www.nameyourhood.co.za) – an inclusive digital interactive campaign to unearth creative and functional neighbourhood names in South Africa’s urban centres. The bottom-up naming campaign created awareness around neighbourhoods and culminated in the the development of www.capetownhoods.co.za – digital sites for various communities.

Name Your Hood has received national and global acclaim and has been recently been declared a World Design Capital Project 2014.

Bruce won a fellowship with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Name Your Hood wass the local partner of the Pioneer of Health Challenge 2013 – partnering GOOD Worldwide and the Gates Foundation.

Will is arguably one of South Africas most succesful digital entrepreneurs. Having started the successful www.2oceansvibe.com in 2002, his media group, 2oceansvibe Media, incorporates 2oceansvibe News and 2oceansvibe. The website (2oceansvibe.com) speaks to 500,000 unique users per month.

Speaking to TechMoran, Bruce says they were inspired simply by the need connect residents in neighbourhoods in Cape Town. “OurHood offers us a real chance to make a safer and more connected country and continent.  There is no single, consistent digital, or offline platform for residents to use to connect with their neighbours in South Africa, or universally, at present and we saw the opportunity to extend our work in neighbourhoods internationally,” Bruce told TechMoran.

The past few years have seen a proliferation of stand-alone community or local neighbourhood sites, yet none are scalable, private and able to offer a one-stop solution to neighbourhood communication. OurHood aims to provide a dynamic platform to consolidate a number of individual websites which residents have at their disposal

OurHood is chiefly being rolled out in Cape Town and Johannesburg, though it has groups in other towns and also a couple of international neighbourhoods are live. The two say they will establish a website for clearly-defined neighbourhoods in cities. Access to each of these neighbourhood networks will be limited to residents who reside in defined neighbourhoods.

Users will be required to provide proof of their address prior to accessing the site and only then can they contribute to the discussions and posts. The discussions will be grouped, with content differentiated by unique silos.

“OurHood will capitalise on the global trends that make the timing of the launch perfect. These include: more engaged residents and active citizens, collaborative consumption, increased use of mobile and decreasing data costs, local advertising and peer-to-peer marketing. Our digital assets will be the glue that pulls together and mobilises these newly-awakened neighbourhoods and communities,” says Bruce.

OurHood is free to residents but revenue will be generated in a number of ways, including advertising and affiliate income. Of huge financial interest will be the social graphing and data intelligence that will be produced.

OurHood aims to speak to groups of like-minded people from very similar socio-economic and LSM groups. The platform offers targeted opportunities for potential brands and advertisers, at a low cost.

The founders say they have opted for the ‘lean’ approach and will now be embarking on the next phase of development – which includes building native apps to not rely solely on a mobile-responsive site. Because it is new, the two aim at getting users to make a daily habit of visiting the site. At the moment, Facebook is there major competition and a couple of businesses making noises about this space though they are not as popular. In the US – www.nextdoor.com is a leader and is seemingly leading the way in neighbourhood social networking.

“Our site is unique and provides resources which make it locally relevant,” says Bruce, “South Africa faces the scourge of crime and it is belief that a stronger, better connected neighgbourhood will be a safer once – hence our focus on crime and notice boards. We also provide a window into e-commerce sites and others all centre on making anyone’s life in a neighbourhood better, safer and more efficient.”

Facebook is a useful tool for residents to host conversations – yet these groups have limited functionality and don’t permit a range of discussions simultaneously says Bruce as it also requires that every resident be on Facebook. OurHood will provide a dynamic platform to consolidate a number of individual sites and effectively consolidates a range of stand-alone apps.

Our Hood is well positioned to make huge inroads into the neighbourhood market – an area that the founders have focused on for over 3 years. They are working very closely with local civic bodies, neighbourhood watch groups and local authorities and have already developed a strong social media following through our existing businesses.

About Cape Town’s startups scene Bruce says there’s much potential.

“Cape Town is a great place to do business. There is strong entrepreneurial culture in the city and with it now being the World Design Capital 2014, the halogen lamp is pointed in our direction. Local media groups have done particularly well and a number of great companies have their roots here. An area of concern is the lack of a mature VC  industry here – hence entrepreneurs often need to look beyond our borders. ”

The only challeges Bruce says are skills.

“I’ve noticed a lack of good development talent lately – it seems a number of start ups struggle to find the right skills in what is such a crucial area,” said Bruce.

Every day, Bruce says they are driven by the steadfast belief that their product is not only necessary, but has the potential to improve lives.

“At the same time the business model is compelling and the opportunities are enormous.  There is something very special about starting a business from scratch and the energy we derive from seeing users respond positively when using our site is seriously rewarding,” Bruce concludes.

Google bans porn and overt sexual content ads

0

Google has announced a new policy that will see porn sites that look to advertise on its search engine disallowed from using its promotional services.Google bans porn ads

The search giant placed a new policy on Monday that forbids the promotion of sexually themed sites from its advertising network. The change is targeted at sites that advertise “graphic depictions of sexual acts” or hardcore ones, including oral sex and masturbation.

The ad network, known as AdWords, is a Google platform for advertisers seeking to put ads on properties across the Web as well as on Google sites. Advertising is the company’s core source of income. Recently, Google made $13.8 billion in advertisement revenue, which accounts for 90-percent of the company’s total income.

A Google representative refused to put into percentage the number of sexually explicit websites that advertise on AdWords. When asked what motivated the change, the representative merely said that the company updates its policy regularly and has had for a long time strict rules when it comes to content that is sexually explicit.

Some within the porn industry stated they were surprised by Google’s announcement.

Theo Sapoutzis, CEO and Chairman of AVN Media Network told CNBC that in 2002, he was among the very first advertisers for AdWords. He further said that this is something that has been untouched for 12 years, so people must not expect sudden change.

This is actually not the first time that Google has had control over adult content. Last year June, Google-owned blogger stopped porn blogs from earning money through ads on adult websites. Although porn ads are prohibited now on AdWords, the updated policy still allows ads to promote things such as adult dating sites and strip clubs.

In June 2014, Google sent out an email to companies informing them of the new changes.

The developments come as Google proceeds to invest in other advertising forms such as online video. Last month, Google declared publicly that it had acquired mDialog, which is a company that deals with video advertising technology. The startup works hand in hand with big media companies and allows them deliver and manage video advertising throughout various screens, including devices that run on Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.

Samsung to halt production of plasma TVs

0

Samsung has declared openly that come November 30, 2014, it will stop manufacturing PDP TVs (plasma televisions). The electronic giant looks to focus on producing ultra-high-definition (UHD) and curved TVs.Samsung Plasma TVs

Samsung further said that it plans to stay committed to providing customers with products that satisfy their needs.

It is not surprising that Samsung has dumped plasma. Similar measures have been taken by Pioneer, Hitachi, Sony and Panasonic, who backed off from the sector in recent years. According to the Tech Radar, LG is likely to follow suit.

Plasma screens have been praised for their brightness, high frame rates and deep black levels. They are considered as perfect for watching films and sports. Their major setback is high-energy consumption. Additionally, they are also considerably bulkier than the current and more popular light-emitting diode (LED) and liquid-crystal display (LCD) TVs.

The major challenge is making UHD plasmas yet they are the future of big TVs. Plasma TVs are a lot better than LCD or LED in terms of image quality. Despite this, they cannot be made as thin as LEDs.

The introduction of increasingly advanced LED TVs that have better brightness, colour gamut and black levels than plasmas have given Samsung some grounds to prolong the production of plasma screens.

It is understandable that home-cinema connoisseurs will always have a soft spot for plasmas though they have simply been superseded technologically.

CEO Weekends: Hema Wants to Replace Traditional ‘911’ Services

10440918_10203122125805265_4941793823249491487_n
Jemimah (left) Showing how the HEMA works

Nairobi-based Safaricom Academy is among the leading hubs incubating a range of innovations that are tipped to shake East Africa’s tech scene in the future. TechMoran met Jemimah Kiiru, one of the developers of a new Kenyan app called HEMA that is promising to just trash ‘911’ service. This is what this innovator had to say.

Tell us how your application –HEMA App- works

HEMA (Health Emergency Management App) searches and locates hospitals near the user through the device(s) they are using (Phone/Tablet). The App also provides additional data about the hospitals nearby, such as contact information, available facilities and directions to the hospital. Additionally, user information that is vital for diagnosis is also availed on the app once a valid user logs in.

What was your inspiration behind your app?

I was inspired by the need to have information about the location of hospitals and the kind of services they offer. I could imagine a situation where I was out of Nairobi and I needed medical help. Literarily, it was exhausting locating a hospital in that scenario.

Jemimah Kiiru
Jemimah Kiiru

Is it complete?

No. We are just finishing up with Phase 1 of the app. We are currently recruiting tester to pilot the project. At the same time, we are doing more research.

How many are you in this particular project? Give a little background information about your partner(s)?

We are two. Michael Kabugi is the developer and my business partner. We came together to develop this application combining our different skills. I have knowledge of the health facilities in the country and he has the tech development skills.

How long have you been working on your app?

We have been working on it for 6 months now.

How has iLab or Safaricom helped you in building the app?

iLab has mentored use during this process. They inspire us to deliver. They mentor and offer learning options. They were the first people to let us know we had something worth pursuing. iLab has also offered us an opportunity to pitch and meet investors.

Micheal Kibugi
Michael Kibugi

Who is your target market? And why would they want to work with you?

We are targeting all Kenyans with smartphones as well as medical insurance companies. The insurance companies would greatly benefit from issuing the app as a value added service to its clients.

From what you have explained it’s easy to tell that your target users are at the range of middle-class and high, will you consider the lower class in future?

Yes, assuming those (middle-class and high class) are the majority users of smart phones. In regards to how the app works especially with mapping, we are not considering an option for phones that cannot support it

What’s the difference between you and 911?

We have integrated mapping and provided quick access to verified vital patient information. That gives you the option to help yourself where you can or ask for help. In the ideal situation where 911 would be able to use your phone to track your location, then we would have a competitor who we would be willing to work with.

Given that some medical cases are sensitive do you think you will get people to use your app?

Yes. The app is specifically to be used when in need of emergency help. I imagine no matter how sensitive a situation is, at that point all one needs is to be assisted. The user information is stored securely on our servers and is issued voluntarily. We have also implemented password security to keep personal and sensitive information safe.

Won’t it take long in the case of an emergency situation…let’s say if a person has fainted or broken a bone?

I imagine not. Say your friend broke their leg during a training session. You have no idea where the closest hospital is. On top of that, they are insured with AAR and you’re not sure if the closest hospital to you accepts the AAR card. That is where HEMA comes in. You can opt to drive there using the directions on the app or request for an ambulance from the hospital.

Speaking of fainting, how will you get information from an unconscious person?

The app is tailored for use by conscious persons. So hopefully the person near them has the app. However, a situation like fainting is something you feel before you actually collapse. If the user had the chance to ask for assistance, I imagine the ambulance would be able to find them using their phone’s location. If the unconscious person is taken to a facility that has access to the HEMA database, the patient’s information can be retrieved fast and easily. This provides the hospital with the patient’s vital information such as their allergies, blood group and known or existing conditions that would be important for diagnosis and/or treatment.

Any pilot project done so far?

We are currently recruiting users to test the app.

Have you approached any investors? If so how did it go?

We have been approached by an investor though we want to have a complete product before we venture in that direction.

Anything else we need to know about you or the app

The whole point of designing and developing this app is to help Kenyans by providing access to information about the healthcare facilities close to them and their location. All these are available at their fingertips. The app is currently available on android platform for mobile phones and tablets. The App versions for other platforms are already under development and will be coming up soon.

“We urge our users to flag any ads or sellers that may be indicative of animal cruelty or mistreatment on the site,” says Cobbledick. “We work with law enforcement and animal welfare to investigate these ads on a case-by-case basis, but do rely solely on our users when it comes to reporting incidences that occur off-site.”

South Africans planning to visit Asia Pacific region will soon be allowed to use inflight gadgets, as Air New Zealand will from 16 July permit air travelers to use them during flights.

Once South Africa Nationals board South Africa Airways – the national airline of South Africa that connects with Air New Zealand in Perth or Hong Kong, it would be possible for them to use their phones, e-readers, tablets and MP3 players from gate-to-gate.

CEO Weekends: Ericsson 5G delivers 5 Gbps speeds

0

cloudEricsson has achieved speeds of 5 Gbps in live, over-the-air demonstrations of the company’s pre-standard 5G network technology despite 5G implementation in commercial mobile networks being expected in 2020.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report (June, 2014), 85 percent of North American mobile subscriptions will be LTE by 2019. This high penetration of LTE indicates that North America could be one of the first regions to adopt 5G. At the same time, Japan and South Korea are also likely to benefit from early 5G availability with trials already announced by both NTT DOCOMO and SK Telecom.

A regional appendix of Ericsson Mobility Report shows LTE subscription penetration had already reached over 30 percent in Japan and over 50 percent in South Korea – the highest in the world.

Seizo Onoe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer at NTT DOCOMO, says:  “5G promises significant performance enhancements to support future new applications that will impact both users and industry. To proceed with our joint project on 5G field trial further, we are very glad about Ericsson’s success in demonstrating the real potential of 5G radio access technologies at this early stage.”

With 5G, the report forecasts a 10-time growth in mobile data traffic between 2013 and 2019 and highlights three to four times growth in the number of active cellular M2M devices by 2019.

Alex Jinsung Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of ICT R&D Division at SK Telecom, says:  “SK Telecom plans to take the lead in 5G wireless services so we are pleased to see the progress that Ericsson has already made with their live demonstration of 5G performance.  5G will build upon the investment that we have made in Long Term Evolution and expand our service offering to all of our customers.”

Sathya Atreyam, Research Manager Wireless Network Infrastructure at IDC, says: “Though the standard is not yet defined, 5G has already evolved from a technology vision to a network and business planning consideration for operators. It is important for network equipment vendors — like Ericsson — to demonstrate the potential of 5G as a means to begin creating a demand in the communications ecosystem.

Johan Wibergh, head of Business Unit Networks, says:  “5G will impact both the access and core of mobile networks so we are working closely with leading operators, including NTT DOCOMO and SK Telecom, to ensure a practical and proactive evolution. The development of advanced radio technologies is one of the first critical steps in the realization of a 5G future.”

The live demonstration employs an innovative new radio interface concept and advancedMultiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology to achieve the record-breaking results. Ericsson 5G network development activity includes new antenna technologies with wider bandwidths, higher frequencies and shorter transmission time intervals. Radio base stations built with baseband units and radio units are being developed specifically for 5G trials. Small cells in a heterogeneous network environment, new frequency bands (including 15 GHz) and high-speed, high-capacity backhaul transmission are also key 5G focus areas for Ericsson.

With faster speeds, lower latency and better performance in highly dense areas, 5G represents an evolution of the user experience, but it will also enable new device-to-device and M2M applications that will impact both consumers, such as traffic safety control, tactile internet, and industry, for example sensors or capillary networks.

Though 5G standards are still in early development and new spectrum allocations are still to be considered, Ericsson’s live demonstration is a clear reflection of the company’s technology leadership.

The report however does not say much about Africa where most of the countries are on 3G network while some have adopted the 4G network.

Industry players Push For More Punitive Sanctions on Errant Manufacturers

food

Multi-sectoral players in Kenya’s manufacturing industry have urged the government and consumers to expose and punish manufacturers who engage in unethical practices to gain unfair advantage.

Speaking at the one-day workshop dubbed ‘Food Additives and Food Safety’ that was held yesterday at Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health Fred Segor noted that the key objective of the Government is consumer protection, hence the government and other industry stakeholders need to collaborate.

“This (collaboration) is important since it can ensure there is variety in food additives and better quality of the same. Consumers need to make informed decisions. However, they can only do this where there is clarity on the substances involved,” said Prof Segor.

The panel of industry experts also urged the Government to augment its efforts in validating and endorsing “regulated” use of food additives in the industry as a way of protecting ethical businesses, protecting jobs and the economic support ecosystems.

“The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS) needs to check that manufacturers use allowable levels of additives. When additives are used to mask certain deficiencies in the product, then you are not only putting the consumer at risk, but also encouraging unfair competition. Consumers should also know what to look for,” urged Prof Imungi.

Clarity to inform consumer choice is a major concern for regulation. This was articulated at the conference by a regulator panel that included KeBS and Ministry of Health.

Dr. Wamwari Waichungo, Coca-Cola’s Vice President for Global Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, said: “We need to alleviate consumer fears. There must be harsh and punitive measures for those who mislead consumers and deliberately adulterate their products. But the whole industry also needs to be accountable.”

The multi-sectoral forum brought together participants from the local food industry, researchers from academia, regulatory agencies, consumer groups and media. It was organised by Coca-Cola, KeBS, Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), Unilever and JKUAT among other stakeholders.

How Everything Sells On OLX

0

To date, we have been accustomed to buying and selling goods with cash in any market. But with the advent of Internet, many classifieds markets like OLX have emerged attracting diverse ways of buying or selling goods and services of which, Techmoran highlights the pros and cons of each mode of payment often experience by buyers and sellers.

Since OLX was launched in 2006 it has spread to over 106 countries attracting a diverse range of buyers and sellers thanks to the high subscription of internet through the years.

Over the years although internet in Africa has been limited by a lower penetration rate compared to the rest of the world, internet subscription has risen from two per cent in 2005 to 16 per cent last year.  That in turn has increased number of buyers and sellers that chose OLX as an ideal online classifieds for advertising. However, buyers have often had challenges and benefits whenever they purchase goods on one of the world’s largest Classifieds, through cash, cheque or online fund transfer payments.

“I have registered a product with OLX for selling, I got a message from them that they will sell the product within a week and to register I need 3,500, 6500 and 10,000 (Rupees) and they give a bank account number,” complained Sam, an OLX user based in India, who thought the services were absolutely free of charge.

Nevertheless, OLX informed him that they would gladly fulfill his requirements within a day. All one has to do is receive a registration attachment via email that would be printed out, filled and scaned back to the email id. OLX has some registration charges which are mentioned in registration form. Payment mode is either by cheque, cash or online fund transfer, they say.

Cash payment

Cash payment attracts benefits as well as challenges. Research has found that consumers spend less when they pay through cash in comparison to swiping credit or debit cards because, they are likely to be more careful about how much they buy. Moreover, cash payment saves the hustle of having the risk of information personal information being stole in a data breach. However, when purchasing products through OLX, the downside of using cash as a mode of payment is that many consumers based in far away countries prefer to ask additional information such as one’s ZIP code and email address so that they can market to you later on. Thus, with cash, while no one asks for your personal details, it eliminates email marketing and some offers one is likely to receive.

Online fund transfer

Online banking is gradually becoming a common mode of payment. One can easily access a record of transactions done online. Researchers say that online banking makes one plan their finances easily through the records of transactions kept. One can easily access the information from anywhere across the globe via internet. Moreover, it would eliminate the need for stamps while protecting buyers from the check being misplaced in the mail. One would need to fill out the information once and then simply select the selected profile each time one pays a bill online. With online fund transfer, you can access the history of transactions of which can help one find out the amount of a transaction after have misplacing a receipt. Moreover, it allows you to find about unauthorized transactions, helping you to resolve the issues fast. However, the downside of online fund transfer is that safety or privacy can be breached. Thus, OLX users are advised to clear cookies from a public computer after each banking session. Passwords too are expected to be long enough to prevent accounts from being hacked by unauthorized signers.

Procedure for making OLX transactions

After receiving a registration form and amount, OLX would ensure to sell your products within a day after getting your registration form and amount of funds. It would then send users a gift at a given address that users would receive it within 24 hours.

With OLX, users can pay the amount of registration selected such as that of the one, two or three year plan of which can be changed after completing a minimum of six months. Users will get their price at your doorstep within 24 hours of which, they provide the address in the olx registration form.

Then, in 24 hours OLX staff would reach at one’s address and verify one’s product and give the form to fill for ownership agreement.

But if a user would want to cancel a registration for any reason, he or she would have to ask for the cancellation form to be filled and sent back. A user would receive refunds in 24 hours and have to return the free gift back to the company.

If a user agrees to sell goods to an OLX employee, then employees would provide you the amount on same time for your goods at a negotiable demanding price.

However, if the potential buyer or seller is not in your area, you can make the registration with any OLX branch in your country and you can make the good deal for your product. And if you receive an email saying you won a prize and should pay for its shipping, do not reply but contact our customer service team

In all OLX wishes all users a successful transaction via its website www.olx.com.

Advertising Online will cut costs, Kenyan ministries told

0

Kenyan state agencies and ministries have been advised to adopt online advertisements  in order to cut down on their expenses on communication services.Kenyan ministries to advertise online

Cabinet Secretary for Information Fred Matiang’i said that the move would in turn help reduce the government’s advertising expenditure from KSh2.8 billion to about KSh1 billion per year. He further stated that the new directive expects all state corporations, government ministries and foreign missions notices, and advertisements to be published by other more cost-efficient means — preferably the electronic media.

The Daily Nation reported that the order that took effect on Tuesday would also see the Government Advertising Unit (GAU) established under the Information ministry. Its major responsibility will be to coordinate and handle the procurement of each advertising service for the government as well as other state companies.

Mr. Matiang’i also noted that the move would help harmonize ongoing efforts to reduce operations cost in public institutions.

Under this new framework, all county governments, foreign missions, companies and government ministries are required to present their public notices and advertisements to the new unit, which would afterwards decide whether to put them on an online platform or in the print media.

The change has a likelihood of affecting media houses advertising revenue that greatly depend on the government as a business source.

App Gives Diabetics Sigh of Relief during Ramadan

0

Diabetic mobile appSenegalese developers have come up with a new mobile app that assists people with diabetes manage their health during Ramadan. The app, dubbed mRamadan, is expected to reduce the number of hospitalizations that tend to pike during holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

mRamadan is hyped as ‘quite useful to diabetics’ since it enables them to receive free text messages daily with recommendations for fasting during, before and after the Ramadan.

Although Islam excuses people who are too old, young, not in perfect health or pregnant from fasting, cases where diabetics have tried to stay away from food and drink during Ramadan have been quiet high. Instances where the diabetics have discontinued taking insulin injections to regulate blood glucose levels have been a concern prompting the need to come up with the app.

Failure to continue taking the insulin during the period has put the patients at a greater risk of getting hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, since whenever they fast their diabetes becomes less controlled. Diabetics are also at a more risk of getting dehydrated. The app is expected to address the issues. The app will advise patients with conditions like chronic kidney problems via text messages on how to manage their conditions.

Each day, diabetics receive free text messages with advice about what they should or not do. A number of the messages remind people to take at least one litre of water every morning before fasting. The diabetics may also be advised on whether to adjust the dosage and timing of medications and to restrain from consuming sugary foods in the evening.

Once the holy month of Ramadan is over, patients will keep receiving messages that advice them on the importance of visiting a doctor. This is expected to help them to live active and healthy lifestyles by keeping their conditions under control.

The app is part of ‘Be Healthy Be Mobile program,’ a combined initiative by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and World Health Organization (WHO) targeted at assisting countries to fight against non-communicable diseases.

Rocket Internet Launches SpaceWays |New On-Demand Storage Service

0
header_testimonialLargest internet incubator incubator Rocket Internet has today launched SpaceWays, an on-demand storage service in London targeting the city’s highly mobile population.
SpaceWays provides a flexible on-demand storage solution for £6 per month in its large heavy-duty boxes and free pick-up service that eliminates the hassle of bringing items to a remote self-storage location. Boxes can be returned for £19, irrespective of how many boxes are returned, and delivery can be arranged for a convenient time for the customer. The company works with professional drivers to provide reliable customer service and ensure the safe handling of all items, which are then stored in SpaceWays’ CCTV-monitored storage facility just outside the city.According to Rob Rebholz, co-founder at SpaceWays, “We are excited to bring SpaceWays to life and provide an affordable, simple and convenient storage solution for all Londoners. SpaceWays will revolutionise the way people store items that they don’t need on a daily basis or don’t have room for.”

The average UK family home has declined in size by two square meters from 98.8m² to 96.8m² in the last decade, according to a 2013 report published by financial services firm Liverpool Victoria. As a result, people are often dissatisfied with the amount of space in their homes as the Royal Institute of British Architects revealed recently. According to their study 57% of people surveyed felt there was not enough storage space in their homes. SpaceWays thus aims to provide a highly flexible and innovative storage solution to London’s residents and even SMEs that lack space.

Underlining the potential of SpaceWays, co-founder David Fuchs explains the reasoning behind their project: “London is not only one of the biggest cities in Europe, but also one of the most expensive places per square meter in the world. With a population density of 13,690 people per square mile, space has become a valuable commodity. Given that the UK storage industry has been consistently growing, with over £385m traded last year, we believe there is huge growth potential for SpaceWays and the service we offer. Via our on-demand storage service people can free up valuable space in their homes without the inconvenience of bringing stuff to a remote storage location.”

How it works

SpaceWays provides a simple on-demand storage solution that no longer requires customers to haul stuff back and forth to a self-storage facility. Customers simply go to www.spaceways.co.uk and indicate how many storage boxes they need or which bulky items they want to store, and SpaceWays’ experienced drivers will deliver heavy-duty containers to their doorstep. When customers have finished packing, the boxes are collected and stored in SpaceWays’ secure CCTV-monitored facility just outside London. One box is £6 per month, with a three months minimum contract. The redelivery of the customer’s boxes costs £19, regardless of the number of boxes. There are no hidden fees or complicated contracts.

Who is SpaceWays for?

SpaceWays can be used by students, wanting to store their belongings while on exchange abroad,  young professionals struggling to find a place for their winter clothes, for families unwilling to part with their childrens’ old toys and clothes. And it is for businesses looking for a convenient solution to archive their files. Spaceways creates new ways into space for everyone.
